I haven't read a lot of S4 Wincest (I entered fandom in S5), so I don't know what the trends are, but Sam's faith has always been something that intrigued me, even if canon doesn't touch on it often. I don't quite agree with Castiel either, but he's still pro-fate at this point in canon, so 'advice' like this would I think just further drive Sam to take matters into his own hands. Sam's going to work hard to deserve what he wants to have.
