Goodtime Jesus

Jesus got up one day a little later than usual. He had been dream-
ing so deep there was nothing left in his head. What was it?
A nightmare, dead bodies walking all around him, eyes rolled
back, skin falling off. But he wasn't afraid of that. It was a beau-
tiful day. How 'bout some coffee? Don't mind if I do. Take a little
ride on my donkey, I love that donkey. Hell, I love everybody.

The Good Wife is only pretending to be a show about lawyers. It's actually a show about sneaky political maneuvering. Okay, it's sometimes about bleeding-heart lawyers, whatever, but most times it's about power struggles and how to play the public and how good people sometimes lose. In a different show, these people would be antagonists. In this show, it's not that clear-cut. "Being right is the last refuge of the loser," said Will. Also, look at this clip of Lana trying to seduce Kalinda as Kalinda tries to get information from her.

What is the deal with the increased frequency of geological disaster in recent years? What causes that? I'm looking at this list of killer quakes in the past century, and while I am irritated that last October's Indonesia double whammy has been left out, the list still shows a worrying trend. Why is our planet going tectonically insane? What the hell is going on?

Hang in there, Japan.

2A) TSUNAMI. At least 311 people dead, 400 still missing. 20 villages leveled and approx 20,000 people displaced, because nature loves to kick Sumatra in the teeth.

This all happened in under 24 hours. I BELIEVE THE CORRECT PHRASE IS "WHAT THE EVERLOVING FUCK." I called my parents asking if our peeps in Yogyakarta (by Merapi) are okay - they're okay! - so yaaay. Also I guess Jakarta flooded the other day? As did West Papua. EVERY TIME I TURN AROUND, INDONESIA, YOU ALWAYS BE BLOWIN UP IN MY FACE.

PHILIPPINES, YOU ARE NOT OFF THE HOOK EITHER. I SEE YOU WITH YOUR SUPERTYPHOON OF 110 MPH WINDS. There were much fewer casualties with the supertyphoon because for the most part, people were on top of their shit with the warning systems, early detection, and evacuations. Food security's gonna go down the shitter a bit because the northern Philippines is the country's rice basket (the stairway to heaven in Banaue, natch), and that's the general area where Juan/Megi stormed through. The Merapi evacuations, eh, could've been better.

BUT LOOK AT YOUR LIFE, INDONESIA'S TSUNAMI WARNING SYSTEM! LOOK AT YOUR CHOICES!:
Indonesia's [tsunami early warning system], completed in 2008 with German aid, has since fallen into such disrepair that it effectively stopped working about a month ago, according to the head of the Meteorology and Geophysic Agency.

The system, which uses buoys to electronically detect sudden changes in water level, worked when it was completed, but by 2009 routine tests of it were showing problems, said the agency chief, who uses the single name Fauzi. By last month, he said, the entire system was broken because of inexperienced operators.

"We do not have the expertise to monitor the buoys to function as intended," he said.

As a result, he said, not a single siren sounded after Monday's quake. [source]
SO THAT HAPPENED. OR DIDN'T.

Surfaid International will take your donations to tsunami relief in Australian dollars. You can also call 1-800-257-957.

Do you guys know of other ways to help out? Other sites to donate to? Surfaid International is the only website I've found that has a specific focus on the Indonesian double whammy. Other websites just have like general donations to the organization. Like, there are some of those here, I guess...

1. Is 2010 like the year of the earthquake? There was another one in western China's Qinghai province this morning, seven on the richter and so far at least 600 dead. The Huffington Post has links to how you can help. Fandom, are we gonna have ourselves a help_china?

2. How about the AU where Cas and Anna are hunters together, and the Winchesters are angels. Uriel is the Bobby. 'Verse-building rambling. ) I dunno, anyone wanna ramble it out with me in comments? Everyone should have a hunter AU. Mulder and Scully should be hunters. Gaga and Beyonce should be hunters. Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse should be hunters.

3. Meme time! Similar to the concept of [livejournal.com profile] firstlines1000, give me the first line and I'll reply with it as the first line of a ficlet/drabble thingie. Fandoms: Supernatural, Supernatural RPF, Fight Club, The Office, Parks & Recreation, classic Disney/WB cartoons, X-Files, Boondock Saints, Leverage, random anthropomorphism.

+ Do you guys like food? Sure you do! Get food, help Haiti. You don't hate headers or icons either, right? Of course you don't! Get graphics, help Haiti. HOW ABOUT MISCELLANEOUS STUFF, DO YOU GUYS LIKE MISCELLANEOUS STUFF? Get tarot readings/nail polish/hand-knit tribbles/Swarovski earrings(?!!), help Haiti.

Aaaaand for those of you who like Merlin. For those of you who want to donate traditionally. For those of you (in the USA) who are down with the texting: Text "HAITI" to 90999. $10 will be donated to the Red Cross. It'll get added to your next cell phone bill.

+ My fannish impulses re: Supernatural has thus far tended towards fusions and crossovers. Dean!Arthur, Sam!Morgana, John!Uther, and Castiel!Merlin? Or maybe the Winchesters and MacManus brothers team up and road trip it across the country fighting evil and crime, depending on which family you're in.

+ Same thing re: Psych. 'Cos maybe I just want Gus to be like "OMG MY PARTNER" and Watson is like "I KNOW." And when Shawn and Holmes barge in being like, "Trusty companion, we have a case!", Gus and Watson have left, leaving only a note that says "HAVE GONE ON HOLIDAY TO SEASIDE, DND KTHXBAI you self-centered pricks." And Shawn and Holmes make shifty-eyes at each other but SOMEONE has to solve this case, 'cos god knows Lestraud and Lassie could be all day.

+ And then maybe Mulder barges in yelling "THE CONSORTIUM IS BEHIND THIS" because why not.

+ "It's not that he's crazy," Scully muses, playing with the umbrella in her pina colada. Gus nods wisely and says, "I know what you mean." Also HUH, Watson and Scully are doctors, and Gus was in pharmaceuticals, so like. Is EVERYTHING based on Sherlock Holmes?

+ Art rec! Merlin crossover -- I would tell you which other fandom, but it would ruin the surprise.

+ Hey, remember the street food AU I was pitching a couple of posts ago, with the black market bureaucracy and insular politics? VINDICATED: The Street Vendors' Food Fight, now with additional trade gentrification. “These bakeries should focus on making better cupcakes, and not on stamping out the competition,” said Mr. Ekster, who, like many vendors, loudly proclaims his belief in free-market food fights. IDK, if hiatuses were a class, I would get a big fat F. But there are more important things! For example: porn. Specifically: porn in Australia! And the future lack thereof?! Here's what [livejournal.com profile] ineptshieldmaid has to say about it:

Minister Stephen Conroy has announced that the Australian Federal Government will be censoring our internet access, with legislation to be tabled in Parliament next year. As an Australian consumer and producer of adult content, I reject government censorship. Australian fans reject censorship. Fandom at large rejects censorship (I hope). Thus: a porn-in! A celebration of all the terrible adult content from which Minister Conroy would like to save us.
This porn-in will be taking place at both Ineptshieldmaid's dreamwidth and her livejournal.

IT'S A MOTHERFUCKING PORN-OFF IN.

In other news, the 3-sentence ficathon has become my favorite LJ hangout. It's perfect for my current attention span, and I'm writing in fandoms I would never write in other otherwise. So! Three-sentence fics under the cut! Some (many) of these fandoms have been crossed over with each other.

epistemology, English grammar, Harry Potter, Jonny Quest, Mary Poppins, Macdonald Hall, The Matrix, Merlin, Narnia, science, Shakespeare, & Wall*E )

I'm usually not one to be linking to College Humor, but check out Dangerous Wands, a fake trailer based on Dangerous Minds but set in the Wizarding World with Hermione Granger as Michelle Pfeiffer. ("DO I LOOK LIKE PRO-QUIDDITCH MATERIAL TO YOU?") It's utter crack basically, but UMMM now I kind of want to read the fic? It's so cracked out it came back the other way potentially compelling! What is it like for a socioeconomically disadvantaged wizard kid kicking around at the bottom of the system?! I mean, we've all seen how inept the Ministry of Magic is.

To conclude, 2 Merlinish things:
1) a ficlet I wrote for Memetime with Mordred & Morgana
2) the merlin/morgana drabble!au spam fest!

We want to speak our histories without having to worry about how people will use them against us: to deny the reality of our identities, to deny us medical treatments, to deny us our humanity. We want to own our histories. We want to own us again. ... Written pieces - whether in the form of essays, prose fiction or poetry - are preferred, but we will also consider visual pieces for inclusion."

+ 811 words of Yuletide. At least this is going more smoothly than my Solstice was. And I should really stop looking over my Solstice fic because it makes me go "OMG I SHOULD HAVE CHANGED/REWRITTEN THIS THING" and it's kind of stressing me out.

2. you are here: the journal of creative geography is accepting submissions! "Geographical imagination is a specific term, but has diverse meanings within geography and related fields. The concept has been used to describe the similarities and differences of individual or collective perceptions of space and place. We encourage submissions that engage this concept along with its limits and possibilities. Submissions should consider the utopian, fantastical, cultural, political, aesthetic, visionary, or other dimensions of this concept. We ask you to invent, define, unravel, or creatively explore imaginary spaces and spatial imaginaries." Submission deadline: January 10, 2010.

3. I saw this on 'Robot Chicken' last night and it totally cracked my shit up: Six Mix-a-lot comes to Camelot to educate some people about optimal table shapes.

4. omg Yuletide sign-ups! Can any of you be enticed to write fic for Jonny Quest, Captain Planet, The Johnny Maxwell Trilogy, or classic Disney cartoons? I hope so! (Think it's okay that I picked Jonny Quest instead of JQTRA? 'Cos I mean the character list still has Jessie on it...)

5. I'm still working on the writing prompts from the stories and identity post, so those are coming soon-ish. I also have to spruce up the knightfic I wrote for the Fleet party two parties ago. In the meantime, in honor of the World Series, here is Unnecessary 'Merlin' AU #748392: Arthur Pendragon is the starting pitcher for the Camelot Knights. Their long-term rivals are the Albion Wizards. Perhaps the World Series are on the horizon? They have a Round Stadium! I'm actually not sure what else it would involve outside of baseball signals and superstition, Knights Nation, and Arthur brooding prettily on the pitcher's mound. It... it could happen?

Did I have more to say than this? Possibly. But too bad!

Signal boost #1: Genderfail from Seventeen magazine. Well, more genderfail than usual. From the 'Letter campaign to Seventeen Magazine- WRITE NOW facebook group': "The November issue of Seventeen Magazine featured a story entitled "True Life Drama: My BOYFRIEND turned out to be a girl!" Rather than use this opportunity to educate readers about transgender issues, it never once even uses any terminology (well, unless you consider the slur "he-she" -_- ) but instead furthers the common transphobic assumption that someone who's gender does not match their sex assigned at birth is a deceptive liar and even compares them (at the bottom) to perverts, drug addicts, and older dad's trying to get someone young w/o disclosing their parental/age status.

Signal boost #2: If you are by Sacramento, won't you adopt some cats this Sunday? Bonus: these are tax-deductible cats!

I don't know why but someone made in-character Twitter accounts for Jonny Quest and Jessie Bannon, and I'm, uh, amused. Also, having just started Season 2 of JQ:TRA, prattlings of vague spoilers maybe ) Also I thiiiiiiiink I'm going to volunteer to write 'Ocean Girl' fic. I wish they'd stop vague spoiler sort of! )

I'm scrapping my Solstice idea again because it has once more turned into something I want to write instead of what the recipient wants to read. I am terrible, terrible at fluff.
