mix: i have a better idea (summer for the winter)

The following mix is for one-half of [livejournal.com profile] mumblemutter (and whether she's the mumble or the mutter is still unclear), who won me over at [livejournal.com profile] help_pakistan. She asked for a non-fannish "soothing/happy-making/it'll-be-spring-eventually" mix to help get her through the cold months. A, I tried to get the indie pop/rock, Lupe Fiasco-esque hip-hop, and non-English music in. I hope you like them! This is for you, and for Pakistan. Thank you for your generosity, and your general wonderfulness. <33

DOWNLOAD

1. Euphoria, "Maaeri"
We sang a couple of their songs in my a cappella group, but seeing as I don't understand Hindi, I had to learn the songs phonetically. It was fun! I miss singing with a group.

2. Eisley, "Trolleywood"

3. Sufjan Stevens, "Chicago (Adult Contemporary Easy Listening Version)"
So, me/Sufjan is pretty much OTP, and when I saw that The Avalanche has multiple remixes of "Chicago", I did such the happy dance. Fucking love that song. Fucking love this man.

4. Instituto Mexicano del Sonido, "El Microfono"

5. Elizabeth & The Catapult, "Momma's Boy"

6. Pete Bernhard, "Mint Condition"
Thank you, Dafna, for introducing me to this guy.

7. Up Dharma Down, "Taya"
One of the best bands to come out of the Manila scene. I saw them live and oh my gosh, the girl sounds 10x better live, and she already sounds really ossum to begin with.

8. Say Hi To Your Mom, "Prefers Unhappy Endings"

9. A Tribe Called Quest, "Check the Rhime"
I went down the Cape with my boyfriend and his family for a week, and every time me and the BF went out, we I put this song on repeat. YOU ON POINT, FIFE? All the time, Tip. <333

10. Amadou & Mariam, "M'bife"
The first time I heard of them was when I saw the music video for "Senegal Fast Food". SONGS BY MANU CHAO ABOUT IMMIGRATION WOES? All over it.

11. Jellyfish, "Russian Hill"
The guy I had a crush on in high school liked these guys and turned me onto them. Guy I had a crush on had good taste. They are fucking whimsical.

12. G. Love & Special Sauce, "Do It For Free"

13. J. Ralph, "Mi Ricordo"

14. Oasis, "Songbird"

15. Pinback, "Good to Sea"

16. Vanessa Paradis, "Dans Mon Cafe"
'Bliss' was an impulse buy after I saw the video for "Commando". I didn't even know she was J. Depp's lady until I read the liner notes.

17. Jude, "Out of L.A."
Mr. Christodal, you should be bigger than you are. Please write more tongue-in-cheek songs about creepy things.

18. Mojave 3, "Bill Oddity"

19. Better Than Ezra, "Je Ne M'En Souviens Pas"
'How Does Your Garden Grow?' was an amazing album, guys. I thiiiink I got into them because "One More Murder" was on the "Fight the Future" movie soundtrack.

20. Andrew Bird, "Bein' Green"
Probably my favorite rendition of the song.

Amadou and Mariam! How have I not heard their stuff before! I am super desirous of having a mix that is for happymaking and looking forward to spring :D Also, how can i not dl something with a "fucking whimsical" group in it? :DDD yaaaay i love your music taste, girl! this looks 100% lovely!

Thank you! And Amadou and Mariam are so up your alley. Manu Chao produced one of their albums, and then reduxed a few of their songs in his Siberie album. Amadou and Mariam also have THE CUTEST GETTING-TOGETHER STORY EVER. So, they met at Mali's Institute for the Blind, right? And then they started playing music together. And then THEY FELL IN LOVE. AND THEN THEY GOT MARRIED. AND THEY'RE STILL PLAYING MUSIC AND NOW THEY'RE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC STARS OF AWESOME <3333 D'AWWWW

Jellyfish is great. They have this song called "Sabrina, Paste, and Plato" which is about Claire when she was very very young and Castiel has only just started taking her on adventures.

I remember my friend telling me about them and their adorable love and fame story when she lent me Manu Chao discs! And apparently they came and performed here at some point and she saw them?? Maybe I dreamed that part. But yeah, him and his mixing and reduxing, man it's really fun.

:DDD plato, hee. I am totally gonna look that one up. omg claire <3

snagging this! I am woefully uneducated about a lot of popular music, so besides Sufjan Stevens and Andrew Bird I recognize none of the others, but yay for new music to listen to! It'll be good to put on some nice soothing music while RL continues to pile work on me pfffft

:D

Same. I get most of my music from the internet these days, so I'm not sure which are actually popular now. Well, I guess A Tribe Called Quest, Oasis, Jellyfish, and Better Than Ezra are so last decade it hurts. Man, I miss the nineties.

Hope you enjoy!

PS At the end of El Microfono, it starts "Chilango Banda" by Cafe Tacuba! Do you know that song? That song is FUN. Don't ask me what it says, it's all crazy Mexico City slang, but the video's pretty indicative :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xpEiKmX1U4

okay wait I do have notes on what it says. here's the first part:

Ya chole chango chilango
(Enough already, guy [from mexico city])
que chafa chamba te chutas
(what a shitty job you have)
no checa andar de tacuche
(why would you walk around in that jacket)
y chale con la charola
(and fuck with the police)

Roughly.
