When Frodo was wee...

So, I watched The Good Son on Star Movies and was reminded again just how much I crazylove that movie. I LOVE IT, YOU HEAR?! The two kids' performances just completely blow me away. BLOW ME!

...AWAY!

It came out in 1993 and the summary is like, "When his mother dies, Mark Evans (Frodo Baggins) is sent to live with his aunt and uncle for a while, where he meets his kuhraaaayzay cousin Henry (Macaulay Culkin), who does kuhraaaayzay shit and freaks Frodo out."

Many reviews don't like it. They were like, "OMG! But they're kids! My morals can't take it!" Which is understandable. My biggest problem, though, is probably that the little sister was annoying and Henry's existentialist monologue sounded too... uh, existentialist? for a ten-year-old or however old he was?. Anyway, the bad reviews make me sad. So I will stop reading them. Instead, I will express my love in bullet point form:

-Whee!
-I'm curious about this The Bad Seed movie the reviews keep harping on about.
-Culkin was good in this one. So what the hell was Party Monster? Maybe they beat him up with the "can't act" stick before every scene or something.
-It kind of reminds of a pint-sized Murder By Numbers, which brings me to my next point.
-If the kids in the movie were older, we'd be slashing them like mad.

Heh.. My love for this movie is huge. It came out soon after Huckleberry Finn established my bad-lust for Elijah Wood (hey, I was 16 at the time... *rolls eyes*), and so I went to go see it in theatres.

I remember wondering WHY it was rated "R" when the only 'bad' word was 'fuck'...once. But now I realize it was an 'OMG KIDS ARE KILLING KIDS!' rating.

The Bad Seed is an old movie about an unrepentant child murderer (girl) who whacks people with her tap dancing shoes (!!!) Very creepy in its day, yes.

I think this was my favorite McCauley Culkin movie ever. He was so misused, methinks.

...Shirley Temple biopic?

Heh. Anyway, did you like The Bad Seed?

You're right about the 'fuck' thing. One review said the kids were "cussing like sailors" and I said, "Eh?"

So what the hell was Party Monster?

I keep asking myself that very thing, over and over, when I remember that movie and shudder a little.

Bad acting or good, Macauley Culkin is never, ever, ever allowed to wear Little Lord Fauntleroy shorts for the rest of his natural life.

On a total sidenote: the Good Son.

Dude. I adore The Good Son. I have this AU in my head where Henry doesn't die, but insead gets sent away to a counselling center and comes back when he's, like, fifteen. And everyone's like, "Oh, we trust him again, I guess" but Mark is all freaked out and paranoid because Henry is kind of creepy, and then they have hot cousinsex, and Henry is still kind of a sociopath. Big Gay Pre-Teen Murderer, Henry is.

As for Macaulay's acting...well, he did Party Monster after a five- or six-year hiatus, so he was maybe a little rusty. But I think he was actually supposed to be acting like that, a little bit fake. I thought it was the funniest shit ever, and when he actually had to do emotional scenes, he could totally play them. He acts more with his face and his body than he does with his voice. Also, you should see Saved! Totally convinced me that he's still an actor.

Whoa!

OMG!!!
I had never even heard about this movie before but I followed the breadcrumbs - like the ever-curious movie/slash whore that I am - and watched the trailer.
Whooooooaaaa!!!!!
The trailer alone chilled my blood.
Will definitely keep an eye out for it in the video store.

Macaulay - your finest hour and hardly anyone even knows about it; they think you're just that screaming kid from 'Home Alone'.
*sigh*

I was freaked out by tiny!Elijah though - I realised I've never ever seen pics of him from when he was little like that and it was just...weird. Tiny!Elijah but with all the facial expressions and intonation and movements of LotR!Elijah. Arg!

-If the kids in the movie were older, we'd be slashing them like mad.
Their youth, I fear, is not an obstacle to me some...
It's just too obvious!

re: party monster

that movie freaked me the fuck out. not in a "MACAULAY CAN'T ACT OMG" way (but that too) but in a "ahh i can't sleep" way. i'm not sure why. it wasn't a creepy movie.. it just.. had a sort of eery feeling to it.

Was it the worrying amount of glitter present?

[identity profile] lux--aeterna.livejournal.com 2004-06-17 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
no it was the like.. giant fucking rat confessing to seth green.

I support kid actors who don't suck.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2004-06-17 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a slew of untalented hack kids on Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel, so it was utterly refreshing to see Wee Wood and Wee Culkin give AMAZING performances. Last time I saw a kid that good was Christian Bale in 'Empire of the Sun'.

Tiny!Elijah but with all the facial expressions and intonation and movements of LotR!Elijah.
omg you're right. O_O Wow.

Now that it's mentioned, I definitely remember reading Good Son fic somewhere... yes, it did have hints of incest...

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2004-06-17 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I support your AU endings. *thumbs-up, manic grin*

Yes, I have heard of this Saved!... In fact I think I heard it on your journal. I'll keep an eye out for it. And you're right about the not acting with the voice thing, I say. Mac had one way he'd say sentences on Party Monster and he said every line the same way omg.

They were CGI then and they are CGI now.
AHAHA! And you're right: he *is* Frodo. Christ, Lij, sorry, you're stuck with it for life, hobbitboy.

Lijah goes all Casey.
XD. You work that cross-fandom referencing. Work it.

This [livejournal.com profile] oollah has a point: Lij was born to be a damsel in distress. Natch.

Which one were the Fauntleroy shorts?

[identity profile] lux--aeterna.livejournal.com 2004-06-17 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh, lupin chocolate!

thanks love.
