Narnia: Christmas Past

Written for [livejournal.com profile] marycontraire's fandom stocking.

Christmas Past
Narnia. Susan, Edmund (Jadis). Rated G. 323 words.
Golden Age fic. It's Christmas, and Edmund and Susan are up early as usual.

"What do you think Jadis would have thought of Christmas?" Edmund asks, seemingly out of nowhere.

Susan frowns. It's been years now since Aslan slew the Witch in battle, and Edmund's sudden question makes her wary. He doesn't tend to mention the White Witch much, and neither does anyone else for that matter. It is an unspoken "don't mention it until he does" policy, but Edmund always brings her up a little more often during the wintertime. He always calls her Jadis, never the Witch, as if recalling an old lover.

"Obviously she didn't like it," Susan replies. "That's why she kept it out of Narnia for a hundred years. Why do you ask?"

"Maybe she just never had a proper Christmas," Edmund muses. "One with carols and boughs of holly, and proper presents."

"You were quite fond of her presents, if I recall."

"Mmm."

Her brother has a faraway look in his eyes as he gazes unseeing at the winter landscape. The sun has not yet fully risen, but Susan and Edmund have always been early risers. There are always a million little things to do before the Christmas festivities truly begin later this morning.

"I think," Susan says, "that Father Christmas would have given her a lump of coal. It would just dirty her hands and her pretty dresses, and she wouldn't like it at all, so perhaps it's just as well."

Edmund concedes a smile as he turns to look at her, and it is a brittler smile than Susan expects. She steps closer and adjusts the collar of his shirt and the wrinkles in his tunic, and then she puts her hands on his cheeks and kisses his forehead. "Come, Edmund," she says. "We've still some gifts to sort before everyone wakes up."

"The duties of a king," Edmund sighs facetiously, which makes her laugh, and arm in arm they make their way to the main hall.
