Reccing a couple of webcomics for those of you who like things that are well-drawn, funny, and compelling:

"Lackadaisy" by Tracy Butler is about speakeasy shenanigans in Prohibition-era St. Louis, Missouri, and goddamn, it is a lot of fun. Gangs! Flappers! Jazz bands doubling as heavy-lifters! Politicians of easy virtue! Irritated assassins! Butler has a talent for facial expressions. Warnings for occasional violence, and anthropomorphic cats.

"FreakAngels" by Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield is set in a post-apocalyptic Whitechapel, London. Okay so, there is a group of childhood friends with powers like Jean Grey, right. They're just trying to survive and grow their community without letting people know about their telekinetic/-pathic/whatever secret, but it's the post-apocalypse, and death/mayhem is kinda unavoidable. It's much darker than Lackadaisy [/understatement. Behold the list of warnings: gore, violence, noncon, offscreen cannibalism, full-frontal nudity, and that's only so far. But god, the worldbuilding is great, the action is absorbing, and the friends are such bitches with each other, I <3 it.

And now I talk about Vampire Diaries!

-- Ditto Anna! I loved her in all her incarnations, from her introduction as geeky stalker girl, to ruthless vamp, to someone who just wants to rescue her mother, to her feeeelings for Jeremy (omg, when she found out Jeremy just wanted to vamp out because of VICKY? my heeaarrrt Anna Anna Anna). I loved it all! AND NOW SHE'S DEAD?!?? WHAT EVEN.

-- Ditto Vicky! ngl, the first ship I shipped was Matt/Vicky. STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT. They're like post-Narnia Peter/Susan, but with more drugs and rock music. GUESS CANON KILLED MY SHIP, THOUGH. This is like when I watched 'And Then There Were None' over Fourth of July and all my favorite characters kept dying next, geez.

-- I was kinda underwhelmed by Jeremy at first, but his post-Vicky Jeremy/Anna self grew on me, especially after he got that better haircut. AND NOW. NOW WE'RE GONNA GET VAMPIRE JEREMY? I say bring it on. \o/

-- I love Caroline SO MOTHERFUCKING MUCH. She is selfish, self-absorbed, insecure, sidelined, easy to manipulate, and tries too hard, but she tries not to be a dick, in her own dick way, and she does care for people, and oh, she is even more compelling because of it. Her being all special snowflake and accusing Bonnie and Elena of always leaving her out? Her STUPID SPEECHES TO MATT?? GOD. CAROLINE. YOU DON'T RULE. AT ALL. THAT'S WHY I LOVE YOU.

Ya, I'm pretty sure after those two shows no show will EVER be the same. So Vampire Diaries is good then? I've been tossing Vampire Diaries and TrueBlood back and forth for a while now, cause I love vampires but I'm not entirely sure if I'd like the show itself. And well, I'm pretty bored so watching something sounds entertaining. ♥

It's entertaining enough. It's the anti-Twilight, with interesting female characters who don't needlessly die or succumb. For a while it was the high school vampire SPN AU, and I was expecting to ship brothercest, but... none of those inclinations so far. I tend to be more interested in the side characters and think the love triangle is kinda yawn, but I've been preferring side characters since forever, so.

i am reading lj/dw instead of WRITING a to-do list. bad me. well, at least when i write the list i can cross "read dw/lj" off immediately!

this is why you are my favorite. THIS, SO MUCH. they are just all alone in their big house, you know? and so they move all their stuff into thier parents bedroom, and sleep there together every night, and, like, he knows he's supposed to be the good kid or whatever, but sometimes they get high together and then THINGS HAPPEN? idek.

lol is their house big? They're not well-monied, no? BUT YEAH TO THE OTHER PARTS OF YOUR POST. I dunno, I envision a lot of hurt/comfort where Vicky comes home drunk and tornadoes around the house and Matt tries to calm her down, and Vicky is sometimes like "lol you're adorable" but also sometimes "I DON'T NEED YOUR HELP FUCK OFF", and then there's cuddling in the hallway, sink down against the wall crouching and huddling, what a shitty life they got. Holding each other until they both calm down.

But then there's also when she's laughing and pushing him around, pushing his buttons, "don't be such a tightass, Matt". And they're pushing each other around like they used to do when they were kids. Matt wraps his arms around her and pins her arms to her sides and she's like "OH YOU'RE GONNA GET IT" and they fall over to the floor and wrestle.

yeah, their house isn't very big, but i guess i just figured that when it's just the two of them, and there are people that should be there, empty spaces, it would feel big, you know? AND YES, ALL OF THIS. I WANT ALL OF YOUR IDEAS.

God, TVD. I love it. I love the ladies, I love the dudes. And it's ridiculous, but in a good way! Although my love diminished when they killed off Lexie, and then Pearl and Anna. I really thought Anna was going to make it! Oh show, why do you do these things?

I don't actually know if Tyler is going the Team Jacob route, but all the ominous shots of him framed in the moonlight had me wondering...

OH MY GOD, ANNA. ANNA ANNA ANNA HOW COULD THEY KILL YOU OFF? AND PEARL AND LEXI, I LOVED BOTH OF THEM SO MUCH ALSO. STOP KILLING OFF THE BADASS GIRLSES, SHOW!

Seriously, though. I am so upset about the Anna thing. I even wrote half of a wish-fulfilling AU in which Pearl and Anna didn't die... and then something shiny passed by and I never finished it.

But the show got better, right? By the end, it was so reliably entertaining! Also, DAMON. Also, DAMON AND ALARIC. I ship it really hard. And also want, like, buddy cop AUs, or something. OR MAFIA AUs.

I'm hooked but not enthralled. MAYBE IF I FOUND SOME FIC. Though I am not even much interested in that unless it is a crossover, or about Matt and Vicky growing up.

I loved Anna, too! I loved her awkwardness, her pushiness, and that she was willing to do anything to help her mother. I hope we see more of Anna and Pearl (and also LEXI) in flashbacks. <333

And I didn't 'ship Matt/Vicky when I first started watching, but I'd read it if you wrote it.

Anna clearly knows how to get things done! Good acting on her. And god, I would love to know more about Lexi and Stefan's friendship!

Ok, so this is totally random because I was just stalking your LJ for more glorious SPN fic when I saw your rec for FreakAngels, and I just HAD to say...My boyfriend went to Uni with Paul Duffield and was actually an assitant for his final major project which then got Paul Duffield involved in FreakAngels! How random is that?!
