And what the hell is this? Who made this bloody mess? And someone always answers like a martyr Is it something you should know, did you never do your best Would you be saved if you were brave and just tried harder THIS part is def Susan. The martyr line especially strikes a chord, 'cos Susan doesn't let anyone make a martyr out of her. She tries her best and tries to be brave, but her siblings mistake her bravery and effort for, you know. Forgetting Narnia.
ZOMG and Sheriff Peter is like, "Think you know the lay of the land, city slicker?" And Caspian gets all indignant, 'cos he was raised in the comfortable knowledge that he is going to (and thus is capable of) taking care of business here. But Peter knows these types, strolling into town all fancy and high-falutin'. Edmund spits tobacco juice on the ground and turns to his brother, and says, "I give him three weeks, tops." Without taking his eyes off Caspian, Peter says, "Two." "Two and a half." "How dare you!" Caspian sputters. The Pevensie brothers mount their horses. The sun glitters off of Peter's sheriff badge. Peter adds, "And stay away from my sister." And the sheriff and the deputy gallop off into the sunset.
EXPAT!EDMUND IS MADE OF WIN omg totally He goes to places that seem like other worlds: places that are awash in color, places that are so hot and clammy he thinks he sweats nonstop, places that are so noisy his ears ring, places that are so quiet that it's easy pretend he is the only one alive. The desert reminds him of Calormen, and the Pacific reminds him of the eastern sea. Edmund becomes the ultimate third-culture kid. None of these places are Narnia, and sometimes this is a relief, especially when he forgets the shape of the absence in his heart: is it Narnia? Is it his siblings? Is it being king? Once, he went on safari in Africa and saw a pride of lions. His companions oohhed and ahhed but Edmund was silent, and he just watched the animals, and felt the loneliest he'd been in years. He moves often. He is not afraid of change.
AND OF COURSE he goes to the South Seas, to find that portal the Telmarine ancestors used to get into Narnia.
