I JUST BORROWED IT. FROM YOUR PANTS.

But what are your thoughts on Supernatural?

Dean is such a nerd. SUCH A NERD, and he thinks Sam's the geeky one? Dean makes cheesy references whenever he can. MUCH LIKE THE SHOW. FREX: X-Files jokes, ALL OVER THE PLACE. And hey no wonder, because Supernatural director/producer Kim Manners was once a director/producer for the X-Files, and he was up to the same old tricks. ("So there are these two people, right? They hunt monsters and secretly want to do each other.")

ALSO. In 5x03, Mitch Pileggi played Dean and Sam's grandfather. TO EMPHASIZE: Assistant Director Skinner played the Winchester grandfather, HOW WONDERFUL. Would it be weird if David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson guest-starred in some capacity? Perhaps yes, but it would also be awesome.

Another thing about 5x03, when Dean and John were in the diner and someone yelled, "Winchester!", did you get Back to the Future flashbacks? Of course you did. But 5x03 is mad sad, man, what with Mary wanting to get out and John being everything a hunter isn't :( . But it also has Dean saying, "MY DAD CAN SEE THE FUTURE," 'cos this show is surprisingly good at bringing the crack.

Frex: "It's a Terrible Life". I was like, "...Did someone mistake an AU fanfic for the shooting script?! What is this thing?!?" LOL SMITH & WESSON. LOL REAL ACTUAL GHOST HUNTERS. Zachariah is a hoot. This is probably a real AU fic out there, right? Dean Smith and Sam Wesson navigate the corporate world and their gay feelings for each other as they fuck in closets during lunch breaks and company Christmas parties?

Speaking of AUs, how much do I love "Changing Channels"? I don't think I have words to express. I wanted this episode to continue FOREVER. Sam and Dean in America's Next Top Model! Sam and Dean in a telenovela! SAM AND DEAN IN A CARTOON.

AND THEN. AND THEN 5x09, during which I just laffed and laffed and laffed.
1) I JUST BORROWED IT. FROM YOUR PANTS.
2) FRIGHTENED LITTLE BOY: THE SECRET LIFE OF DEAN
3) <3333 WE'RE PARTNERS <333 HOWDY PARTNERS <3333

Can it get more delightful than this?! Because really, can it get more delightful than CHUCK, whom I love. (Barging in on Sam and Lilith all, "I AM THE PROPHET CHUCK"? Bestest.) I probably have a Chuckfic in me somewhere. Better dislodge it before I sprain something. I kind of wish Chuck's books were already up to the Castiel episodes, so we can get seriouser with the Dean/Castiel innuendo. COME ON NOW.

Hey DEAN. YOU CRY ALL THE TIME. ALL THE TIME. Granted, your life is pretty stressful, but you're totally fronting with your hard rock and girls girls girls shtick. You're in touch with your tears, and you love your geeky jokes, and you totes kind of liked those panties. Also, you can say HELLO WE ARE TEDDY BEAR DOCTORS with a straight face. (IT HAS LOLLIPOP DISEASE.) What're we gonna do with you, Dean?

I'm slowly but surely making my way through S3. It's nice and relaxing, whereas with S4 and S5 I'm usually too "Is it Castiel time?!??!" to pay attention to anything else.

It seems like if you've got a kink for writing on the body, SPN fic is the place to be. It's protective runes being sexily drawn on sexy people all over the place. I approve!

but it's like Dean has this set idea of What A Man Is in his head,

Totally agree with this, 100%; in a way his childhood was a very isolated experience, insofar as psychological development and emotional maturity. The episodes showing him as a boy/teen are downright painful for me to watch. I also see a lot of "the Pleaser" in his personality (which I explored a bit in my story "South for the Winter"), so I think he submerged a lot of himself into the ideas of who he was supposed to be to his father and later, his younger brother. IMHO, ep 1.01 was mostly a display of Dean's unwillingness to exist outside of the family dynamic; without it, he doesn't even know who he is. (again, IMHO!)

RE: Fandom
I'm a latecomer as well, first ep. watched was "Monster at the End of this Book" (and? OMG Prophet Chuck is MY PRECIOUS! I adore him; that said, I'm working on a girl!Chuck fic. Well...never said I was a balanced person...). There is a lot of meta out there, but I have to honestly say I've never been impressed with it. For such a HUGE fandom, I thought there would be more thoughtful discussion going on; but I think things hampered by its early years where the fandom was VERY insane and inhabited mostly by the incredibly immature. When I wrote some SPN meta of my own I was warned off posting it anywhere but my personal LJ, due to the fact that anything criticizing a character or criticizing fandom interpretations of a character more often than not lead to flame wars. *sigh* SPNheavymeta and SPNforthesane seem relatively free of wank, but I still tread carefully, which in and of itself is limiting. :(

I look at five years of SGA fandom and see some truly amazing stories and meta that just blows me away; three years of LoM fandom has turned out some of the most amazing writing I've ever seen; I turn to five years of SPN fandom and I don't see that at all. Of the dozens of stories posted in SPN land every day, I look for about five writers regularly (including, now, you) and ignore the rest. Which, in a way, means there is just that much more room to grow! *optimist*

Yeah, Dean grew up pretty isolated, and I can see what you mean about him being a pleaser. I think he would explain being a pleaser by insisting he is just a dutiful son and brother who cares about his family. He gives the best parts of himself to his father and brother, so when he does get to be just Dean, he only has the energy for base pursuits. Like, Dean may be a douche sometimes, but nevertheless I think he is the less selfish Winchester. Also I think it's pretty telling that Dean likes to talk using pop culture references, and can hold entire conversations like that. He must have watched a lot of TV and movies when he was younger, because he didn't have any friends :(

Chuck is THE BEST. I love him so much and relate to him maybe more than I should, and the idea of girl!Chuck makes my mind glee out in all sorts of ways. I kind of have an idea about a Becky story, but I wonder if it's too early in my SPN career to go down that certain road. In general, SPN seems like a much more hardcore fandom than I'm used to. People are paranoid about access to download links, and community profiles are full of caveats that seem to hint at some previous war. People are telling me about the ship wars, tinhats, stalkers, and Castiel pouring yogurt on his face and I'm just like,

It's going to be an adventure! What makes SPN fandom so explosive, I wonder?

Yeah, I've been in Merlin fandom for a couple of years, and my experience has been similar and somewhat akin to being in a puppy pile, if puppy piles also like to write awesome fic and call out the sexist/racist bullshit on the show. How did the RaceFail debacle filter through in SPN fandom? Did a lot of people step up? 'Cos SPN is not without its sexist/racist bullshit too.

(including, now, you)
:D I'm so chuffed! <33 Aww! Out of curiosity who are the other writers you follow? I'm still flailing around in this brave new world and wouldn't mind a push in the right direction. ;)

Recs: Not a lot. But...

Run, don't walk, to entangled_now's fic at [livejournal.com profile] libraryofsol, particularly her wonderful "Fourth Wall" series.

Waldorph has drifted into the ST:Reboot fandom, but this is one of my faves: Anything Worth Dying For (http://waldorph.livejournal.com/112428.html)

My favorite SPN fic ever is pre-slash or gen, as you will, but features CAS THE DINOSAUR. No really. It isn't crack, it is the episode that should have been: SOmething PRimal (http://luchia13.livejournal.com/217898.html) by luchia13.

A lot of people adore [Unknown site tag] and I can't argue with the quality of writing, but it is unredeemably dark!fic, which is not to my tastes (also, Sam/Dean). Still, mesmerizing stuff.

I love [livejournal.com profile] strangeandcharm for good quality writing. Two friends of mine from The Professionals and LoM fandom are getting into SPN, and they are fantastic writers: [livejournal.com profile] callistosh65 and [livejournal.com profile] erushi - erushi just wrote a wonderful, wonderful Bela backstory fic. We were doing an SPN rewatch but got stalled over the holidays at 1.12, although we plan on picking that up again. (if we do I'll let you know!)

I put a lot of faith in the Dean/Castiel rec comm, [livejournal.com profile] rec_hymenated; for Sam/Dean (which I do not read much of, although I tend to surprise myself with a newfound fancy for girl!Sam or girl!Dean fic) there is [livejournal.com profile] sawedoff_recs.

I'll be honest and admit I have not trawled the J2_spn_big_bang archives, because quite frankly I'm not a huge Wincest reader and I don't do RPS (ie J2) and I'm not a fan of AUs. Which, there goes every story ever posted prior to 4.01 and the introduction of Castiel. LOL! There was a holiday gift exchange in late 2008 which had some WONDERFUL stories and of course I lost the link to the master post for it...I'll find it...later...

My girl!Chuck story is going to be my exploration of meta-sue fic, just to warn you off early. But I have a personal mission to readdress the sad lack of acceptance for OCs in fandom, and this is the roundabout route I plan on taking. Don't get me started, I will bleed meta on the subject. ;)

He gives the best parts of himself to his father and brother, so when he does get to be just Dean, he only has the energy for base pursuits.
Wow, yes, excellent way to boil that down. I also like how you've link his pop culture references to a childhood lacking exposure to peers, and full of television while babysitting his brother. Spot ON!

RE: Fandom
Personally I think all the paranoia was born out of the defensive posture of the original fans, who were ALL either Wincesters or J2 fans, representing two of the most maligned genres in fanfiction (incest and RPS). As you've pointed out re: Merlin, the relative youth of fans does not prohibit mature behavior, but the circumstances all seemed to work against the SPN fans, especially once the "batshitcrazai" reputation kicked in. I know me and few of my flist were VERY wary of joining the fandom, but I sure haven't regretted it. ♥

I'm not honestly sure how the SPN fandom stepped on the racefail!2009; it happened just as I was getting into the fandom. But again, we are back to the "not so much deep meta" going on (except maybe on personal journals instead of comms), so there may have been a lot of it I never saw.

ZOMG SO MANY RECS. You're awesome for compiling this, thank you! :D

The Fourth Wall series is pretty awesome. Got some giggles out of me for sure. DINOSAUR!CAS, whaaaat. That sounds delightful! Hmm, I like darkfic but I'm not really into the Wincest, nor the RPS. Not in this fandom anyway. I do RPS and incest in other fandoms, but in SPN I'm pretty comfortable poking around the Dean/Castiel side of things for now, with occasional forays into crack and Chuck. Whether I'd do Wincestuous overtones is maybe a different matter.

I have friended rec_hymenated. I cannot wait to spend too much time on it.

I don't want to spoil anything but I think your girl!Chuck fic and my Becky fic are gonna have some interesting similarities ;). I guess that's not surprising though, considering how meta Chuck and Becky are to begin with.

I wasn't talking about the age of Merlin fans when I said 'puppy pile', more like how everyone is just happy and hyper and supportive and full of love for each other. There hasn't been fandom-shaking wanks that I can remember. SPN fandom celebrates the darkness more, whereas Merlin fandom seems to insist on glitter. That I've seen, that is. Frex when I was first clicking around for fics, I was like, "What is this whumpage that people keep talking about??"

I also hear that fans hate on Bela Talbot and Jo? If so, why?! They're great!

Now I'm really excited to read your Becky fic! :)

Rec_hymenated will EAT YOUR SOUL. Just sayin'...

I wasn't talking about the age of Merlin fans when I said 'puppy pile'
Ahhhh...I see what you mean. My own biases just led to a wrong assumption; I get what you are talking about, now, because my other fandoms of choice (Hot Fuzz, Life on Mars) are very "puppy pile" like in being supportive and open minded and accepting of everyone involved. I've been part of one fandom kerfluffle and that really made me gun shy and nervous about trying to get into another fandom, but so far so good! That said, I DO think the average maturity level in the SPN fandom is very, very low - reflected not just by the wank, but by the stories people are posting. And? I'm sick until death of "AU 1/?" WIPs. Gah. ....anyway, moving on...

Bwwwahahahaha whumpage! The LoM fandom is whumpage heavy, so your comment made me laugh. I'm working on the LoM FanLore page and I'm giving it a whole section on character whumpage. LOL! *face!palm*

You know what? I *understand* why people don't like Bela or Jo, but I don't *get* it. Personally I think it harks back the aforementioned maturity level, in that mostly the characters were maligned simply for being potential love interests for the Winchesters. Personally I track Jo in the little sister role, but I think the actress who played her was great and she is a fascinating character herself, so I can see why people would ship Dean/Jo even though I don't. Bela I just ADORE so hard - yeah, she was a foil for the boys, but she was totally their equal in ways many other characters were not (even Ruby, who was major, but IMHO she was just lucky to take advantage of Sam during his weakest moments). I think the same kind of reaction is true about Anna - people HATE her and IMHO its only because she dared to have sex with Dean. She's very interesting otherwise.

Okay, so really, Husband is glaring at me as he is hungry and it is officially date night...so of course I'm doing meta on SPN. HAHAHHAAA! No, seriously, I need to go now... :)

(btw, I shall friend you now. *evil laughter*)

The 'whump' is one of the major differences for me coming in from sparkly Merlin fandom. I feel like SPN fandom is more open to sad endings, doomed OTPs, and moral ambiguity, but this is probably the fault of the types of shows they are. Merlin's got unicorns resurrected through the power of true love, but in Supernatural, as Dean has informed us, it is a unicornless world.

I can see why I wouldn't have liked them once upon a time. I would have seen them as Mary Sues, because they're kinda fabulous. I think part of it may be this, that fandom in general has hypersensitive MarySuephobia. It's something we need to get over: just 'cos a lady has some great qualities, doesn't make her a Mary Sue. Man, how much did I love Bela telling Dean, "We should have angry sex," and Dean is just like, "...?!?!?!?" Perfect. Ha, and I did not even realize there was Anna hate going on!
