I like Arthur's peasantfail and that Gwen is pissed off by it. A good way of alleviating the cheesiness of Arthur/Gwen from last episode. They've got a long way to go before troo love, and this tension is a good way of slowing things down.

The lessons in equality and respect that Gwen's been giving Arthur are null and void when Merlin's around, apparently. Arthur's still treating him like shit. Maybe if Merlin grew some breasts. I mean in all seriousness, I think that Arthur's prattishness is only occasionally affectionate, and the rest of the time it's genuine assholery, accidentally AND otherwise. I mean for god's sake, "fetch me a mattress"? He may genuinely care for people, for Merlin and Gwen and whoever, but he cares about them in a selfish way viz. seeing them more in context of his world, instead of seeing himself in context of theirs. (The exception is Uther, but that is a different kettle of fish entirely.) Or maybe he really is just that emotionally repressed, who the hell knows.

But honestly, I like that Arthur is a jerk again, because I always felt like S1 Arthur grew up too quickly. Plus, when he is a jerk, his moments of kingliness are that much more delightful.

The kiss is... kind of out of nowhere? I don't get it! I mean, I was \o/ but I was also ???. I had no inkling at all that Arthur was into her beyond thinking she's hot and nice. He was an ignorant ass and it irritated Gwen, and... now they are kissing?! What kind of a message is that?!

Myror is also apparently an awesome jouster! Cool. And for real, does no one else notice that Merlin is suddenly working for some rando knight now? Why does no one care?

What is the Latin they are chanting in the background? What are they saying?

Was Christian hell always this industrialized? I don't have my Sandmans with me so I can't check. It's like, the Industrial Revolution... in hell!! And I wonder if there is some demon who gets all polemical about how things aren't what they used to be, that punishment was once a craft amongst demons, but now it is a homogenized product. Industry robs the demons of dignity, and we must go back to emphasizing quality of punishment rather than quantity of punishment. We cannot allow ourselves to become alienated from what makes us demons, but how can we do that if all we do all day is guard mills and crank levers and push buttons?

The story itself is pretty engrossing, if gaudy in places (I'm looking at you, old-timey London Christian hell arc!). For a story mostly about non-humans, it is such a strongly humanist story, all about individualism and choice and flipping off predestination. You are your own creator. If you are wingless, it is because you chose for them to be cut off. If you only have half a face, it is because that is the face you wanted. Christopher Rudd's story is pretty much the American dream, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and making something of yourself by staying true to yourself. He climbed his way up the ladder OF HELL. DAMN, SON. And the reason Rudd was plucked from the horde of damned souls because he was still true to his faith, praying his prayers aloud.

On culturally and historically specific hells. So, our conception of Christian hell is pretty much... Dante? It's not a timeless thing. And the Biblespeak with archaic phrasing, that's not a timeless thing either. What will hell look like in a few centuries? How will angels and demons speak in our stories? Will our current phrasings be appropriated by the future to represent something ancient? That will be funny.

UM I LOVE MAZIKEEN A LOT. She is my favorite. I love that she is not whole with a whole face. I love that she is loyal without being subservient. What a fucking badass. I ship Mazikeen/Lucifer hardcore, but how do they get it on if he has no genitalia?

And Elaine Belloc oh my god <333 her huge crush on the devil <333 and Jill Presto is GREAT.

BUT OKAY. So Lucifer made this universe outside of God's jurisdiction and forbids worship there. Um. I don't understand how that works because the shape of worship and faith can exist outside of religion, they're just called something else. Some people love God the way other people love their spouse or their family or their art, a deep devoted thing that shapes and centers you, but guts you too. Like when bad things happen, you can say, "At least I still have this," even if sometimes the sentiment doesn't really make outward sense, but you say it anyway, because somehow it's still true. I feel like Lucifer's proclamation of NO WORSHIP ALLOWED is just like God's thing about not eating the apple. Eventually someone will come along and ask, "Why not?" At least God was being specific when he said don't eat the apple, but what does Lucifer even mean by 'worship' here? Is he cool with faith though? Is this going to be addressed in the later books?

I think the A/G kiss confused a lot of people, but I guess I've kissed guys with less build-up than that and wasn't in lurve, so it didn't strike me as a HUGE DEAL except for the fact that this is the first kiss between ARTHUR AND GUINEVERRRRE, and everything. Anyway I'm willing to forgive it on account of how flipping gorgeous it was. :P

But yeah, Arthur really didn't change from the beginning of the ep, LOL. He didn't really do anything different, he just thought about it more before proceeding to be a jerk. IDK, but if he'd done a 180 that would've been weird as well. I figure they just got caught in the moment? Because afterward they were both sort of "...ohshit" about it all, which I think helped sell it to me. And then it was back to reality and gorgeous wistful glances.

Stretching it out over more than one episode would've helped, but mostly I thought it was made of puppies and daisies. XP

AND NEXT WEEK OHGOD.

EXACTLY: Arthur/Guinevere is this huge looming thing, this big romance of the ages, doomed though it is, and the kiss just felt... kind of premature. Oh well, I guess even destined love has to start somewhere. I wasn't expecting the kiss to be in episode 2. I thought maybe at least halfway through season 2! AT LEAST.

Ya it seems like Arthur's journey will still be one of learning humility, which I'm happy about. 'Cos if he's already that supernoble to begin with, then his journey to kingship will be less interesting. And anyway as far as being supernoble go, we've got Lancelot. XD

Definitely, I was actually afraid it might happen in this ep and worried that it would seem too rushed - and it WAS rushed, but the way it played out (and I suspect this was more to do with the acting than the writing), it also felt like a situation that could actually happen between two people, even if it wasn't what I was anticipating or what I'd have written. So I bought it.

...or, could be I'm a sucka for the prettiness of it all. I can own to that. XD

I know, I really need to know his deal with Hunith. Like are they related, did they used to go out, WHAT IS THE DEAL? I can't write their epic tale of awesome and maybe love interests if Gaius ends up being her brother or something later.

People have requested Bradley/Will Mellor and Colin/RLEdwin but I can't believe there is not a Joe Dempsie request to be found. HMMMM.

Now that I am over my initial flailing (which might come back at any time) I'm sort of worried that the writers are going to use the "our love can never be because of my father" roadblock to circumvent any actual development of the relationship. I am not sure how much sense that made!

Also, Luuuuucifer. When I first read Sandman, I felt like Neil Gaiman got so caught up in worldbuilding (which was awesome, I cannot deny) that he forgot to make sense sometimes, even wrt characters; with Mike Carey I feel like it is the exact opposite: he's more interested in character motivation than like, plots that are in an way coherent. So yes, the worship thing is addressed, but not the faith v. worship thing as much, and sometimes it is pretty silly. But I cannot even care because Lass! He writes women who are imperfect but fully realized, and pretty transcendent and who advance the plot through their own actions and not just because they exist and who even (gasp!) have relationships with each other. How rare is this in comic books, man. I strongly suspect that the reason that most of the central characters are women is some sort of literary subversion, which is irritating, but it is so masterfully done that I am mostly cool with it. I love them alllllll. I never really liked the Lys/Rudd storyline either, but I love her. And Lucifer/Mazikeen is pretty much my OTP of OTPS I cannot even. I have tunnel vision, I admit.

No, I can see that. Arthur can't marry some orphaned maid, he has to marry not as Arthur but as Camelot. But at the speed the relationship is going, maybe it will instill some needed slow-burn into it.

His women are indeed AWESOME. They are the best! I really love the group of girls in Book 1 just drinking beer and smoking weed, because it's so rare that girls just casually hang out like this in stories, comics or otherwise! More girls just chilling (not necessarily partying!) with booze and weed please!

The show IS moving quite fast! It's like they're thinking "Okay, Series 1 was when we got to screw around, but now we actually have to stuff in more bits from the legends!" And it's like, I dunno. Has the awesomeness of fandom raised our expectations for our canon or something?

I'm pretty sure Arthur is just dallying with the servants! As princes do. And then the arc won't be "How can they be together?" but "How can this turn into a real relationship?" and "Will Morgana kill Arthur?"
