we need to talk about sam/kevin
I signed up for
deancas_xmas. You should too! Oct 31 is the last day to sign up, so hop to.
For now, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN. Apologies if you've seen this before. I'm reposting for purposes of archival and possible further ramblings. Don't get me wrong, I love the Kevin we have now, and my heart shatters rainbowly at how badass being on his own has forced him to become, but Sam and Kevin on the run together still gives me a case of the feels. Sam channeling his brother, trying to keep Kevin safe and keep Kevin’s spirits up, teach him things, tell him things aren’t so bad as they run out of safe places. Teaching Kevin to shoot guns, flashing back to ghoul!Adam except Kevin is a real boy who really does need him. And Sam thinks this must’ve been how Dean felt all those years. The first time Kevin hits the cans in a row off the fenceposts, Sam is so proud.
Sam channeling his father - stop thinking about Princeton, you’re not going to Princeton, this is your life now, this is what’s real. It’s not like Sam doesn’t hear his own words and or recognize the frustration on Kevin’s face, but what else can he do? What can anyone do? They’re holed up in Rufus’s warded cabin and he panics when he can’t find Kevin anywhere. Kevin is outside enjoying the sun and Sam LOSES HIS SHIT, all like I TOLD YOU NOT TO LEAVE THE HOUSE. WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU? YOU KNOW WHAT’S AFTER US. And Kevin is stunned at the tirade and Sam feels bad, tries to rein himself in, tries to apologize. Later when he turns on his laptop, he sees Princeton University’s website on his browser history. He knows Kevin is in the next room just eating a sandwich and watching TV, but Sam gets up to check anyway.
“…What?” Kevin says, and Sam says, “Nothing,” and considers going into town tonight, just the two of them, grab some food from that diner Kevin likes. But in the end practicality wins out. They stay in. Sam asks how Kevin’s Latin is going. This at least is familiar territory. That must’ve been how Dad excused it too.
