1.15 The Benders -- I like the policewoman a lot. Also, creepy hillbillies. SPN's answer to the X-Files's "Home".
1.16 Shadow -- Father-son bonding time!
1.19 Provenance -- The chick of the week was pretty cool.

S2: Is Sam a monster? Why do some people have superpowers?
2.01 In My Time of Dying -- In case you didn't get it the first hundred times, the Winchesters' are self-destructively devoted to each other.
2.09 Croatoan -- The crazy-making disease trope! I call it the zombiefier. This sets things up for what is possibly MY FAVORITEST EPISODE in season 5 and ever ever.
2.13 Houses of the Holy -- Because of the faith woes.
2.14 Born Under a Bad Sign -- Because I <3 evil!Sam.
2.15 Tall Tales -- Because it introduces an important character. And it's funny, I guess. SPN's answer to X-Files's "Jose Chung's from Outer Space".
2.18 Hollywood Babylon -- Because it's funny. A haunted film set leads to jokes that jab at the fourth wall. These jabs will become thrillingly ridiculous in seasons 4 and 5.
2.20 What Is and What Should Never Be -- The first of the canon AUs! What if the Winchesters never got into hunting?

S3: How can we stop Dean being cast into Hell? One time, Ruby punched me in the face -- it was AWESOME.
3.02 The Kids Are Alright -- It'll come back in season 5.
3.10 Dream a Little Dream of Me -- Again with the Two Deans towards the end! Also, the last two seconds of the episode is wonderfully creeptastic.
3.11 Mystery Spot -- Best mood whiplash ever. Goes from hilarious to heartbreaking in half-seconds. I love it.
3.13 Ghostfacers -- BECAUSE HILARIOUS. non-SPN fans:Supernatural :: Supernatural fans:Ghostfacers.
3.16 No Rest for the Wicked -- because HO SHIT.

S4: How do we stop Lucifer from rising? And what the hell is up with Sam?
4.03 In the Beginning -- This show loves it's Back to the Future references.
4.04 Metamorphosis -- This is the first episode of SPN I ever watched, so I have a soft spot for it. More "am I a monster/human?" angst.
4.06 Yellow Fever -- Dean is terrified and we are entertained.
4.10 Heaven and Hell -- Anna! <3333 This is the second episode of a two-parter.
4.13 After School Special -- I tend to prefer Dean, but this is the episode where Sam really emotionally resonated with me.
4.14 Sex and Violence -- lol brotherly love <333 How so shameless, show?
4.16 On the Head of a Pin -- EEEEEEEVERYTHIIIIIIIING <3333
4.17 It's a Terrible Life -- Office AU \o/. Also, the introduction of Zachariah.
4.18 The Monster at the End of this Book -- WHO NEEDS FOURTH WALLS? One of my favorite episodes.

5.04 The End -- THE APOCALYPSE AU. I have written SO MUCH FIC about this episode. And look, more Two Deans! and omg Cas. Just... Cas. THIS EPISODE <33333333333333456 HOLY CAPSLOCK, BATMAN!
5.08 Changing Channels -- STUCK IN TVLAND. CANON FUSION CRACKFIC AUS.
5.09 The Real Ghostbusters -- SAM AND DEAN GO TO A FAN CONVENTION, HILARITY ENSUES. THE RETURN OF BECKY. This is the most self-referential episode of them all. IIIII FUCKING LOVE IT.
5.13 The Song Remains the Same -- Anna just wants to save the world.
5.14 My Bloody Valentine -- Of hunger, addiction, and PTSD.
5.16 Dark Side of the Moon -- HEARTBREAK-O-METER SET TO LUDICROUS SPEED \o/
5.18 Point of No Return -- The show mistaking fanservice for characterization again and IT IS GREAT. NO SERIOUSLY. One of the very best.

SOME CAVEATS: All season premieres/finales are recommended watching. All Season 4 episodes with Cas in them are also recommended, and I'm not just saying that; S4!Castiel is Mr. Exposition, and he brings the mytharc to the yard. 5x16 and onwards are very mytharc-relevant, as is 4x21 and 5x10 are pretty important too.

lol your primer is totally a list of the things you like :D just look at the relative size of the seasons.
I feel tempted to make a primer to complement yours because plot be damned, how can you not include S1's Faith or Hell House (SEE ICON) or Something Wicked (oh protective winchester issues <3)... 2.06 has Ellen and Jo! what about the Season 2 finale omfg! and yeah, man, I'm just winchester-happy.

Haha, I know, I know, and how can I not include "It's the Great Pumpking, Sam Winchester" or even "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Crossroad Blues". You and Betsy can do the proper primers, I will just do this. XD In lieu of the 5x22 reaction post that I suspect will never come!

I think I forgot what happened in most of Crossroad blues, obvs I need to watch it again. BUT DANG YEAH ANNA, okay Anna eps would totes all go on my "things I like" list :D (except, The Song Remains the Same, actually, I like for everyone except Anna. I dunno, I struggled with her there.)

no 5x22 reaction post? well, I can't blame you, I was kind of unable to post about it. but whenever it came up in commenting I would just wordvomit everywhere (I think I'm on the mend now, heh).

I understand her motivation, but there's something about her logic that bothers me, but I wonder if it's Anna-specific or if it's just the general WTFness of trying to rationalize time-travel that I find bothersome.

I've run out of emotion for it, but if I were to make a post it would be hypothesizing several codas. The Castroiel that you, me, and 22 have got going, for example. Something about Michael and Lucifer falling eternally through the ether, though maybe this has sort of been jossed because Word of God said something about Sam escaping Hell. So, I guess Hell, not the ether. But I'm sure Mike&Luci tragicomedictimes can still be had in Hell. Also I am still trying to hash out God in my head! Which we are doing in that other thread, I guess. It is definitely helping to conceptualize him as an artist/writer first, God second. As a god first, God second. When it was the other way around, I got easily frustrated.

Totally, I cannot figure it out. Thinking out loud here: maybe it's because before, her motivation put her on Sam and Dean's side, because Sam and Dean are for saving the world. She wasn't just on the same side, she was sympathetic, or so I thought - having her suddenly stop being their friend totally threw me, I was like "wtf Anna since when are you heartless, I thought you were even more heartful cos you were fallen" but I guess that's the contrast between Anna and Cas? Cas may call Sam an abomination but he won't let Anna kill his friend; Anna is just being... utilitarian about it. dang.
And the time-travel was just dslkdfklsd;l I mean before when Dean did it, it was okay with "yeah you couldn't change anything, we just wanted you to know what happened" but THIS one, where the angels are wrestling about changing the past - whut.

Yes! yes totally. Gosh, there are so many codas that can/should be written about this, I am at least really happy about that :D

I don't think it's heartless of her to want to save the world! I think she genuinely likes Team Free Will and ther eis real affection there, but unfortunately right now they seem to be getting in the way of keeping the universe alive. Almost that is the more noble and difficult act to take, choosing the right sacrifice especially when everyone is against you. However I do get the impression that Anna is fighting for humanity here, whereas perhaps now at this point Cas is fighting simply for humans i.e. the Winchesters, sometimes Bobby.

I guess I just felt uncomfortable that they took us to the age-old dilemma of "the individual life or the greater good", and landed her on the side of "sacrifice the individual life for the greater good", which has been the Wrong Side in a lot of stories. And, I felt like we didn't get to see enough of Anna struggle with this? I would've felt better about it with a sense of dilemma for her. maybe I should watch again because I do not remember all of how she presented her case, but I do remember it seemed cold to me :(

Hahaha, this is a fair point. I wonder sometimes how much of the show I like is actually just the fanon that fandom has agreed on, how much fanwanking is already reflexive when watching the show instead of just calling upon it when necessary. (IS IT ALWAYS SO NECESSARY?) Like, I wonder if the longer Anna is an angel, the less likely it is for her to favor the individual life over collective good. She has the human inclination to want to save humanity, sure, but it becomes translated through an angel way of doing things. What's important to me about her is that she isn't malicious in her extermination. She isn't anti-Winchester, she's just pro-universe.

I cannot tell you overmuch about my theory without spoilering you! Soon you will see. Don't worry, God doesn't even become a SORT OF player until S4. Kripke used to say the Devil would never appear on-screen on Supernatural and LOLOL look how well that turned out. Yeah. Pretty much when the angels&apocalypse storyline started, the show changed and fandom was cleft in twain. Well, not really. I'm sure there are a bunch who like monster-hunting AND the fauxpocalypse just fine, but the squeaky wheels, you know! SQUEAK SQUEAK, they say angrily!

I have not! Man, how much do I love The Ivory Horn. Supermuch. Also, I found recs for RESCUE RANGERS FIC IN THE COMMENTS? OMG.

This is a great primer, full of love and lulz. I loved the heading and subheadings for each season. Also, Metamorphosis was the first episode you watched? Eeek! and LOLZ. That's on the list of skeeviest eps! But's it both an awful and awesome introduction.

Animus, I'm so excited for you to start! All I would really add is few more eps in seasons 4 and 5 because they're both so awesome. There's definitely a pattern of increase, 'cause yeah, after 4x01 and OMG CASTIEL THE EYES! fandom truly was cleft in twain. I honestly barely remember the events of seasons 1-3 and anyhow it's totally not imporatant because OMG CASTIEL'S BEAUTY and DEAN DEAN DEAN.

Metamorphosis was pretty gross, yeah. I randomly caught it on TV and was like, "Oh right, the incestuous brothers show! ...OH I SEE." I feel kinda bad glossing over Ruby and Bela in S3, but S3 is kinda the most abysmal season and I guess Bela isn't that important in the grand scheme of things anyway... I HOPE SHE COMES BACK IN SEASON 6 THOUGH. I guess 4x09 and whatever episodes Jus In Bello and Simon Said were are relevant to the mytharc too, but I didn't enjoy them as much as I enjoyed these other episodes.
