I don't know what the case is in Malaysia, but spoken Indonesian is so, so different from written Indonesian, and far from at all correct. I know this can be said of most languages, but I think the difference is exacerbated by how the mainstream Indonesian media tries to have characters speak Indonesian like it's written. But this goes back to how if you were gonna have the characters speaking authentic vernacular, whose vernacular will you have them speak? So people kinda of end up speaking like Spocktiel.

Sundanese also has those levels of formality, and it makes my head spin sometimes. I wonder if this is at all related to how it's common to refer to yourself in the third person.
