Great Scott!
I rewatched most of 'Back to the Future' last night and let me tell you, the friendship between Marty McFly and Emmet Brown is an epic one that transcends time and space.
Perhaps we should start with the question: how did they meet? How did they become such good friends? Because they are TOTALLY BFFs. Doc calls Marty in the middle of the night and is like, "Hey, come down to the mall parking lot and help me run an experiment." And MARTY GOES. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. What?! (Also, no one is questioning why a kid is hanging out with the crazy old guy. Um.) And Marty just casually stops by Doc's house in the morning before school like it ain't no thang. The film starts off wham-bam with so much trust and a lot of history (lolol!) implicit between them.
THEN. Wham-bam, Marty travels back to 1955. The first person he looks up in the phone-book is Doc Brown, and fair enough, 'cos Doc got Marty into this mess, his younger self can hopefully get him out. (TANGENT: 1955!Doc lives on Riverside Drive, and me and my friend squealed like dorks because I am, right now, living on Riverside Drive. Marty's coming to us!!) BUT this is significant more because this is the first time that the Doc meets Marty. We never see the first time Marty in the 80s meets Doc Brown, but we can assume (unless all that science done fucked up Doc's head) that Doc knew the friendship was going to happen, and so maybe seeks him out, maybe helps it along, or maybe does these things subconsciously because he knows friendship with Marty is inevitable because 1955 already happened. They have already been friends, before.
They didn't meet for the first time at the same time, but - just like when Doc Brown met Marty for the first time in 1955, Marty already knew they were gonna be friends - the Doc knew in the 80s when little Marty met HIM for the first time, that they were gonna be friends. IT IS LIKE A MOBIUS FRIENDSHIP. Causality is for losers! IN A WAY, THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PALS. Who needs you, space-time continuum?? Not these guys.

Michael J. Fox is like, "Check out my crotch."
This movie. IS SO GREAT. Gah, I love it so much, it merits a billion rewatches. All the hints and foreshadowing in the beginning are SO WELL-DONE, and when you know what's going on, you're like, "Ohhhh, I get it now, I see. That's brilliant!" Chekhov would've been proud.
I think half the flist has seen this, but if you haven't: what is manpain? Also, the latest xkcd is especially relevant to my interests.
jfsldfjds a friend of a friend is like, "Hey, come up on Saturday and jam with me and some people because I'm trying to put together a performance about female voices/sounds." And I don't understand why I am considering saying no?!
CONS
- Safety. It's up in the Bronx at 9:00 PM and I'll be lugging around my guitar.
- Skill. I sing better than I play, I'm no Malmsteen or whatever.
- I know only one person there?
- Shouldn't I be focusing on my job search?
- Shouldn't I be focusing on my thesis?
- Shouldn't I be writing for Solstice and Yuletide? I wish I can babble about my Solstice fic, but alas, secrecy.
PROS
- It's only half an hour away.
- I'm on-sched with Solstice, and Yuletide is a month away.
- Thesis and job search are, uh... Actually I don't think this should go under Pros.
- It's only one night and I am obviously just making excuses.
- omg self, haven't you always wanted to perform in New York and get involved in the scene, and here is someone who is immersed in it practically offering it to you on a silver platter. What is wrong with you. So you don't play guitar well or whatever, well then HARMONIZE OR SOME SHIT. GO, FOR FUCK'S SAKE. Gooooooooo.
I really should go, shouldn't I.

IT SOUNDS LIKE AN AWESOME OPPORTUNITY IN WHICH YOU WILL FEEL GOOD ABOUT GOING :DDD putting yourself out there is pretty much always rewarding, at least you know in situations like this!
as for back to the future, you HAVE seen Brokeback to the Future, right? my reaction was half "augh" and half "awwwwwww!"

I think Marty likes Doc because Doc treats him as an equal and listens to him more than his self-absorbed parents do, and considering he has two older siblings who never listen to him either. To Doc, Marty is a partner, someone to share his crazy schemes with who doesn't judge him, and Marty helps bring Doc's dreaming back to practical earth as well as being a general dogsbody and lugging things around.
OMG do the jam thing, that sounds WICKED.

That too, the listening to each other. And even that has a destiny thing to it. It's like they've always been anticipating each other. Oh man, I dunno, maybe I should write BTTF fic, getting such bunnies.

Did you ever learn that tune that goes, "A circle's round, it has no end, that's how long I'm going to be your friend!" That's like Marty and Doc, friends 4 lyf!
