IN A LAND OF MYTH AND A TIME OF LEGEND
- Interesting camerawork! Fancier than last season.
- GRATUITOUS SHIRTLESS ARTHUR \o/
- OMG CREEPY DEADFACE. In accordance with the trailer, season 2 seems to be going for MOAR CREEPINESS. Awesome.
- Okay, when Merlin saved Gaius. Can Merlin actually slow down time, or is he actually just doing magic RILLY FAST and the slo-mo is just for the audience's benefit?
- "I knew there was treasure to be found beneath Camelot." This is HILARIOUS. OH UTHER. There has been much speculation on what our favorite Camelotians have been doing between S1 and S2, and apparently Uther has been SEARCHING FOR TREASURE. How long has this been going on?! I can imagine Morgana being like, "Uther. There is no treasure under Camelot." And Uther says, "YES THERE IS. JUST YOU WAIT."
Gaius says, "There are rumors and legends that do say such things but--"
"See?! Rumors and legends! I have gone after things for lesser reasons."
And okay, they can't argue with him there.
I just imagine an Uther obsessed with silly conspiracy theories. (Well, I guess he already kind of is.) Treasure under the castle! Arthur is all :-/ that his father is putting such manpower into something so silly. Arthur is no businessman but it seems to him that if you want to make more money, you don't go and invest your money on chasing urban legends. IS ALL HE'S SAYING. I feel like the writers are saying, "Look! Uther is ALSO greedy!" Okay, he's your villain, we get it.
- omg when Uther goes "...Idiot," at Merlin. Like son like father! <33
- MOAR GRATUITOUS SHIRTLESS ARTHUR
- Only Merlin is allowed in Arthur's chambers. Oh show, you do go on.
- Woah hey, the red jacket got an upgrade! Nice duds, Arthur.
- lol Cedric groping on Arthur, moving in on Merlin's man. Merlin is not pleased. I can't believe how susceptible Arthur is to getting his ass kissed, though. Fanon Arthur wouldn't be so dumb.
- OKAY. Tell me that when that HUGE FUCKING BOAR burst out of the bushes, I wasn't the only one having South Park flashbacks. Half man, half bear, half pig. IT IS MANBEARPIG. Okay, so it wasn't very man-looking. But that's a bearpig if I ever did see one. Thing was the size of a house!
- Merlin magically spearing the boar in the most unsubtle of ways. REMIND ME, MERLIN, why haven't you been outed for a sorcerer yet?
- Gaius has always been Uther's ally against sorcery! FASCINATING. "You, more than anyone, should not give in to these irrational fears." Gaius more than anyone?! Why?? What does this mean?! What has Gaius done?!? Uther trusts Gaius and Gaius loves Uther, but Gaius has been deceiving him for years. Gaius lies to people all the time, but his affection for the people that he lies to is genuine. He loves them even as he's manipulating them. He's manipulating them because he loves them?? Gaius, what is your issue?! Augh, I want fic about Gaius and his lies.
- "MUCK OUT YOUR HORSES." Oh man, I like this Cedric character. Also, he really is rather pretty. Makes me forget he plays British Dwight Schrute!
- The thing Cedric uses to drug Merlin is the same thing that Arthur used to drug the guards from that episode, I forget the name!
- LOL FACE FIRST INTO THE HORSE SHIT. Awesome.
- Clodpole is the new prat.
- SOMETIMES LOVE MEANS WIPING HORSE SHIT OFF EACH OTHER'S FACE
- "I'm not an idiot." <3 everything he does is for Arthurrrrrrr. I'm glad Merlin is pissed at Arthur. I'm glad he's articulating these feelings, and that he's sad and maybe a little resentful that, even after all he's done for Arthur, Arthur is still a huge jerk to him. In S1, Merlin just took Arthur's assholery in a stride, upholding this two-dimensional "I love Arthur no matter what!" sentiment, which can get real old real fast. In fic, the name-calling tends to amount to, "Aww, boys being boys! This is how they show their love, and they wouldn't have each other any other way!" But having someone be an asshole to you and make you clean their horseshit all the time can get real tiring, and I bet Merlin has moments of "I can't believe I'm destined to forever save this jerkwad who doesn't even appreciate me." It humanizes Merlin's loyalty to Arthur, and it makes me interested in their relationship in a way I haven't been recently.
- fatherly Gaius, aww! <3
- SHIRTLESS ARTHUR #3
- "Sound the warning bell" again! Like from my favoritest episode 8.
- HILARIOUSEST FIGHT EVER. EVER. Cedric vs. Merlin: the fight of people who don't know how to fight. What the hell is Merlin trying to do anyway? Knock Cedric out? Restrain him? Arthur's reaction is just perfect. All unimpressed and facepalming and "I can't believe this is happening, but on some level, I unfortunately really can." Arthur catching Merlin and putting an end to the fight is the XDest ever. STRATEGERY: it is why he is a knight.
- So then the gargoyles come to life and are causing chaos, what is Uther doing? Just sitting on his throne. Why? It's the middle of the night, you're not holding court. Your city is being attacked, you should be fighting! But no, you're just chilling on your throne. WELL I GUESS SOMEONE HAS TO. Oh Uther.
- RETURN OF THE KNIGHTS OF THE FAIL TABLE. omg. worst knights ever.
- "NO. MY PLEASURE." lol Arthur. Also, what an awkward thank you.
- Cedric gets a hair upgrade with his new soul! Hee.
- Gaius knew all along that Merlin visits the dragon!!! <33333
- YES YES, I love the dragon accusing Merlin of betraying his kind! Of betraying MAGIC. I would like more on this theme, I've always enjoyed it. He's a child of two worlds, and that puts him in such an interesting place in terms of loyalty. Using the powers of one world to protect the other. Using the powers of one world to destroy that one world!
- A promise to free the dragon! Eeeeee! I love Merlin's expression here, the wry "oh you are SUCH a bastard". He's very strong in this episode. I mean, he's always been, but he's more confident now, and more cynical.
- LET ME BREATHE ON YOU TO EMPOWER YOU. OMG LIKE ASLAN. Eeeee. But this dragon spell is still a total deus ex machina and is kind of TOTALLY LAZY. Unless - because he's got a little bit of dragon in him now - the whole 'loyalty to magic' conflict will intensify in the coming episodes.
- aaahhhh Cedric coming out of the smoke is so cool-looking. Cedric! <33 You may be my new minor character to be overinvested in.
- The ending REALLY REALLY SUCKED. Like, REALLY. Sucked huge hairy balls and it's still picking out pubes from between its teeth. Merlin's method of defeating Cornelius Cedric seems to be this:
1) Be possessed by Cornelius's soul.
2) ???
3) Profit!
What the fuck? I was so confused when that happened but saw there was only like five minutes left, because how are they going to resolve an evil possessed Merlin in five minutes? Answer: they DIDN'T. Is Merlin protected by the dragon's breath? Is he just supermagical now? How did he go from being possessed by Cornelius's soul (his eyes turned black and everything!) to putting it back in the jewel? The answer I'm tempted to pull is that Merlin is, in fact, STILL EVIL and is only pretending to not be possessed so Cornelius can continue bringing about the destruction of Camelot. That would be cool.
- FUCK, man, does every villain have to die?! Can't they just be thrown in a dungeon or something, so I can write fic about them in the future? Cedric is pretty cool. He's smart and ambitious. GAH. I kind of want to write a fic that's made of drabbles about the villains who have died. Nimueh, Edwin, and Cedric especially.
Hmm, not the best. Good Gaius bits, but not enough Morgana and Gwen.
A Katie&Angel interview, S2 speculations. The thing that Angel said about Gwen! About how Gwen has always been politically minded and has always been for the people. It's not just about the aristocracy! I... haven't really picked up on this in S1, but that is pretty great anyway. I WANT GWEN TO LEAD THE REVOLUTION.
How much do you love Angel and Katie fighting over who gets to be the warrior queen? And also Katie being like, "STFU ABOUT THE EVIL ALREADY"? I think very much.

NOW I AM JUST IMAGINING MORGANA AND ARTHUR READING OUT THEIR WHAT-I-DID-OVER-THE-SUMMER ESSAYS AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH SCHOOL YEAR. "This summer, my father decided to build Camelot's first luxury spa, which I was bullied into helping construct. Somehow Morgana got out of this."

"This summer, I looked fabulous and bullied Arthur and totally didn't make out with Gwen."

I feel like we need the kindergarden/elementary school AU now. WHERE UTHER IS THE TEACHER. AND GAIUS IS THE

Still not free."
"This summer I searched for buried treasure because my physician said I would have a better chance of finding that than the Temple of a Thousand Women, which I hear is in Orkney somewhere. I secretly dispatched manpower there to verify."

"See?! Rumors and legends! I have gone after things for lesser reasons."
And okay, they can't argue with him there.
I laughed a lotttt irl when I read this, and promptly sent it to one of my friends so she could laugh, too. UTHER WHY ARE YOU SO DERANGED.
Only Merlin is allowed in Arthur's chambers. Oh show, you do go on.
They really should've just called this episode "Pure Fanservice" and had done with it.
Merlin. D: D: D: Oh Arthur, why are you such a douche? But god Merlin and Cedric's girlfight made me laugh. I am wondering if this will make Arthur FINALLY decide to teach Merlin to at least not fight like a moron.
MERLIN MERLIN MERLIN. I love this freaking SHOW. But oh god, I agree about the Cornelius resolution- I kind of want a brief arc about Merlin being possessed! Cornelius would've made a good Big Bad. Sigh.
I hope we get more Morgana next week!
no subject
"Arthur, can't you do anything about this?" Morgana whispers as Uther unrolls another super secret treasure map that Geoffrey spent all night digging for in the library.
This episode was so fanservice, but I also agree with someone on my flist who said that it was pretty much 'Merlin 101' for new viewers.
I WOULD LOVE A POSSESSED!MERLIN ARC. It would have... made more sense than that ending.

I like crazy Uther, but I also want crazy Uther to be sympathetic. I want to understand why he's crazy, and they did this pretty well in S1, but this TREASURE HUNT THING is pretty out of this world, oh man.
no subject
I can almost see crazy!Uther being a continuation of almost losing Arthur in 1x13, particularly given how badly he freaked out when Arthur went back out to fighting the gargoyles. Sort of like how Arthur becoming such a jerk to Merlin could relate back to how Merlin spent Arthur's almost-death away from him, and Merlin becoming more about the Big Gay Destiny as a result of all of 1x13's madness. But it's not like the show is actually talking about how the finale is affecting anyone in season two, so I don't know if any of it is intentional or just in my had.

WHERE IS MY DARK!MERLIN FIC, FANDOM? STOP FAILING ME.
Agreed on so many points about Gaius, although I kind of miss Arthur's old jacket even though the new one is snazzy.
no subject
For serious, some fic about Merlin going over to the dark side would be great. I didn't really buy such stories last season, but after 2.01, HELL YES.

(I mean, to me the development of Merlin's magical prowess has always felt sort of disjointed and suited-to-whatever's-needed-for-the-episode, so handwaving is not exactly a new thing but still.)
I was glad for a non-magical villain for once.
The Katie/Angel interview is my favorite. *_____* What I figure Angel was referring to is how Gwen sometimes mentions the way all people deserve representation - like in the Lancelot episode where she was talking about how not-noble people should be able to serve as knights, and in Moment of Truth with the women getting to fight and then how Arthur shouldn't turn his nose up at the villagers' food, and sort of vaguely in the premiere about how glad she was that Merlin stood up to Arthur.
no subject
1.10 had a non-magical villain! That one was just brigands.
Hmm, ya okay I see what you are saying. Gwen <33
no subject
LOL yes, of course. *facepalm*
And I so want that episode tag. Merlin can be in there still, like inwardly screaming, because no one can tell what's happening. Until perhaps Gaius walks in on Merlin practicing something he could never know (or possibly catches him trying on a feather wrap). AND THE JIG IS UP. Then there can be a proper showdown, an HP-like internal struggle in which Merlin fights against the evil inside him, and focusing on Arthur and Gwen and Gaius and Morgana and Hunith is what brings him through, and there are flashbacks of various hugs and it's all very tearjerky.
...idk.
no subject
OH, AND AND. Morgana has dreams of doom again, really bad nightmares this time, worse than usual, and it's Gwen who puts two and two together. Something is DEFINITELY up with Merlin, if that's even Merlin.
She goes to Arthur with her thoughts, and he's like, "What do you MEAN I have to throw Merlin in the dungeons?"
"Or at least restrain him somehow. At least until we figure out what's going on. That's not Merlin."
"Just because he's actually competent now, doesn't--"
"Sire." And Gwen gives him a Look.
Oh man, but then how do they restrain this powerful sorcerer?? and imagine how horrified Merlin would be once he's outed as a magician but he still has no control over his body.
no subject
Gwen cottoning on first makes all kinds of sense, and YES, the Look, because that was mean, Arthur, but also, we both know the non-bumblyness is the FIRST SIGN.
There may not even be a way to restrain Merlin/Cornelius without first getting the soul back inside the
horcruxplastic heart, because holy crap how powerful must he be. But now Gaius is in a coma so this is quite a fix. AND POOR MERLIN.no subject
Could one knock Merlin/Cornelius out with some drug? I mean, Merlin's body would still be susceptible to that, eh? OR. To get Cornelius's soul back inside the heart, Morgana might have to step up, do some magic awesomeness at his ass. But maybe Cornelius/Merlin had detected the magic inside her already, previously.

The writers of this show. They are SUBTLE LIKE MY BATTLE-AXE.
Augh, I want fic about Gaius and his lies.
If you write it, I will read it!
Makes me forget he plays British Dwight Schrute!
Gareth Keenan > Dwight Schrute x1000000!
Arthur's reaction is just perfect. All unimpressed and facepalming and "I can't believe this is happening, but on some level, I unfortunately really can."
LOL, EXACTLY THIS.
In conclusion: NEEDZ M0AR MORGANA.

NEEDZ M0AR MORGANA.
FOR REAL. And doing something other than screaming in horror, please.

Ah, Merlin, business as usual then!

Arthur really needs to train his knights better, because they are all dead now. Again. I want a return of that one that restrained Uther, though, for he seemed interesting.
Ending: I'm totally up for Merlin, who just got spit on with some of the Great Dragon's secret knowledge + got possessed by the greatest sorcerer of his time = mega powerful, to slow down/strop time and RUTHLESSLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF UNCONSCIOUS ARTHUR RIGHT OVER THERE. Then, Merlin's on the inside going bonkers, and, like, snaps when Evil!Merlin goes to kiss Arthur (or, well, do considerably darker things) and vomits the soul back into the heart (that he had kept on himself?). A lot of things can happen in 2 seconds when one controls time, though I agree with your initial question of whether he slows it or just goes very fast. I always went for slowing, because of that first episode when he slows/freezes the water in Gaius's bucket. Perhaps he can do both? Or simply grew more powerful and can slow/freeze a lot more than single items at a time? Anyway, more EVIL!Merlin, please. And more Gwen and Morgana, definitively. Am counting on the next episode for these, cleavage or not.
no subject
I want a return of that one that restrained Uther, though, for he seemed interesting.
Yeah, that guy's performance was pretty riveting. I wonder if he'll get a name.
Yeah, how does Merlin get the heart? I thought it would be with Cedricnelius because he had it last. What, did he drop it on the tomb floor? And I don't think Merlin went to the tomb after he busted himself out, he went straight to busting gargoyles. After Merlin was possessed, he dropped lifelessly on the floor, and suddenly in the next seen he has... somehow gotten over it. Somehow! TIS BUT A SCRATCH.
Hmm, I like the idea of freezing single items at a time, that makes sense.
In this possession AU, it would be interesting if Cornelius ends up possessing more than one person to meet his ends. Like, jumping from Merlin to Morgana because he wants to see the future. Jumping from Morgana to Uther because he wants to make some destructive orders. I guess that leaves the question of what to do with the previously possessed though. Maybe threats will keep them quiet. Like if Merlin tries anything while unpossessed, Cornelius will make Arthur kill himself. I wonder if Cornelius can split his soul and inhabit two bodies at a time.
no subject
And I agree with you on Gaius! WHAT HAS HE BEEN HIDING. Is he just really good about lying, or is he actually more anti-magic than we know? i agree with you, there needs to be fic! What is his relationship with Uther, really? Why did he take Merlin in?
I assumed Uther needed money. I mean, the treasury can't still be full, right? Every episode they lose knights and wreck the castle. And it's not like they have the manpower to invade anyone, so maybe buried treasure is the best alternative.
no subject
I wonder, are we going to get anything similar with Gwen?
Morgana isn't a jerk to Gwen though. If there is going to be a rift between the girls, it's probably going to be from something that neither of them can control. Like Morgana being magical and future-seeing. Well, at least until she learns to control it. But until then, I can see how it would stress them both out to the point of a rifting.
Aww, I don't want him to be anti-magic, I want him to keep on being morally sketchy XD.
And it's not like they have the manpower to invade anyone, so maybe buried treasure is the best alternative.
This is so hilarious and sad. Uther is just going off the rails. And they're definitely not invading anyone with the set of knights they got!
no subject
Hmmm. I guess I sort of wonder, like, part of the problem is that Arthur doesn't see Merlin as an equal at all. Whereas with Gwen and Morgana, they're more like friends (and there don't seem to be any ladies in the castle? Arthur has knights to hang with but I think Morgana just has Gwen), so I wonder if there might come a point where one of them thinks the relationship is more equal than it is.
ME TOO. Morally sketchy Gaius is the best ever. I wonder how he convinced Uther, though--what did he have to do? (Also, it's hilarious how for most of the first season he was all "No! Magic will not help, we must use science!" and now it's like "Just don't get caught, Merlin.")
They can't help it--their knights have a life expectancy of like -10 minutes! Every episode is like "Son! Go defeat the undefeatable magical creature!" "Come on knights, let us go as my father demands!" "No, Arthur, I will save you with my secret magic!" But no one saves the knights, they get killed.
OH ALSO at the end of the episode where there's the previews? was that arthur about to kill his father? OMG.
no subject
I've in some episode reactions how people think this Arthur is like Arthur from the first half of S1, and I can totally see that. Who was I telling that I think Arthur went to prattish bully to noble with a side of snark way too quickly? On his journey of depratification, I feel like 2.01 Arthur is the missing link.
RIGHT?! I CANNOT WAIT FOR PENDRAGON FAMILY DRAMA. THE TIES THAT BIND.
I don't know who that knight is but his performance was pretty compelling. I hope the knights get some actual names and personalities this season, instead of just being killed off. I need more minor characters to overinvest myself in.
no subject
Oooh, I think that makes sense. He's backsliding, or maybe we just didn't see it until now.
Seriously--last season you really had to reach with some of the minor characters, and then they died. It'd be nice to have a three-dimensional knight or two.

Dear god, I just kept watching and going "So much money. Soooo much more money."
- omg when Uther goes "...Idiot," at Merlin. Like son like father! <33
We laughed so hard we had to rewind and watch again because we missed part of the dialogue.
Gaius, what is your issue?!
WHO EVEN KNOWS?!?!
HILARIOUSEST FIGHT EVER. EVER.
TRUE FACT.
Also the end would have been infinitely less WTF if they had just skipped the whole "being possessed" part. Srsly.
I WANT GWEN TO LEAD THE REVOLUTION.

dude, totally not enough Gwen and Morgana (and kind of lame repetitive scenes when they were there.) :\
and ok--so am i the only one who is seeing the Arthur/Merlin dynamic like--Arthur is kind of being a douche, but in a eyerolling way where he knows Merlin is sort of in on the joke and it's their used-to-each-other-comfortable dynamic ("Look Merlin, other people think this is an honor!") but Merlin is sort of mollycoddling him after the whole near-death thing and bending to his every whim (which i really hope we'll see Arthur later react to with "Stop it! I'm all better now! Stop it or I'll be even more of an arse so you can at least call me a clodpole or something!") and stressed and serious and god, doesn't he look so devastated in that stable scene? which--the way Arthur handled that scene made a lot of sense to me as a new dynamic. the one where Arthur is being a brat after his recovery and pushing Merlin, but when he sees Merlin just pass out like that, is secretly concerned and only annoyed that Merlin is being openly disrespectful in front of other people and trying to maintain douchey front while he basically orders Merlin to get some rest.
meanwhile, poor serious!Merlin is still dealing with trauma of Arthur almost dying, both his parent figures almost dying, himself almost dying, deliberately killing someone, and falling out with his mystical mentor and having his destiny shaken, so exCUSE him if he's a bit touchy. but Arthur is unaware of all of this, and this Cedric fellow is amusing, saved his life, and pisses Merlin off enough that he shows at least brief moments of acting like his usual rebellious self.
but yes. i definitely like angsting Merlin who doesn't appreciate being constantly called an idiot.
and wow, this got long.
no subject
Yeah I can see how recent events have stressed him out, but I don't really see how his mollycoddling to him now is different from his mollycoddling then. And what part of his mollycoddling is just simply being a manservant doing his tasks? Recent events may be a trigger, sure, but I think being pissed off at Arthur for this is a long-time coming. I'm not saying Merlin has to linger on it, 'cos he's not that kind of guy. But just him saying, "This sucks, Arthur sucks (sometimes", at least there's acknowledgment and I like that. Then he gets on with the business of saving the city again and stuff.
because everyone knows that after fire smoke is the coolest result of heat, fuel and oxygen
Except for the smoke machines. Was I the only one that got the impression that the special effects crew, or whatever, thought to themselves 'hey smoke machines in fantasy story: investment!!!' And now they're just throwing in smoke and fog wherever they can? It's like: dude we can do dramatic forest scenes, or--or-- SILHOUETTES or-or....
smoke: handy when you don't actually have real drama!
Handy for hiding anachronistic infrastructure also!!!
Dude, from the looks of it?
Epic Interspecies Love and Stepmum/queen Issues. Unless that's being saved for later. (I really hope they're planning on keeping the characters more... in-character? linearly developing? for the rest of the season though)
I say 'Dude' too much.

IS THE TROLL NEXT? Weird how there was no ep2 trailer at the end, just a trailer for the whole season. So yeah, who's to know.
