walk-on parts in the war
PILOT: LOL WAT IS DIS MOOSIC. The music is the only difference as far as I can tell. How does this work, was this meant to be any kind of final draft at all, or was the music just a slapdash placemarker for less lolzy music to be put in later? Sam's walking Dean to the car after he breaks into the apartment, and there are ~ORCHESTRAL STRINGS in the background. Sam and Jess make out to "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", and the young man picks up the white lady to "99 Problems". CUTE, GUYS. Speaking of which, how YOUNG they look! Dean's eyes were like superbig.
MOST INTERESTING THOUGH, is when Sam is at that Halloween party in the beginning, and his friend said something like, "Why doesn't your family know about your pre-law successes?" and Sam replied, "Because, we're not exactly the Bradys."
:-O There he is! There's Brady! And his apparently close-knit family! What, he's totally one of those dudes that goes by his last name. Speaking of demonic possession, right:
THE RAPTURE: Was Amelia already possessed by the time they left the house?! WHEN DID SHE GET POSSESSED. WAS IT BEFORE AFTER HER GOODBYE HEARTBREAK WITH JIMMY? It's gotta be before, right, because soon after the men left, she was whaling on Claire. So AMELIA NEVER REALLY GOT TO SAY GOODBYE AT ALL. The entire time in the car, the demon was laughing at her. Her mouth is saying "I'm not going anywhere without you, Jimmy" and the demon is saying how she'll kill him nice and slow, Claire too, and asks Amelia if she knows just how much blood there is in a human body, if she'd like to see. ARGH. FOR A YEAR NOW, Amelia has been trying to get her life back on track, A YEAR, and then Jimmy comes back and holy shit and then HOLY SHIT, and the next thing she knows her husband is dying. The next thing she knows, her husband is no longer her husband and walking out of her life all over again. fjdslfsd FUCK. NOVAKS. ARGH. CAS, YOU GIANT DOUCHE. NO CLOSURE FOR ANYONE EVERRRRRRR.
Jimmy's "Can I see her?" will never not break me. ;___;
Does that mean it's... maybe it's time, maybe it's time for a mini-picspam of the collateral damage we call the Novaks?

If I didn't have twelve thousand fics I needed to write already, I would totally do something about the Novaks.

Hey, guess what I do when I want to TORTURE MYSELF WITH THE ECSTASY OF TRAGEDY AND ALSO CRY LIKE A CHILD? Watch 4x20. Again.
I always figured that Amelia was possessed pretty much right after the whole killing-your-neighbors incident. There's a pause when they're getting in the car and Dean asks "Where's your wife?" and she runs up from somewhere. Somewhere WHERE SHE GOT POSSESSED.
AUGH the spiritual trauma of your husband and daughter being angelic vessels to some douche angel who ruins your life, and YOU'RE THE ONE WITH A DEMON INSIDE YOU. Nobody ever explains to Amelia how it works. Jimmy tells her that Castiel said he's special, it's in his blood. She's probably gonna live her whole life now thinking it's in her blood to be a demon-host who SHOOTS PEOPLE AND CRACKS WISE ABOUT IT.
OTHER THING THAT KILLS ME: Cas was, by all reports, getting the fear of God beat back into him for most of this. He goes straight from that, directly from that, to telling Jimmy that Of course we keep our promises. Of course you have our gratitude.
I LOSE MY SHIT AT THAT POINT, FRANKLY. On behalf of EVERYONE IN THAT ENTIRE SCENE, I lose my shit. Cas who knows exactly what that gratitude looks like, what it's worth. Jimmy who can barely remember thinking this would be worth it, a grand adventure, a giving over for the sake of every soul in the world, a sacrifice worth making. Right up until there's something behind his little girl's eyes and his wife shot him through the stomach and the first time he can feel his body in nearly a year all he feels is blood pumping out through his fingers.
Oh and hey how Dean, because of everything, of Sam, of this horrifying tableau all around him, does nothing. Stands there. Slackjawed. Because this is what it would be like if they followed up with every single family of every single possessed person they ever saw, spoke to, shot, stabbed, exorcised, anything. This is what the trail they leave behind looks like.

Jimmy may have told her to get to Carl and Sally's, but you gotta figure that Amelia believes there's no safe harbor now, since the demon now knows who Carl and Sally are. WHERE IS SHE AND CLAIRE GONNA GO? In a way it only makes sense that she would have Team Free Will's phone numbers and is in contact with them. She is the WIFE OF THEIR ANGEL'S VESSEL AFTER ALL rrrrgggghhhhhjfdshfks CAN CAS NOT SPARE ONE OF HIS THOUSAND EYES TO WATCH OVER THEMMMM? What a trip that would be, hearing your husband's voice twisted over the phone, giving you all sorts of strange instructions and advice. He zaps to where you are and teaches you the Enochian sigils you'll need to protect you and Claire, and Jimmy has always been terrible at languages.
She can't have gone to Carl and Sally's, she can't lead the demons there. WHERE DID SHE GO. MAYBE THE ROADHOUSE. Ellen and Amelia doing tequila shots, and Jo gains a strange creature called a little sister, whom she teaches to shoot guns.
This is what the trail they leave behind looks like.

OMG, THAT. THAT exactly! I just about handed Kripke the knife to cut my heart out at that point.

I can't believe I never thought about it that way before but you're absolutely right. Gah, i have to go re-watch that episode now.

This is why I desperately need Jimmy to come home and help his wife with PTSD. YESTERDAY.

SO HERE'S MY QUESTION - WHEN WAS CLAIRE ANGELIFIED? I think that the moment we see that Amelia is possessed, when she slaps Claire, I sort of think that at that moment Cas is already there. But I dunno. It could be not til she's in the chair. CLAAAAAAAAAAAAAIRE. She always prayed to her guardian angel and then he was there and he saved her Daddy but then he took him away agaaaaaain! And then she and Amelia spend the Apocalypse up in Canada, and when they come back she goes off to college (I dunno how many years in the interim, I've no clue how old she is) and she ends up dropping out to go be a hunter, and eventually she runs into Dean (this is when Ben goes to join her because Claire/Ben, hunters of win is FAB) and finds out that her dad is well and truly gone and the POOR BABY I LOVE HER SO MUCH.
I'm just gonna go sob over these pictures.

I LOOOOOOVE CLAIRE GROWING UP TO BE A HUNTER. I LOVE IT. AND HUNTERSTOGETHER!CLAIRE/BEN IS ANOTHER FAVORITE but especially when also put together with Jesse the Antichrist. Together they are Team Free Will: The Next Generation, and omg look it's my new OT3. Dean and Sam are like the Bobby figures. XD

I have the feeling Kripke originally threw that in as a Brady Bunch reference and then later was all "Hey, you know what would be a cool idea? If Sam's best buddy in college was a demon too! Now what should we call him?" And cue light-bulb.
AMELIA NEVER REALLY GOT TO SAY GOODBYE AT ALL.
Oh man, I mean I know that happened but jeez, I just never really thought about how horrible that must have been for her. I guess I was so wrapped up in Jimmy/Castiel's story that Amelia didn't get all that much of my attention. I really want to see her and Claire again now. I hope we'll get to see how they weathered the apocalypse when everything else around them started turning upside down.
Maybe Claire started obsessively following the news reports- hurricanes, flash fires, mass murders, entire town populations vanishing over night- she'd pore over it all, searching between the inky lines and flipping channels for some sign, some hidden message from her father. Not that she expected to see him (see it) standing in a crowd behind a Fox 5 news reporter. She wasn't that silly, no way would it be that obvious, but she knew eventually there would be something. A sign that would help explain his empty chair at the dinner table every night and the muffled sound of her mother crying in her sleep. Claire didn't know what it would be exactly but she knew what it would tell her: that things are going to start getting better now. That it was worth something. And she knew it was up to her to recognize it when it happened.... Only it never did.

Yes this! OMG I VERY MUCH AGREE WITH CLAIRE LOOKING FOR ANGEL PHENOMENA IN DISASTER STORIES. Bolster that with angel lore research and omg Claire. Starts asking questions about angels to their pastor, but they're some pretty weird questions... Gotta wonder how well little Claire Novak has been coping ever since her father ran off... Religion becomes less about faith and more a practical thing that might get her father back.

When there are rouge angels roaming the earth Castiel will come to Claire as a white light and tell her that she is special, that she can stop this, that all she needs to do is... "Tell me how to kill them," says Claire who is sixteen and sick of her parents crying all the time.
AND THUS NEXT GEN BEGINS.
...omg that forehead pressing pic. it breaks me. brb crying forever and ever and ever because that's all theirs and there's nothing holy about it. ;__;

BUT actually actually -- though I can get on board with Cas talking to her while she was passed out -- my question is, did he even need to? Can you give meaningful consent when you're a minor? Perhaps the hearts of children just open up to angelic light and he didn't even have to ask, he just slipped right in.
