Like geese and ducks, they go south for the winter -- an Anatidaean family bearing their own ruffled feathers. The crisp air and stark colors of New England autumn have won Angel's heart, but the others are right: it's time to go. She clicks through her photos as Colin drives them across state lines. (Bradley has gone on driving sabbatical after Vermont, and everyone quite supports him in this decision.)

Something strange is afoot on the I-95.
"That's the fourth one we've passed," Katie murmurs. "What do you suppose it is?"
The billboards have everyone rather flummoxed. The messages range from the culturally questionable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:South_of_the_Border_sign_26_-_Sommtheeng_Deeferent.JPG) to the compellingly hopeful (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:South_of_the_Border_sign_25_-_Everything_old_is_new_again.JPG) to whatever the hell this is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:South_of_the_Border_sign_10_-_You_never_sausage_a_place.JPG). Who is this Pedro? What does he want from them? Do they want anything from him?
"iPhone it, Katie," says Angel, so Katie does, and this (http://www.pedroland.com/) is what comes up.
The three of them go "hmmm" at it dubiously, except for Colin, who keeps his eyes on the road and asks, "What? What is it? What's South of the Border?"
Bradley reads the introduction on the website out loud, the phonetics filtering through his rounded English, and Colin has to interrupt and say, "What are you doing?"
Bradley says, "No, I'm serious, look at this."
"He's quite serious," Katie adds.
So Colin looks. "Hmm," he comments.
"So," Angel says later, when they -- for some inexplicable unspoken reason -- pull into the parking lot for South of the Border. "Do you want to go to the Sombrero Tower or Pedroland Park, first?"
A collection of photos: 1) Angel, Katie, and Bradley at the Golf of Mexico. Katie (arms crossed) and Angel (her golf club over one shoulder) giving Bradley skeptical looks where he's crouching on the ground and trying to gauge geometrical angles with his club for his next shot. 2) Bradley and Angel pretending to be terrified of the Giant Gorilla statue. 3) the "El Drug Store" shop sign. 4) Colin and Bradley wearing sombreros in front of the gift shop. Bradley is grinning. Colin is not.
A video: 1) Bradley wearing a sombrero yelling awooga from atop the Sombrero Tower.
disclaimer!: author's views does not reflect that of south of the border's.
