DEATH BY MONKEYS

So I guess I am watching Vampire Diaries now! idk, apparently the CW is a catching disease. Much like when I started watching SPN, my reactions are mostly, "lol, what cheese, oh god i can't stop watching." Speaking of which, here is a summary of a scene from the pilot:

YOUNG BRO: Ah, home after a hard day of being totally normal. But wait, my spidey senses are tingling.
OLDER BRO: It is I, your estranged brother! Breaking and entering into your home, as one does!
YOUNG BRO: GASP.
OLDER BRO: Come back to the life, man. Remember all the fun and UST we used to have?
YOUNG BRO: No, I have left all that behind me! Go invade someone else's personal space!
BOTH BROS: [Fisticuffs.]

Furthermore, look what I found on the intertubes: 8 Reasons Sam/Dean Fans Should Watch The Vampire Diaries

-- They do a good job of fooling you into thinking that Stefan is the unEdward, but LO AND BEHOLD, it is Damon who is creeping on Elena as she sleeps. LOLOL. Well-played, show.

-- I am tremendously amused by Stefan's history-off with the dickwad history teacher. k I admit, some of that stuff I didn't know either, but are we supposed to be impressed that Stefan knows what years the WW2 and the Korean War ended? And when Pearl Harbor was?

-- The only ship I'm shipping so far is Matt/Vicki, because idk. I'm constructing backstory for them in my head already. Matt is surprisingly compelling for being such a textbook woobie.

-- You know who else is surprisingly compelling? Caroline. She does dumb and selfish things, but her motivations ring pretty true for a teenager who just wants to be special, and she ends up breaking my heart all the more because of it.

-- This show is more than just the SPN vampire love triangle AU, but I watch it like it is anyway.

So expect more of that noise! Perhaps a crossover or three. In other news, my flist is reminding me that I should get to the Who finale at some point. But first! I watched Toy Story 3. Here are spoilers!

-- Mr. Potatohead! Mr. Potatohead is on a flatbread! I am sorry, I am sorry, but I am ruined for the ability to handle any tortilla without staring fixedly at it and going, "Are you there, God? It's me, Lassiter." Mr. Tortillahead was so great and cute and CREEPY, which are three adjectives that can also be used to describe the entire movie. I mean, the security monkey? Big baby? (OH GOD BIG BABY. OPENING THE BATHROOM DOOR LIKE SOMEONE DRUNK IN THE MIDDLE OF DAY AND NOT EXPECTING VISITORS. AUGH. big babyyyyyy sitting quietly on the swing set and staring at the moon!)

-- The opening scene with DEATH BY MONKEYS and FORCE FIELD DOGS and DINOSAURS THAT EAT FORCE FIELD DOGS pretty much owns my goddamn heart. TROLLS!!! <333

-- THE OPENING SHORT, WITH NIGHT AND DAY. WAS THE FUCKING BEST. I kinda want fic for it.

-- re: trailers. What is this owls-on-magical-quest movie?! It looks amazing!

-- FIC #1: Where did those toy soldiers go after they parachuted away? What adventures did they have? What did they see? What did they do? Did they miss home? Did they help each other? Did they tell each other stories? Did they meet other toys along the way? Did they try to be someone else's toys? Why are they only three of them? Wasn't there a bucket of them? Probably the bucket got sold at a yard sale, but these three were lost under the bed or behind the desk or something. And then when they crawled back out after the yard sale drama is over, they find each other again and it is grim relief. Survivor's guilt. Andy is growing up and sometimes being lost is the best way to stick around.

Woody tells them it's good to know you guys are still here and means every word, because Woody is just that kind of guy. But the thing is, the soldiers were legion once. Now they are three. What can they do as three? Some operations are now impossible. They have to adjust their style. They go through the strange process of familiarizing themselves with identity, both each others' and their own. Each other's little quirks. When the bucket went, so did any pretense of anonymity. One of the soldier's arms is creased after being stepped on that one time, so he can't hold rope as well. Another soldier's base is a little wide; he is the slowest runner.

And where are they now? What are they doing? I hope they're doing well, or at least interestingly.

-- And actually all the Toy Story movies imply that there is some underground world of itinerant toys just wandering all over the landscape. FIC #2: Trying to find previous owners, trying to find new owners, trying to find old friends or new friends. Toys with their own agenda and questions that can no longer be answered within the confines of children's bedrooms. In a gas station, you're refilling your tank and don't notice when a teddy bear clambers in through the front window and crawls under the seat. It is trying to get to Newark, and it is running out of time. And then, there are the toys who have given up on children and owners and humans altogether. Some settle down and make a home somewhere. A beanie baby living in the hollow of a tree.

-- FIC #3: After endless cycles of love and abandonment by kids who always grow up, Woody thinks that maybe now he is ready to go to the dump.

-- FIC #4: AU where Andy does take Woody to college after all. Woody makes friends with Andy's bong.

but are we supposed to be impressed that Stefan knows what years the WW2 and the Korean War ended? And when Pearl Harbor was?

Yes. Some people just don't know! Especially WW1. As a history nerd it grates at me. Plus low expectations of their audience.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It was adorably depressing! But maybe I am just too far removed by now. I'm sure I thought I had more important things to remember in high school than history's milestones. My crush's phone number? The burgeoning resentment toward's my parents inflexible curfew?

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I entered HS knowing those dates. Though not Pearl Harbour's date, just the year. Which I suppose is terribly colonial of me ;P

Also VD is utter cheese but what cheese! :D

[identity profile] lexhibition.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Toy Story 1 or 2! Is it worth going to see 3?

[identity profile] vikki.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
If I may offer an opinion? No, actually. You need to watch Toy Story 1 and 2 to appreciate 3. 3 is the best of them, definitely, but it trades very heavily on the first two movies - lots of in-jokes for one thing, and emotional investment, too.

BUT YOU SHOULD WATCH ONE AND TWO AND THEN WATCH THREE BECAUSE THEY ARE GREAT. ♥

[identity profile] lexhibition.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha I AM SUCH A FAILURE AT KIDS MOVIES! I watched Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast' for the first time recently and was all "...that's it, huh?" and the friends I was watching it with told me I had no SOOOOOOOOOUUUUL.
ext_22293: (Default)

[identity profile] anjali-organna.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL forever. I love Beauty and the Beast, it is My Disney Movie, but this just made me laugh and laugh.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I also agree with Vikki, that it helps to see the first 2. The first Toy Story is a straight-up adventure romp and buddy movie, the second Toy Story is cleverer and has a wider world scope... and I found them both enjoyable, but I was also kinda shrug? Toy Story 3 is amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing though.

[identity profile] lexhibition.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently there's a horse in the second one so I am THERE.

[identity profile] vikki.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
And where are they now? What are they doing? I hope they're doing well, or at least interestingly.

DID YOU NOT STAY FOR THE CREDITS? DDDD=

That being said, ILU and we clearly need to squee over this movie together because it was AWESOME. And creepy.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I stayed for the credits! That's like a THING of Toy Story's! But they weren't there ALL the time though. During the entire course of the movie, they were elsewhere! And I didn't get the impression that they went to Sunnyside to stay permanently, but just to visit. Sunnyside is not a good place for toys toddlers can choke on.

[identity profile] marycontraire.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, VAMPIRE DIARIES. IT IS CATCHING, LIKE VD. I recently got one of my male friends hooked on it, and he's been marathoning episodes *in sekrit.* Also, get excited, because while it never stops being absurd and trashy, it does acquire actual plot and character development and just generally gets a lot more enjoyable in the second half of the season.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
This is what I hear! I look forward to it. Especially about Bonnie's witching powers! And this Alaric character sounds cool? Ya I have been going through spoilers lil bit.

[identity profile] marycontraire.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
ALARIC IS SO COOL. AND I SHIP HIM WITH DAMON SO HARD.

[identity profile] lettersandliars.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
BIG BABY SCARED THE EVERLIVING FUCK OUT OF ME. It might have been the eye. Or the fucking exorcist moment on the swingset. IDEK. The handholding at the dump killed me.

I think I want the fic where Andy and Bonnie to have a scheduled play-date and he doesn't realize at first that one day she'll get too old for toys, too, and the day it hits him he starts freaking about about how much it'll suck for them to go through that again, and then freaking out about how he still thinks of his toys as sentient beings, but then Bonnie hits him over the head and is like "Andyyyyyyy, we have to help Jessie and Buzz stop the evil pizza aliens from invading the earth and enslaving humanity with their outerspace t-rex of DOOM." And Woody is just off in the background knowingly.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
OH GOD THE HANDHOLDING AT THE DUMP. I THOUGHT THEY WERE GONNA BITE IT FOR SURE. IF IT WEREN'T A KIDS MOVIE I WOULD'VE BEEN SO SO SURE. But then! Of course! OF COURSE THAT IS HOW THEY ARE SAVED <333333333333

OMG. yessssss. hey you should write that fic.

[identity profile] dimwit90.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The whole time I was watching the night/day short everyone in my group kept yelling "GAY!" Clearly fic needs to happen...

FIC #4: AU where Andy does take Woody to college after all. Woody makes friends with Andy's bong

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL x forever

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
CLEARLY. I'm so glad I'm not the only one!

Seriously, until the end happened, I was convinced I was gonna end up writing Woody/bong fic.

[identity profile] dimwit90.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
CLEARLY YOU SHOULD WRITE WOODY/BONG FIC THE WORLD IS IN DESPERATE NEED FOR IT

*cough*

Did you know that Emily Dickinson wrote a Dean/Alastair poem?

315
He fumbles at your Soul
As Players at the Keys
Before they drop full Music on -
He stuns you by degrees -
Prepares your brittle Nature
For the Ethereal Blow
By fainter Hammers - further heard -
Then nearer - Then so slow
Your Breath has time to straighten -
Your Brain - to bubble Cool -
Deals - One - imperial - Thunderbolt -
That scalps your naked Soul -

When Winds take Forests in their Paws -
The Universe - is still -

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
!!!!

THAT IS VERY DEAN/ALASTAIR. OMG. And so lovely! Hell ya. HELLLL YA. I guess it can be posted to motherlessguns still, since it is still about a Winchester? :D

Prepares your brittle Nature
For the Ethereal Blow

OMG. Do you think Alastair was in on it with Zachariah?

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] zempasuchil.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
You are right, it still is motherlessguns material! my first thought was you though. I think because of that fst you've been talking about. also the demons poetry comm that doesn't exist that I doubted :))

Alastair and Zachariah have plenty in common. For instance, I bet they are both very petty.

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Aww <33! "stuns you by degrees" could very well be the title of this mix now.

I wonder if Castiel had to fight Alastair for Dean, or if they had a discussion about it, or if Alastair had discussed it with Zachariah loooong ago and when he saw Dean carried off by the angel like the fire did Elijah, Alastair fondly thought, "Ah, he was the best of them..."

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] zempasuchil.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if Castiel had to fight Alastair for Dean

DAYUM
I guess before Dean revealed he was the one doing the torturing by the time Cas dragged him out, fandom got in its head this sort of passive "dean is dangling on his hooks and Cas swoops in and frees him!" But was there a battle, a conflict, a one-on-one immortal combat? We do know Alastair is creepily fond of Dean, at least that's pretty much what he went on about the entirety of On the head of a pin.

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Alastair was his mentor! I am totally down for Alastair breaking Dean apart every way he knows how and building him up again from the dust and blood, and wouldn't you get possessive over something you build practically from the ground up? Alastair playing at playing God. I made you, you are mine. Dean'd make a good demon. Alastair is so proud, so delighted with him. And when Alastair tells him good boy, good boy, Dean does feel the familiar flickerflare of pride in him too.

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] zempasuchil.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah! Possessive absolutely - it was the fondness that got me. so proud, so delighted - *shiver*
Dean'd make a good demon.
and now I wanna watch that ep where he dreams of facing his demon self homg.
dude I am pumped for your mix :D

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have a GIF of the last two seconds where demon!Dean snaps and omg I kind of love it a lot?

The Dean/Alastair mix is being really stubborn. It's stuck at 7 songs, and I kinda want to put more on it before putting it out, but maybe this mix is just meant to have seven songs... I mean, the Susan mix only had 8, so.

The more I think about Dean/Alastair, the more I ship them so harrrrrrrd.

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] zempasuchil.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
every time I see a gif or clip of that in a vid something inside me both recoils in horror and shivers in secret awful delight. maybe this is what it's like, liking horror?

A smallish mix is still a good mix. Seven is hardly the smallest I've seen. And if you've been thinking about it for so long, it's unlikely you'll realize you've forgotten a very important part. (and in that case you could always, uh, I dunno, re-release it? post a bonus track?)

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the perfectionist in me is like "but I just downloaded a bunch of new music! maybe one of them has the perfect explication of Dean/Al!" So I just sit on it and sit on it, but maybe it's time to come to terms with the fact that my taste in music prefers to not think about hell.

There is this song "Bullets" by Tunng that I found on a general SPN fanmix that I want to throw on the Dean mix, but I feel iffy about cribbing from other people's mixes. Whaddya think?

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] zempasuchil.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Al? Cannot think of him as Al. That is just weird, you are weird, girl :))

Ooh. If it's from a general SPN fanmix, in your place I wouldn't feel bad about it. not too bad. not if it's the perfect song :)

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
XDD he calls himself Al the way he calls Dean Dean-o when he's telling him he's getting much better at evisceration.

Oh Z, it is perfection, and pretty catchy haha. Songs and poems about guns, alcohol, angels, and roads are like my life right now.

Re: OT except spn/poetry is always on-topic

OMG Vampire Diaries. It was one of those shows that totally crept up on me. Like, haha this show is hilarious, look tandem journal writing! to OMG GIRLS AND BOYS YOU ARE ALL SO AWESOME AND BADASS AND I LOVE IT. I think I love best how the girls' friendships are drawn, and how dysfunctionally functional the Salvatore brothers are and hee. It pleases me greatly. (You can tell I have lots of Feelings About It.)

Hmmm, need to go find some icons now...

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 02:28 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah, I think everyone involved realized how utterly ridiculous it was... Just because the show is called Vampire Diaries does not mean we have to show writing in diaries! There has never been an instance captured on film where writing in a diary does not look at least a little dorky.

[identity profile] nevacaruso.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad you're watching The Vampire Diaries. It is so awesome, and I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of the rest of the season.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I look forward to watching the rest of the season!

Also, I realize that I never got around to fulfilling the Jonny Quest prompt you left when I did the first lines meme some time ago. Sorry about that. I kept on meaning to! But nothing struck me so strong? I love the Jonny Quest stories a lot though. It's just that I was very one-track-mind at the time.

<33

[identity profile] nevacaruso.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been known to take weeks, or even months, to fulfill fic prompts. So don't worry about it. <3

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't believe none of your fic ideas are about Bo Peep. Still traumatized.

And yay, I'm so excited for all the Vampire Diary love on my flist all of a sudden. It's such a good show, I was SHOCKED and elated (and then angry that I had to finally admit to myself I like vampire shows). Especially with Caroline who is the BEST. I love that she sort of breaks the shallow rival stereotype and instead is an actual real person who cares about her friends and is dealing with real insecurity and issues and is sort of shallow, but still sweet and also that Elena cares about her. IT IS FABULOUS. I have more to say, but I don't know what episode you are on. I think it was six, but I have since stopped remembering what your cut text said.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Bo Peep is one of the lost toys striking it out across country. Right now she's clinging to the bumper of a pick-up truck on the way to away-from-Connecticut. A little purple-haired troll told her, "It's not about abandoning them first, you know." And he's right; it's not. This has nothing to do with the children who have owned her, or will ever own her, or will never own her, any of those. It's not about yard sales, and it's not about being forgotten in attics, at all.

I would so love for her to meet another Woody doll en route though, and then it's weird and disorienting and cathartic and sad.

I love that she sort of breaks the shallow rival stereotype and instead is an actual real person who cares about her friends and is dealing with real insecurity and issues and is sort of shallow, but still sweet and also that Elena cares about her.
YESSSSS omg i am excited. It is about time I had a female character like this in my life. Honestly sometimes I wanna shake some sense into her, but sometimes I wanna hug her, and overall I just feel kinda protective and overbearing towards her, and I love why I feel that way.

[identity profile] l-a-r-m.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"AU where Andy does take Woody to college after all. Woody makes friends with Andy's bong."

I just laughed so hard I cried. OMG YES.
