the empty world sings
Narnia. Pre-Peter/Lucy, dubiously gen. PG. Written for the prompt 'trapped in a cabin in the mountains' during dinner, except I changed 'cabin' to 'some caves'. Golden Age fic. 270 words.
The winter reminds them of the first winter, those many years ago, and they take turns distracting each other from memories.
+
Peter stares out into the snow and does not look up when he feels Lucy's hand on his shoulder. "They'll find us soon," he says. "Ed knows these northern mountains well, after the campaign against the giants."
"And he is not afraid of the winter," adds Lucy.
"No," Peter murmurs as she slides her arms around his waist. "He is not."
+
"Aren't you cold, Lu?"
She doesn't answer. There is something in her eyes and her silence that unsettles him, but he can't quite say what or why. Lucy just holds out her hand, and he takes it, and she pulls Peter to her and she is warm, so warm.
+
"We are running low on food," Lucy points out.
"We'll toss a coin," says Peter, "and the loser gives up a leg for a stew."
She laughs. "Oh, but we are both horrible cooks."
There are many kinds of hunger, and eventually they feel each one of them.
+
Lucy begins, "Do you think Aslan will--"
"No," Peter replies flatly.
They do not mention Aslan again.
+
They huddle together for warmth, but can't quite stop shivering anymore. Lucy holds her brother's hands in her own and breathes on them, but they remain cold and his fingers taste like snow.
"I hope Ed comes soon," Lucy whispers.
Peter kisses the top of her head, and Lucy tugs him down to kiss the corner of his mouth, and for a long time they say nothing more.
