Fuck you, world.

PISSED OFF. At my my on-campus housing not working out. It's going to be a LITTLE bit difficult writing a thesis when you live in the gutter, THANKS. How do I begin to search for apartments in New York when I am ON ANOTHER CONTINENT. I AM ALSO PISSED OFF AT MY FLU. Though, I am amused at the feverish half-awake dreams it gives me. "must text my mother that I'll meet her soon" + "Naaaaarrrrrrniajsfsjakfnrfs" = "must text Lucy to stop Edmund from killing too many people, the throne is more secure than he thinks". Well, the flu got me sleeping at a decent hour, at least. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN I LIKE YOU, FLU.

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] narnia_secret is kind of hilarious! This one kind of sums Narnia up for me. Aha, so I am not the only one intrigued by this ship.

MY SECRETS
1. I think Anna Popplewell is rather plain-looking, and has bad taste in dresses.
2. I kind of love this Binbons nickname.

That is all the news that's fit to print. ARGH.

Hehe I don't mind :). Well, I'm in Manila right now and I'm going in approximately a month's time, for grad school. You are of the area, right? I think? WHERE THE HOUSING AT.

housing in new york is tricky for sure...do you know people here who can help you out? like looking at places for you and stuff? or maybe someone to crash with when you first get here while you do the apt search in person?

craigslist is your best bet. most people i know avoid brokers, figuring they might be moving after a year or two anyway. it's actually not too hard to find housing if you have enough money; it's the compromise between where you want to live and what you can afford that's the painful part. i assume you've been doing your own research and such, so i don't want to tell you things you already know, but if you have questions i'll try and answer!

I applied to International House, as it seems like an awesome place. Have you heard of it? If all goes well I should hear back from them in a couple weeks. I am on the waitlist for on-campus housing, but there is no guarantee there. I guess I won't mind living far from the area... I mean, the subway gets you everywhere, right? Do you have a long commute?

If neither of those work out, then yeah I think I will do that last thing you said. I do know some people here who might offer me a couch or something.

i have heard of international house, but i don't know anyone who lives/lived there. what school will you be attending?

depending on price, i would say pick an area of the city you think you'd like living in, and then consider the length of the commute. right now i'm living in williamsburg (first stop into brooklyn on the L), which is good socially; all my friends live in the east village/lower east side (an easy jump from here), in williamsburg as well, or further east of me in brooklyn.

one summer i lived up by columbia, but i worked at nyu, which was really inconvenient. i would end up going downtown for work, going back up after work, then having to go back down to hang out with friends (and no one wanted to visit me because there's nothing to do on the upper west side). so i guess think about what you like doing, and try to live near those things. or if you don't care about going out as much, then maybe living as close as possible to campus is a better option.

this fall i'll be attending hunter college (68 st & lexington), which is about a 40-minute trip door to door.

the subway and buses in manhattan will definitely get you anywhere you need to go; if you end up living further away in the outer boroughs, they can be less reliable and of course your commute will be significantly longer. but you'll find much better places for much cheaper.

haha, i get so excited when people talk about moving here, it reminds me how i felt in the beginning. yay life changes!

Columbia. I think I am fine with living a little further away from the center of action, as I'm not anticipating (or maybe letting?) post-grad studies give me that bustling of a social life. But after spending my undergrad in the armpit of New England, I so am looking forward to living in a big city again! My motto of going there has been like, "New York!: it has things to do and public transport. Whee!" LIFE CHANGES INDEED XD. But I don't know that much about New York's neighborhoods. I wish I had a better sense of the relationship between the commute time and distance. I CANNOT WAIT.
