alas, the end of thanksgiving break

+ If the Freya episode managed to get anything across, it's only how desperate Merlin still is to find a place where he fits. Fitting into Camelot is okay, there's plenty of love there, from Arthur and Gaius and everyone, but Merlin still has to hide who he is. Fitting into destiny is okay, when it's not making his life terrible, but then destiny was a lie, so, whatever. If he had run away with Freya, not only would he not have to hide, but he'll also get to be her benevolent protector, which is a role he's gotten used to in Camelot. I'm not saying that this is excellent (and many of ya'll have already articulated why), it's just the role he recognizes. Of course he doesn't love her; he only loves what she represents: the opportunity to be himself and be strong for it, and the chance to be without secrets. As loyal as Merlin is to Gaius and as attached as he is to Arthur, he is apparently willing to throw it away for belonging and acceptance, and not having to choose between belonging and acceptance.

+ The Arthur/Gwen in "Sweet Dreams" is perfect. PERFECT. I <3 all their little interactions, and how in the end Gwen has HAD IT with this secret romance bullshit and just cuts it off like the sensible girl she is. I mean, she cares for Arthur, and she probably won't stop caring for him, but it's not worth all this drama, especially if nothing will ever come of it. Yanno I mean? I'm with you, girl.

+ Soooo Vivian is forever TRAPPED in a lovestruck stupor because she has no true love to kiss her better?! I think someone needs to write a fairy tale about Vivian and her curse, and how it is overcome. No one said it has to be romantic love, right? Can't her best friend kiss her better with true platonic love? How do you deal with being magically in love with someone everyday? MY THEORY IS that if no one kisses her better, she'll probably moon around, but then learn to live with it, this absence in her heart. Maybe she'll learn to not be incapacitated by it, but she will never be rid of it. Like... like regular love?

+ The Merlin Fic Battle is under way, and someone already wrote a ficlet for one of my prompts: Uther Pendragon & Lucius Malfoy, my son is better than your son. \o/

+ Multifandom 3-sentence fic-a-thon meme!

+ The Year of Living Dangerously - is it an interesting movie? Have you guys seen it? Would I love to hate it? Hate to love it? It's set in 1960s Indonesia before the communist purges (filmed in the Philippines), but it is also about journalist Mel Gibson and military attache assistant Sigourney Weaver, like, falling in love and sticking to their principles or something. Also, we got some yellowface going on. Always a plus, that.

+ Write postcards to Angel and Katie! Say It With Flowers: International Postcard Project

+ Oh yeah, I do have a commentary for The Ink Still Drying typed up. I should get that up at some point. Other things I'm excited about: having my Merlin episodes 2x03 and 2x08 on hard drive, having Prince Caspian on DVD.

Exactly, dude, between Arthur and Lancelot she's had ENOUGH of nice words with no follow through, especially since every time SHE puts herself out there she gets burned. It breaks my heart how accepting she is of the things she can never have for herself. But until he decides to do something about whatever he's feeling, there's no point entertaining him and she is practical to the last. So crazy about this character, idek.

And WORD on Merls in 2x09. Underneath the hasty romance was a LOT of meaty character stuff, and the natural outcome of his increased feelings of isolation and being stifled all season.

Thanks for the postcard!pimp! ♥

I think the Freya would have bothered me less if I could believe the writers were making the beginnings of it creepy on purpose. Both those kinds seem sort of young and desperate -- but like I said, MEDIEVAL WEREWOLF I CANNOT NOT LIKE HER.

Done already. (http://community.livejournal.com/miafic/16941.html) And in regards to the platonic thing? MAN. I stupidly sort of hoped that seeing her father in danger would have broken the curse, but with this "TRUE LOVE" shit they're running (although that kiss, GOD DAMN) they're not going to pay attention to friendship type love -- obviously that's being ignored this season in favor of hormones. DON'T GET ME STARTED.

How much did I love Gwen telling Arthur she couldn't handle this sneaking around shit and she was so tired of the DRAMA from boys. I love that. This is why Gwen is made of awesome. It broke my heart, because I wanted to see them making out in every corner, but I totally understood it and was so happy she was logical.

NOW IF SHE CAN JUST RIP THE BOTTLE FROM MORGANA'S HAND AND TALK TO HER AND GET HER IN AA, THAT WOULD MAKE ME REALLY HAPPY.

Having not seen any of S2 yet, but comfortably keeping up with spoilers -- srsly, the Lady of the Lake is called Freya?

:D

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
And not even THE lady of the lake, just A lady of the lake, or even SOME lady of the lake. Now comes in fridged flavor for convenient character development!

I loved Uther's little moment with Merlin in SD, "What happened to him?" like Merlin is the only person who should know. And it's true, Merlin is the only person who would know the best. But yeah, it goes to show Merlin's been around for long enough and proven himself trustworthy enough that Uther can have these little exasperated moments =)

Vivian was a much nicer person when she fell in love, and easier to get along with, so perhaps it's an improvement! Tho Arthur was prepared to let it go when he though his suit was cold, so perhaps Vivian will eventually stop pining after him and let it go too. And then go back to being her spoiled, brattish self again.

I want Morgana to realise Gwen loves Arthur! If ever there was a champion for their cause (and an opportunity to stand up against Uther) Morgana would be there. I mean, Gwen being all teary and flouncy when she found out about Arthur was a touch of a give-away anyway.

Ugh, yellowface-- for real? (Oh god, I just googled-- a white woman playing a Chinese-Australian man? Can that be true?)

While I have no desire to read The Memory Room, I do hear people say Year of Living Dangerously is good...? I'd be interested to know, too.

It almost kind of makes up for how rushed the Arthur/Gwen or 2x02 and 2x01 was? Or something? And then they pull it back, and now there's all this lovely repressed stuff, which is way more compelling.

I guess, I just can't see how the presentation of this crazy Merlin/Freya love could be anything BUT creepy. It's cute and sweet sometimes, I guess, but the overtones are totally just a sublimation of his loneliness.

LOL I like this drunk Morgana theory. It explains a lot.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that was a source of unexpected glee that Uther acted like Merlin was Arthur's keeper. Which, well, Merlin is.

I mean, I GUESS, but she's also brainwashed and not Vivian at all. She's nice the way a Stepford wife is nice, and where's the meaning in that? I kind of want to write a fic where Vivian (and her staff) deals with this crazy love curse, and she eventually has to learn to live with it.

A few people have subscribed to a drunk!Morgana theory, which actually explains much of her behavior.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it is true.

I've never heard of The Memory Room so I've just googled it. International spies, eh?

[identity profile] moment-of-sen.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think she was brainwashed as such, she was still herself, just gaga in love which coloured the world all rosy and consumed her attention. I'm sure given time to move beyond it, she would come back to herself, if always in love with a man she can never have, and probably knowing she can't have him would put her a bit less giddy about it. It'd probably work out better for her father, because she won't look twice at any other man and he can keep her close, all safe and secure.

I have not heard this lush!Morgana theory! Drowning her sorrows, is she?

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the difference between magic love and regular love then? Or maybe that's the point, that love is its own magic and cannot be sustained with magic as such? That eventually it will have to fade?

Yeah, she's been having a lot of troubles with the creepy nightmares, maybe the alcohol takes the edge off or something.

[identity profile] animus-wyrmis.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Freya/Merlin broke my heart. :(

And also YES to Gwen telling Arthur to STOP PLAYING AROUND. Gwen, love, maybe you need to find someone who isn't going to totally FAIL when you need him most.

AGH VIVIAN. Actually it really bugged me that Arthur finished that fight. I thought *for sure* that Vivian was going to jump over the wall and be like "No I love him! Don't do this!" But no, of course not, that would require she think or something. I hope she gets over her love for Arthur, though. Hm. There should be fic, you're right.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-12-05 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what about familial true love or platonic true love, I don't know. Honestly, I had no idea how they were going to resolve Vivian's end of the curse but never did I think they were going to just leave it UNRESOLVED. Man. POOR GIRL.
