contains multitudes

I'm thinking of making Dreamwidth my fic repository. I'll post fic there, though I'll still link to it from here, but this LJ is going to be a more personal LJ. I've avoided posting anything that's not at least slightly fandom-related on lassiterfics, but I reckon it's time for a change. I've been contemplating making a fic masterlist also, since Remix Redux is apparently coming up. Maybe I'll put it up on Dreamwidth also. I was going to start making it tonight, but then I started going through my old fics and maybe started cringing.

With that preamble, a poll!

I'm not actually using my Dreamwidth account atm, I just wanted to make sure I claimed my username in case I ever do switch over there.

maybe i'd feel differently about it if i wrote fic, but i'm way too anal to leave anything out of masterlist. i always like reading authors' older stuff, even if the quality isn't great, just to see the ways in which their style has changed.

I'm damn impressed with how much I've improved in the years I've been writing fic, so I like to show that full development in my listing. *G* All of my old xfics are still up on display. And they still get me feedback, so I like to think karma's at work?

I'm mirroring (most) things on LJ and DW. (I'm just going through some really complicated cross-posting process, because apparently I hate technology like that, and also the incident where I deleted the fic scarred me for life.)

*dubious* All my CSI:NY fic is still up, but I try not to think about it very much; I never posted it anywhere besides my LJ. It's so out of date (first season! elaborate worldbuilding! extensive OCs! JOSSED LIKE WHOA) that I'm not sure anyone would actually be interested in it. So...the answer translates to, "I HAVE NO IDEa."

I haven't got an account yet, but I'm planning to once I figure out a way that doesn't make me nervous about sending money over the intertubes. (I don't know anyone well enough to ask for an invite code point blank, and in any case I don't mind supporting Dreamwidth.) If/when I get one, I'd probably crosspost my fanfic and original fic, maybe with a bit more organization and a masterlist and maybe the inclusion of my Breakfast Club fic (which is currently banished to FF.net).

I'm not using Dreamwidth for anything right now, I just wanted to claim my username in case fandom eventually migrates over there. For the moment, I'm very attached to LJ.

In response to your other question, I don't write a lot of fic, but I do have some really awful old Narnia ones still up on my journal. This is because at one point I took them down off of the (now obsolete) journal that I wrote them in, and then I started getting random stray comments from people who were looking for them, so I put them back up. Because you KNOW how annoying it is when you really just want to read some Peter/Susan and you follow a rec or a link and it's DEAD and then you kind of want to strangle the author a little bit for foiling you in your quest. YOU KNOW BECAUSE THIS HAS TOTALLY HAPPENED TO YOU, DON'T LIE. So don't do it to other people.

ATM Dreamwidth is my back-up account in case LJ folds or something. That may change when I get the time to actually read through all the terms and get to grips with the new account. If I wanted to use an account for fictional experiments I'd probably adopt a new LJ identity totally unrelated to fandom stuff.

Fic Masterlist: Gah, it's nice to reflect that as you keep writing you really do get better, but I think most people have fics that could be dropped off a masterlist. By that I don't mean in badfic terms of popularity - since some really good stuff doesn't generate loads of feedback - but those sort meh fics that didn't work for one reason or another and don't particularly mean anything to you. Perhaps you could do a masterlist of stuff you really want to keep upfront and a sort of appendix of 'other works' so that they're available but not clogging out stories you'd really like people to find and read. (Er, this is really a personal reaction. 9/10 of the stuff I've written is totally throwaway.)

I like that idea! I'll have the official masterlist, but then make a note that this not comprehensive and here is where you can find more if you're interested, and link to my LJ Memories, where all my fics are housed.

.....Do you mind telling me exactly what a DreamWidth is?

Hahah, despite not being entirely sure about what it is, I kind of want one. But apparently you need to pay to get one? Or you need an invite code? *is so confused*

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Dreamwidth is almost exactly like Livejournal, with differences in the structures of friending and interests. It's supposed to be more fandom-friendly, and I can totally see how that would work out. Yeah, you need to pay or get an invite code from someone to start an account. Even though there's nothing in it, here's mine (http://whynot.dreamwidth.org/) so you can see what it looks like.

I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to use my dreamwidth account for, but I'm leaning towards having it be my fic place and random other fandom stuff. That is if I ever actually write any. :P

As for stuff you no longer like, perhaps create a category of "old stuff" (or whatever), because even if you don't like it, someone else might. And at least by putting it in that category, you've somewhat acknowledged that it's not perhaps your best work.

I'll keep my DW up in case everybody really does move en masse, but barring that possibility, I'm too constrained by inertial laziness to consider setting up shop over there full-time.
