The first time Susan comes into Edmund's dreams I'm like, SO ANGRY at her, because I want to know what Jadis is going to say, and at the moment I can totally understand Ed's inability to let her go and can see so clearly the source of her power over him (which, like she says, comes from Ed himself). I love that everything Edmund hears about magic from here on in (especially Shativa's bit about the nature of story) he applies directly to her, but still can't understand the nature of his relationship with her. “Don’t talk to me of women’s hearts, boy. You do not even know your own.” That, right there, is like his whole problem summed up in a sentence; and how you convey that is absolutely amazing, with ending it where it is--with her power reinstated, again at Edmund's own hands--after Edmund gives his whole speech about some things needing to be done alone, and about this being his battle, and how he needs protection from her when all she's doing is trying to protect him. And in the end, he's wrong. By trying to be strong and fight his battle, he's exploiting his weakness, and at the center of all of that is magic. I'm horrified by the ending and at the same thrilled with it, and THAT MAKES ME A HAPPY READER, YES'M.
All in all, I did not mean to write a novel, but that is what it seems I did. I also can't wait to read the deleted scenes and commentary. I don't think I could love this fic more than I already do, but I just might after reading those.
