They do not, DO NOT, examine Sam's character. Sera Gamble says this is about the epic love story of Sam and Dean, but it's really about the epic love Dean has for Sam. It's like the show doesn't even try that hard to get inside Sam's head anymore. Never for development, only for exposition.
