Sorry for the lateness of my reply. I got intimidated by the length and kept putting it off so I can reply to it properly, so I'm gonna reply to it now before I become even more rude.
Interestingly I was watching Vampire Diaries, which came before SPN, yeah? And in one episode they were playing 'When the Levee Breaks' and I was like XDDDD. I wanna say the songs SPN chose in the aired pilot were less cheesy and not so pandering or lazy, but strictly speaking I don't know if this is true ahaha. It's just that I associate SPN with a certain type of music, so watching the unaired pilot with its dramatic strings and Jay-Z and Green Day just made me go lolwut.
I'm very strongly of the opinion that it isn't hunting Sam was running from. It never was. He loves hunting. What he hates is feeling like his life's not his own. I agree with this a lot. I like the bit of fanon where Sam went on a couple of hunts by himself in Stanford because he couldn't help himself, he couldn't just sit by and let that werewolf eat people when he knew he could do something about it.
