these are a few of my favorite things (recently)

1. I got a Google Reader account and my Shared Items are here. GReader is like an RSS feed except you can add blogs that aren't RSS-able and also publicly share interesting posts. So, I've been on the lookout for interesting blogs. I particularly like Missives from Marx, which is written by a theology professor who writes about all sorts of things and not just Marx and theology. I also like M.S. Corley, who is an illustrator/designer who has recently been reimagining a lot of book covers and characters. Do you guys have cool blogs you'd recommend me? Preferably one with short entries or pretty pictures?

2. [livejournal.com profile] movementmvt, or Movement Movement, is the brainchild of [livejournal.com profile] zempasuchil. The premise of the comm is 'fandom/academia OTP!!1' "This comm was created as a forum to bring academic things together with literary/fannish things, share the geekitude, and rejoice. Please post your Merlin fanfic that deals with the class differences, your speculations on imperialism in fantasy, what Max Weber has to say about Narnia, how anthropology-fail Temperance Brennan is sometimes, questions on worldbuilding, examinations of the nature of myth, neat quotes that should totally be fic prompts, links to these things if they already are out there, etcetera, etcetera." Also, anthrolology is my new favorite word. Join! Geek out! Embrace your inner pretentious nerrrrd!

3. Who cares about an Australian show from the 90s about scientists living in an underwater facility and a foundling who can talk to whales? I do! Oh 'Ocean Girl'! Oh man, these kids! I love their loyalty to each other. I love tech wiz Froggy and clever Zoe and prickly Vanessa. I don't necessarily like how Jason has appointed himself official protector of everyone (which is the primary reason why I can't get behind Jason/Neri), but I find it interesting at least. And NERI, oh how the actress can play open-hearted and kind and otherworldly without being ingratiatingly beatific and holier-than-thou <3. And the show is also like, "Save our oceans!!" Come watch this show with me, guys.

4. Also rewatching 'The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest', unsurprisingly, THANKS YULETIDE NOMINATED FANDOMS LIST. Hey, remember when they said they were making a live-action Jonny Quest movie with Zac Efron in the titular role and then no one said anything about it ever again? Well. Also, did anyone else frequent this site to read JQ fanfic, back in the day? 'Jonny Quest' is so going on my would-write-for list for Yuletide. There is only one Jonny Quest fic on Yuletide and this needs to be rectified.

5. In the interest of full disclosure, I posted the Durkheim quotes from Forms & Foundations in a post here. If I missed any, please do tell. I'm not trying to claim anything of Durkheim's as my own!

I've been rewatching Jonny Quest recently, too! Good times. :)

SO GOOD. Jonny/Jessie/Hadji OT3!

[identity profile] nevacaruso.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to write fanfic for that show when I was about fourteen. I had no concept of OT3 then, though I definitely 'shipped Hadji/Jessie.

Now? SO OT3!

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Nor did I, and I shipped Jonny/Jessie, but now I have seen the light of multishipping and I can't go back. omg I wrote and loved such terrible fanfic for this show!

THE MOVEMENT MOVEMENT SPREADS. <33333 wheeeeeee!

ALSO, this 'Ocean Girl' show sounds greatly interesting! perhaps sometime I shall have to hunt it down and watch it! next semester perhaps, when I only have two/three classes?

and your GoogleReader shared items are fabulous - Emma Watson! girl is so gorgeous.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
When you are ready, just ask and I'll PM you the link. I admit, this show has got some plot holes, but it's just so compelling. Also it proves to my boyfriend that my habit of saying 'reckon' is not an American South influence, but Australian influence XD. I knew a lot of Australians growing up.

Emma Watson being gorgeous! + Emma Watson doing high-fashion photo shoots! = immediate adding to my GReader

Also rewatching 'The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest'

Tell me how you are doing this so I can do it too.

Ocean Girrrrl! lol at how Neri was pretty an aquatic Tarzan, and man there are plot holes, but oh gosh this show <3333

I went and looked at that MS Corley blog and the first thing I saw was Madeleine L'Engle illustrations! You have no idea how much I loved her when I was a kid. I think I read everything she'd published at the time. Which was a lot.

I read all the Time Quintet and enjoyed it, though I read them in the wrong order. I reread Wrinkle in Time last year and now I want to revisit the rest of the series. What is this persistent nostalgia I am feeling lately?

[identity profile] marycontraire.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, but it must be contagious! I've been rereading the Anne of Green Gables books and The Subtle Knife. Instead of doing my homework. Obviously.

I have subscribed to your shared items! \o/ And I'm watching that comm, but the only "academia" I have experienced in my life was some superficial linguistics and some thoughts on translation, so. ::hides in the shadows:: But the concept is so cool! So nerdy! So highbrow/lowbrow!

Anyway. Are you following this blog (http://ragbag.tumblr.com/) yet?

-A.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hurrah! What is your GReader account?

Heee, making the lowbrow highbrow and the highbrow lowbrow! It'll be... fun??!? XD

Not yet! It looks absolutely delightful, however!

I love how your Google Reader (when I read it like, uh, ages ago) was like colonialism + Emma Watson. <333 I am totally going to follow you though!

This (http://talulahmankiller.wordpress.com/) is a blog I like--short entries and she's pretty funny.

colonialism + Emma Watson
Haha, my interests are varied but not very varied. Emma Watson just keeps getting prettier, I don't know how she does it. Thanks for the blog rec :)
