afterimages [this side of the looking glass] . a narnia fanmix. peter & susan after the fall.

Instead, I will demonstrate my feelings through SONG.

I kept on coming across songs that would fit better on a Susan mix part two (augh Susaaaan). And there is maybe a Morgana mix in the making? Anyway, here are a handful of songs and corresponding microdrabbles about Peter and Susan, post-PC. Rated PG13 for implied incestuous sexings.

1. The Ditty Bops, "Growing Upside Down"

just as the summer melts winter's ice
temptations come to tempt you twice

It's like a picture climbing out of their heads to bend their bodies to its will. She'll wait for him to meet her gaze and recognize the moment with her. When he doesn't, she won't know how to feel.

2. Devendra Banhart, "Autumn's Child"

raise your head, autumn's child
you sweet young thing

There is relief and there is dread, and there is Susan with her eyes closed and her lips parted and her fingers curling in his hair.

3. Tori Amos, "Way Down"

gonna meet a great big star
gonna drive his great big car
gonna have it all here on the way down

"What time will you be back?" Peter asks.

"When the cock crows, Father," says Susan, rolling her eyes. She kisses his cheek and slips out the door.

4. Sufjan Stevens, "Holland"

in the summer heat, I might

As she buttons up her blouse, she asks, "What is it?"

He shrugs and looks away. "Nothing," he replies, and says something inconsequential about the weather as she reapplies her lipstick.

5. Fiona Apple, "Never is a Promise"

you'll never hear the message I give
you'll say it looks as though it looks I might give up this fight

They accuse each other of the same things: childishness, tendencies towards flights of fancy, forgetting what truly matters.

"The point is that we're here," she says.

He says, "We're here, but that is not the point."

And it begins all over again.

6. Ben Folds Five, "Selfless, Cold, & Composed"

you don't owe me to be so polite
you've done no wrong
get out of my sight

She gives him the same smile she uses on the people she wants to impress and the people who want to impress her, and he wonders, When did it come to this?

7. Telepopmusik, "Stop Running Away"

all we need is peace of mind

"You ought to come out with us, Peter," she says. "You love to dance."

He shakes his head. "I used to."

"Nonsense," she laughs, and he lets her take his hand and waltz him twice around the kitchen, the steps familiar and the song only in their heads.

8. Nickel Creek, "When In Rome"

grab a blanket, brother,
so we don’t catch cold from one another
I wonder if we’re stuck in Rome

At the funeral, she thinks, I should have known.

9. Joanna Newsom, "Bridges & Balloons"

oh my love, it was a funny little thing
to be the ones to have seen

She allows herself to remember from time to time: the weight of a crown on her head and the assurance of prophecy, the constancy of love. She allows herself a few regrets, because she is only human. Her dreams still tease her sometimes, but then she wakes and the morning is pouring in through her window, and she does what she must.

Thank you! Why is their tragedy my happy place? I had so many thoughts about this mix and I nearly went the way of the commentary a la my Susan mix instead of writing drabbles, like I wanna say stuff like how Fiona Apple's wordiness kinda screamed Susan at me (well, Susan before she snapped herself out of it and started rebuilding) and how it is just not a Narnia mix without Sufjan Stevens. And MORE, argh, but ANYWAY, I hope you enjoy the mix!

I don't know! All I know is there's something truly satisfying about dysfunction and angst in fiction. yesss.

yayyyy Sufjan Stevens, I like this dude a lot.

Sufjaaaaan <3. The last song that made me cry was a Sufjan song, "Casimir Pulaski Day". Granted I was a bit out of my head, but still.

Sufjan sings about Pevensies ALL THE TIME. As do Arcade Fire, 'cos omg:
Oh my God, a winter for a year
And I cleaned out the back of my wardrobe for a year
Jackets never turn into branches
Not while you're not here

Like, COME ON, right?!

Casimir Pulaski Day! CHICAGO IS SO COOL. oh yay.

dfslksf holy cow that is exactly Narnia! I want to find all these Narnia-referencing songs, for serious.

Oh yeah, you are in Chicago! You can actually get the references in "come on feel the illinoise"?

Here (http://www.zshare.net/audio/60655282717afd2c/) is that song above. AND. If you are into Swedish Christian metal, click here (http://www.narniaworld.com/bandmembers/default.asp). XD

It is possible that I could! looking at the lyrics I kind of do get the references - Columbian Exposition, hell yes! - though some of them are just name-dropping, and I dunno what Carl is referencing though it's on the tip of my brain, so to speak.

XD I have seen that website a long time ago. I really want to find their lyrics. oh christian metal.

OH AND ALSO. "Caspian Can Wait" by The Velvet Teen (http://www.box.net/shared/lg6fusu04o), and "Prince Caspian" by Phish (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3phEyp7QMY).

[identity profile] animus-wyrmis.livejournal.com 2009-05-29 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What, for serious? Those are actually the lyrics?

AHAHAHAHA OMG OMG OMG.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's so strange the number of songs that reference Narnia! I didn't realize how deep in the pop culture it is. Whenever I come across another one I am filled with such gleeeeee.

[identity profile] animus-wyrmis.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
...Dude, does she actually reference Cair Paravel in "Bridges and Balloons"? Sweet!

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
RIGHT?! I was wondering if including that song in the mix was sort of a copout, because I feel like soooo many Narnia fanmixes include "Bridges and Balloons" (or at least The Decemberists' mediocre cover of it) 'cos it's so obvious. Like how when I went browsing through [livejournal.com profile] merlin_fanmix, all the Arthur mixes have "You are a runner and I am my father's son" by Wolf Parade. But whatever, 'cos "Bridges and Balloons" is totally a beautiful song and I hearts it much.

I feel like if you have a song talking about Cair Paravel, you are totally entitled to put it in a Narnia fanmix. Also, you're right, it's just gorgeous.

I dunno, it feels like less of a copout if it explicitly references the source material?
