Merlin: to war

For [livejournal.com profile] allothi, who gave me the following prompt: Morgana convinces Uther that he is at war with Wales. And has been for years. And needs to give her powers to raise up and train a large army. For his war. *cough*

to war

Arthur gets a hair-raising sensation at the back of his neck every time he walks by Morgana training the troops.

"Father," he says, the next time they have a moment alone. "Are you quite sure the war with Wales is a good idea?"

"It was never a good idea, Arthur," Uther intones, "and that is why we must end it."

Arthur worries.

Arthur tries to catch her in the corridors and demand explanations, but she is always hurrying off: she has tacticians to glower at, spies to dispatch, armor and weaponry to design under Gwen's tutelage.

"This is madness!" he calls after her.

Morgana glances at him over her shoulder, and says, "War is madness, Arthur."

"Father, I must insist--"

"I trust Morgana. We'll say no more of it."

"There has to be another way," Arthur insists, and hates the tinge of desperation in his voice. Another way for what? For Wales? For Camelot? He isn't sure anymore.

The firelight reflects off her sword as she polishes it, and Morgana says, "There is no other way."

As her army spar with each other, Arthur walks alongside his almost sister, watching their progress, and watching her. "When will you attack?" he asks.

Morgana isn't looking at him. He follows the line of her gaze, and sees Uther watching them from a balcony. The king waves, and his children wave back.

"Soon," Morgana says, not taking her eyes off Uther. "We attack soon."
