THIS IS NOT REALLY AN EPISODE REACTION, IT IS MOSTLY MY RAMBLINGS ABOUT FEATHERS. I actually have ramblings also about the Most Noble and Ancient House of Winchester and the AU where Sam and Dean live a Malfoy kind of life, but I ran out of time, so have this for now.

ANGEL FEATHERS IN THE TRUNK. WHY ARE THEY THERE? HOW DID THEY GET THERE?

1. Did Cas molt in season 5 when he was falling? You can't see his wings, but when the feathers fall off his wings, you can see the feathers. The Winchesters start seeing them in the motel rooms after Cas makes an appearance.

- The Winchesters only have a few feathers though. It's noticeable when Henry takes one. How many do they have?! FIVE? TWO? One for each brother. WHY DID CAS GIVE THEM HIS FEATHERS? This is assuming that these are Cas's feathers. Them being other angels' feathers are a whole different set of fics.

2. Human eyes can't see them, but when angels die and leave the black wingmarks on the ground, some of the wings aren't burnt. The feathers belong to: Uriel, Balthazar, Rachel. If Cas could've kept one of Anna's feathers, he would have.

3. Dean found the feathers stuck to the inside of Castiel's coat when it washed up on the banks of the reservoir. He laid them out to dry on the bathroom counter. There's nothing divine about them. These could be the feathers of a swan, an egret, an osprey. He didn't even think angels had actual feathers. He always assumed the word 'wings' is just an approximation. It's like when angels say 'saved', but they mean is 'ours'.

4. Dean absently running his fingers through Cas's wings.

5. Dean absently running his fingers through Cas's wings, and it's made of God's breath and the first light, and then Dean wakes up and he's holding feathers in his hand.

- Say it's a bunch of feathers, say it's like... 15 feathers. Dean counting each one.

6. DO THE WINCHESTERS DO A LOT OF SPELLS INVOLVING ANGEL FEATHERS? IS THAT WHY THEY HAVE IT? A particularly potent kind of angel summoning maybe? Is it them being like, "Cas, we need a favor," or Cas being like, "You'll need this," and he reaches into the ether to his wings.

- To the human eye, these look like a normal bird feather, but to those who have the sight, they can see the trails of grace, like strands of cobweb hanging from it, the steady soft glow.

7. A substitute for prayer, a substitute for memory, a substitute for touch, a totem of grief, an expression of love, brotherhood, solidarity. A promise. He'll come back and make it up to you.

8. It's the first time they have sex and Dean sees the angel within rising to the surface of its vessel, unfurling from its constraints. It flickers like an illusion. It almost hurts to see, but mostly it's terrifying and beautiful. Light straining against Cas's skin. Monster-shaped shadows trailing him like afterimages - the lion, the ox, the endless burning wheel. The painful resonance of frequencies not meant for human ears when he says Dean's name. The more Castiel loses himself in the sensation, the less control he has over his division of self. He becomes one, the unseen parts of the angel breaking through to the human world. Curves of grace arc from Castiel's back, and Dean reaches out to touch them. To his surprise, they are tangible, smooth to the touch.

9. Dean holding on to Cas's wings when he flies them somewhere.

10. They are from other angels, not from Cas. There are specialists who harvest angels for their parts - the feathers, the grace, the bones, etc. YOU GOTTA USE ALL THE PARTS OF THE ANGEL.

11. Cas teaching Dean how to do angel-based spells. This is my body and this is my blood, my flight, my sight, this is crushed malachite mixed into the blood, this is an angel feather infused in holy water, this is the Enochian word for 'light', the word for 'vanquish'.

12. Meg has one of Cas's feathers tucket into her back pocket.

12a. So does Claire.

12b. "Where did these come from?" Daphne wonders, sweeping up the feathers.

- Speaking of which, the Men of Letters had MAD FEATHERS YO. They had a JAR FULL OF FEATHERS. WHERE DID THEY GET ALL THOSE FEATHERS?

i. They have an angel trapped in holy fire in the basement and harvest it as needed.
ii. They have an agreement with a special angel friend/business associate who brings them what they need.
iii. They riddled with an angel and won, and the prize was one of its wings.
iv. These feathers are very old, passed on down from Biblical times. Not many spells call for angel feathers, as they are very powerful.
v. Someone quested very hard to get that jar of feathers and the tale is recorded and embellished upon in Men of Letters lore.

THIS IS NOT EVEN EVERYTHING I WANT TO SAY ABOUT FEATHERS, I HAVE A LOT MORE TO SAY ABOUT FEATHERS, I AM JUST SO LIKE FJKDLSJFLKSDJFKLSD PLEASE HOLD ME AND SING TO ME ABOUT FEATHERS
