Knife practice sucks because of the way Dean stares if Ben gets so much as the tiniest scratch. If it's deep he insists on patching it up before Lisa sees, rubs the smear of blood between two fingers, and there's something cold in his eyes when he mutters, "We could have used you."

Ben doesn't understand, but he's proud of the way he doesn't so much as whimper when the dental floss snaps and he bleeds onto his Batman duvet.

Dean shows him how to get stains like that out, and who'd have thought laundry could be cool?
