a few episodes into the third season
I have general musings on Avatar, but first: hey guys, where are the episode tags to "The Beach" where there are sexy seaside sexings between the fire brats? I know they exist!
HAHAHA ZUKO AND EVERYTHING HE SAYS. omg he is such a weenie! I bet he loves Dashboard Confessional and over-relates to 'Garden State'. Prime example of how this show is a mix of badassery and corny-ness. Azula and Mai just emasculate him all the time, and he takes it 'cos he doesn't think with his brain, he thinks with his ego, and it's pretty easy cutting down someone who thinks with his ego. ALSO, since I am watching the Ember Island episode right now, that scene where he gives Mai the shell? omg. Zuko is ridic!
While we're talking about The Beach, how hilarious was Azula during this episode? <3
But back to Zuko, uhhhh. I didn't understand how he went from weenie to UBERWEENIE TO RULE ALL WEENIES during the arc where Iroh got a new teahouse. Was that from his spiritual sickness or something, because of how his actions violated his inner core? Christ. (He is angry at HIMSELF. Because he is CONFuUUuuuuUUSED.)
I am quite won over by Ty Lee, Iroh, and Sokka, though! Ty Lee's girlcrush on Azula? <333est EVER. It's also pretty impressive how Sokka keeps up with everyone even though he is, like me, a non-bender. He complains a lot but he doesn't let things keep him down. It's Ty Lee and Iroh (DRAGON OF THE WEST) I'd want to hang out with though. Sokka would probably grate on my nerves after a while, but I would admire him from afar.
OH AND MOMO. Love Momo.
Jet is for real dead, right? 'Cos when characters die off-screen, I'm never sure they actually do, especially in this age of Heroes and Lost, but I guess this is a kids show, so an off-screen death makes sense, I guess. WHICH IS WHY IT BLOWS. I adored Jet and his little gang. I was thrilled that they came back! I liked Smellerbee and Longshot (<3 LONGSHOT A WHOLE LOT) even more as the Ba Sing Se arc developed! And then! Jet died. Fuck that shit. I want a spin-off about Jet and his gang being awesome forever! JET, WE HARDLY KNEW YE.
The CRAZY ANIMALS. I want a turtleduck, holy shit. The whole self-aware conversation about bears in Ba Sing Se? Hee! I bet the writers just draw from a hat. Like, one writer unrolls his slip paper and it says TURTLE, and the second writer's slip of paper says DUCK, and then they have to work with it 'cos, if they fail, they have to come to work in tutus for a week, like they agreed.
Besides the animals, I am most impressed with the bending technology. Like, how the world puts them to military and transportation use. The earth trains! The swamp gondola things! The lock that can only be opened by airbenders! Elaborate elemental gates! Those rock hand things! It is a delight watching how this world works things out.
Do you think Toph and Mai would get along under different circumstances? They might, in that they can both shit on everything together.
I also want to write something about how awesome things happen on beaches, how it pushes you. I dunno what it is, maybe the proximity to so much vastness. Is it humbling or uplifting? Is it rarefied or concentrated? It maybe pushes you closer to being vulnerable, or at least to being honest. And then there's the in-between feeling you get during vacation, when you are neither here nor there. Things are kind of amorphous then and anything can happen. Add youth to it all, with its abandon and instability, and tendency to think in absolutes and habit of relating to negative space. The seaside is the perfect place for transition.
That being said, if anyone also wants to point me in the direction of fic about any of the following, my gratitude and glee would be all up in your grill!

-- any combination of the fire nation foursome, especially Azula/Ty Lee
-- Sokka
-- Azula&Zuko (or even... Azula/Zuko?) mind games and competitiveness

As you may have gathered, I've only watched up to 'The Beach' (which feels like fic but also like the Breakfast Club), so warn me for spoilers, even though I'm pretty damned spoilered by now, and I'll bookmark it for laterz. :D
