'Beginning's End' - SPN fanmix - Dean

[livejournal.com profile] sharp_teeth is back! Go play around in this most splendid Multifandom Horror Comment Meme for Writers and Artists. Twas this meme that helped spawn the longest fic I ever (co-)wrote to date, so I've a soft spot for it. There are so many fantastic prompts already, and do yourself a favor, guys, and check it out.

And here is another mix. A tip of the hat to [livejournal.com profile] dafnap, who I got two of the songs from and also tracked down the Dean picture. Here are some songs about S1-3!Dean and the things he saw en route to the apocalypse.

download .ZIP file

01. pete bernhard, "straight line"

if my father was an earthquake now,
then my mother was a hurricane
me, i got my hands full
walking in a straight line, remembering my own name
i was born when the trees around my home
bled fire out into the arms of the sky
the world snapped beneath your feet
and everything that was alive had died

02. the devil makes three, "graveyard"

it starts off just the whiskey and wine
some miles of travel and some real good times
but it ends in a dark corridor
where there ain't no windows and there ain't no doors

03. tom waits, "eggs and sausage (in a cadillac with susan michelson)"

and now the register rings
and now the waitress sings
the classified section offered no direction
it's a cold caffeine in a nicotine cloud
now the touch of your fingers
lingers burning in my memory

04. elvis costello, "complicated shadows"

you think you're like iron and steel
but iron and steel will bend and break
in those complicated shadows
sometimes justice you will find
is just dumb, not colorblind
and your poor shattered mind can't take it all in

05. midnight masses, "there goes our man"

got so much to say to you, father
yesterday just wasn't the time
as you lay there in your deathbed
sometimes i feel i'm lying in mine

06. tunng, "bullets"

we're catching bullets
with our heads and hearts and all
the darkest parts of us
it's strange to find such light
in such endless night

07. sage francis, "sea lion"

i'm going city to city, i'm already lost
tell the boss who is new in town
i'll ride this horse 'til it it bucks me off
and i'm forced to shoot it down
i'll take him out for some gasoline
trade this cow for some magic beans
gonna make mom proud of the deals that i made
'cause i'm just a modern day johnny appleseed

08. ben harper & the blind boys of alabama, "well, well, well"

dig a hole in the ground straight down to Hell
'til there ain't no more water in the well, well, well
when you're down on your knees with nothing left to sell
try diggin' a little deeper in the well, well, well

09. bobby gibbs, "timepiece"

i no longer ask "why me?"
because it's easy to see that the things
that i've done in my past will ensure that
my atonement will be a long and arduous journey

10. rjd2, "two more dead"

(instrumental, for the most part)

:( I want ALLLLL the fics prompted in sharp_teeth. I keep refreshing in flat view. I should be writing up a prospectus. :( :( :(

PRETTY OMG. *___* How did you get that soft-lit flare effect in the background?

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
I should've been doing other things when I was leaving prompts all over sharp-teeth too, haha.

Thanks, I used multiple layers of varying transparencies, with only the bottom-most layer at full opacity. Then I use the hell out of the Smudge tool.

That Tunng song is one of my favorites, holy crap. I'd never heard of Midnight Masses before, but this song is haunting, love the military drums (and how much of a sucker am I for mixes that end on instrumentals? SO MUCH OF ONE. /fan)

ALSO THE ART. With the painterly swirls and phoenix-y color palette (where is Dean as Dark Phoenix fic, I ask?) and arm porn. /double plus fan

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
:DDD

That is actually the only Tunng song I know. Midnight Masses are beautiful and epic, and sing about Supernatural ALL THE TIME. All the time. Can I just--

rapture ready, i gazed at the gun
i didn't lose the signal not even once
i looked over my shoulder
an angelic sniper was aiming at me for killing everyone
it was night and it was day
the demons took my body away
i said hold on i used to be a preacher's son

i went to the altar to see my brother
tell him it's all for love that he had won
it was day and it was night
i took a walk with the angel of light
he said hold on do you know whose side i'm on

from Preacher's Son/Desperate Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgcxY8WpUBY).

And here's their song about Cas:

heaven: i got the key but there's no door
the drugs don't work anymore
it's the weight, it's my sin
i know i don't belong in heaven
i don't walk like a saint
as i walk through the gates

which is actually available for download (http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vd3d3Lm9uZXNldmVuc2V2ZW5zaXguY29tL2dyYWIvTWlkbmlnaHRNYXNzZXMtSGVhdmVuLm1wMw==) on their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/midnightmassesandtheendofdays).

While the boys might've started out with Kansas's "Carry On My Wayward Son", I think right now they're with its unofficial reprise, Midnight Masses "Walk on Water" (http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vdGhlZmFkZXIuY2FjaGVmbHkubmV0L01NLVdhbGtPbldhdGVyLm1wMw==):

carry on, walk on water
carry on, for your daughter, for your son
the damage is done
its time had come
there's nothing wrong with moving on
so carry on

In short oh god they need to record a full album already oh man.

I don't know any of these songs but just from the lyrics you posted this seems to be a wonderful and very fitting mix for Dean :)

<3 this so much! Great fanmix, and also very touching, as well :)

Saving with many thanks.

Clearly I listen to music EXTREMELY SLOWLY, but omg lass this mix! I had tucked it away for when I could give myself a new mix to listen to as a whole, and dslksdf;ldsfalk I love it and I have been listening to it nonstop for the last week. I especially can't stop listening to Straight Line, Sea lion, Bullets, and Two More Dead. all the spoken word in here! and Timepiece, dude the words for that are really perfect for both Sam and Dean, but the voice of it, the resignation part, is so so so Dean. dsfldsflkds SO PERFECT, all of this, omg.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-11-21 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
:DDDDDD

That makes me really happy. Thank you so much! Dafna was the first who pointed out "Straight Line" for a Dean song, and yes, she is so right. I'M THRILLED YOU LIKE 'TIMEPIECE'. Bobby Gibbs is a poet from Worcester, and a friend of mine used to I think volunteer at a shelter for runaways where Gibbs worked. He'd do like impromptu recitations there sometimes. :D

I wish I had more recorded spoken word to put on fanmixes.
