Claire's phone rings at three in the morning. Predictably, it's Ben on the other side, chattering at approximately five hundred miles a minute, his voice shaking with something she can't quite identify.
"I have class in five hours, Ben," she interrupts him, still not sure what he's talking about, and then there's the sound of pained breathing over the phone.
"I'm in Hartford," he says, and there's something wrong with his voice, something - oh, fuck.
"What happened?" she snaps, rolling out of bed to snatch her clothes. Her roommate stirs as Ben laughs, a little hysterically, the way he always gets when he's lost just too much blood for safety.
"I've patched myself up, but I need new antibiotics and stuff," he says. "And I can't really move that well. It'll be a day or two, tops, I swear."
"I know, Ben," she says. "Don't worry, I'm coming to get you. You'll be fine. Can you keep talking to me? Don't go to sleep."
