I think it all ties in to Jimmy's need to be special. Well, not ~need maybe, but even in canon when Castiel told him he was chosen, he was so alight with it, so excited, so ready to walk out for what is ~right and great. The powers kind of replace vesselhood in this 'verse. He confuses duty and pride.
