Like A Secret
Harry Potter. Harry/Ron. PG13.
'Maybe Ron will wake up smiling and won't know why.'
Harry says 'I love you' to Ron everyday but Ron doesn't know this. Harry mouths it against Ron's skin, and when they kiss Harry whispers it into his mouth but Ron never notices because apparently he's the kind of person who always kinds of hyperventilates during kisses. Ron's doing his gasping and moaning bit and Harry slips in the words between exhales, to rest on Ron's tongue for the rest of the night. Maybe Ron will wake up smiling and won't know why. Sometimes Harry mouths it to the air when Ron's not looking or asleep, and the words will hover over him, invisible but tangible.
Harry can remember every word from the conversation where they first said 'I love you'. Harry said something like, "I've always wondered if I loved you, because, I mean, it's the kind of thing you'd wonder about if you like someone this much." Ron said, "Yeah." Then Harry said it, those three words, fearlessly and without shame because he knew Ron felt the same. Sure enough, Ron said, "I love you," and although Harry knew it all along, he felt like a star about to explode because it was too much and too good to be true. It was so good.
They've only said it that one time. In the wrong hands and with the wrong intent, these words are cliches. They need proper handling, and Harry's not sure if he can provide that for something this important. It's so important that he can't keep them to himself and at the same time it doesn't need to be said because Ron already knows anyway, and Harry doesn't want to become like one of those idiots that says 'I love you' every three minutes.
Harry fears saying it and not meaning it. Ghosting Ron with the words seems to be a viable alternative. Ron's skin is soft and pliant, because for all the facades of strength and maturity that he may put on, he's still a boy and young and stupid. That's okay because Harry is, too. The world is insane, but Ron's insanity appears to be on a wavelength similar to Harry's, and he supposes that's all he can ask for. Harry whispers 'I love you' over and over like a secret, and Ron holds him closer and kisses him, and they are happy.

This is fluffy in the extreme, but somehow it seems realistic and organic to the characters. And it made me really happy, too. Wonderful.

Damn you for catching me at a supremely hormonal moment!
And for writing something so small and lovely!
he felt like a star about to explode because it was too much and too good to be true
*dies a little bit*

Brilliant.
Harry whispers 'I love you' over and over like a secret, and Ron holds him closer and kisses him, and they are happy.
Argh! *melts and hugs self* Damn you for exposing my soft side!
You still da bestest, sweetie!
*huge transatlantic hug*
