five things: WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MADE

1. Two lovely erasures have already been posted to [livejournal.com profile] erasureathon! And joy of joys, they're erasures of my fic! [livejournal.com profile] sgrio made the specific into the communal in parádeisos, an erasure of my Narnia fic about movieverse!Glozelle, and rendered the cracked out intimate in ménage à trois, which is an erasure of my Leverage fic about the time Parker got turned into a ceramic cat. idk, it was a [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic prompt okay.

2. Okay, I give in. I have a Twitter. That's right, SITERLAS, because Psych is giving me a complex apparently. All you tweeters, put your lights on.

3. [livejournal.com profile] isurrendered is having an episode-reaction post party for all our nonexistent shows. It's gonna be a weekly thing. I just... I cannot love this comm more if I tried. If real reactions to fake episodes, then what next? Reviews of our fake shows? Drinking games for our fake episodes? Fandom Wank posts of our fake shows' fandoms?

4. I'm getting my friend hooked on the demon blood, so for Valentine's Day we drank wine and watched Supernatural, now known to us as, "THE DEAN SHOW and sam i guess". Then we got distracted for twenty years by this picture. (STOP IT, ACKLES, I NEED MY BRAIN TO DO THINGS.) I cannot wait to ruin her life with fic.

5. Today was extremely bewildering! Every time something terrible and world-ending happened (which today was surprisingly often! courstesy of immigration bureaucracy), there was an equally happy and helpful solution that solved the problem! Talk about mood whiplash. This happened all day! AWFUL NEWS, AWESOME NEWS, AWFUL NEWS, AWESOME NEWS, aaaahhhhh. I'm not out of the woods yet, but forgive me if I'm just gonna spend the rest of the night eating Sour Patch Kids and orange-infused dark chocolate.

2. following you! DO NOT BE ALARMED, I'm only a dork 86% of the time.

3. I need to do that, like now. I got a prompt a week ago and I've just been fluctuating from homework overload to laziness.

5. orange-infused dark chocolate?! have you ever had one of these?

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
2. That's less than me!

5. YES. My first orange-infused chocolate! Not as good as the one I'm eating now though! \o/

FOLLOWING YOU ON TWITTERRR

"THE DEAN SHOW and sam i guess".

Hahaha A+

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Likewise! I am still in 'apprehensive learning' stage. Trending? #? Someday I will be hep to this lingo. Someday.

What is weird and funny is going back to S1 and hearing how much higher Dean's voice used to be! wtf. Apparently a Batman-off has been declared?

3. WHAT IS THIS [livejournal.com profile] isurrendered? IS THIS LIKE, A MEME GONE WILD?

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
IT IS A MEME GONE SUPERNOVA. It's actually up your alley, 'cos the more multimedia you go, the better. It started with this:

1. Comment to this post with "I surrender!" and I'll assign you the basis of some TV show idea. (Science fiction show, medical drama, criminal procedure, etc...)
2. Create a cast of characters, including the actors who'd play them
3. Add in any actor photos, character bios and show synopsis that you want.
4. Post to your own journal.

and then it consumed EVERYONE and the rest is history. History is still happening.

[identity profile] lovestories.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
...GODDAMMIT THAT SOUNDS SO EPIC. OHMYGOD.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW YOU HAVEN'T SURRENDERED BUT YOU SHOULD DO ONE ABOUT A NOMADIC BAND OF SUPERNATURAL CREATURES WHO FIGHT CRIME.

Seriously, we've had soundtracks and fanfics posted to the comm already, come on dude.

OKAY IDGET IT. DEAN IS SEXIST, RUDE AND BORDERLINE XENOPHOBIC. WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE HIM SO MUCH AND THEN THEY'RE LIKE "...oh also sam is there." is it entirely because jensen cries so pretty?
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] mumblemutter.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
I THINK THAT IS WHY I WANT TO SHOOT HIM THEN - MANPAIN+ME=ANATHEMA. I HAVE A TENDENCY TO WANT TO STAB THEM IN THE FACE UNTIL THEY CRY.

...that's mean. dean is too pretty to be stabbed in the face. perhaps i will just mock him until he does so. HE CRIES SO PRETTY.

i had no idea that i should read the text as dean being closeted! THAT IS FASCINATING...should i rewatch every episode to see what i have been missing? because really i've always only been there for the gore, and the brothers emoing are like, in the way of shit getting torn up.

[identity profile] mumblemutter.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
my relationship with supernatural is old and bitter and spans five years of watching the show and ignoring the fandom entirely, until now. i feel i have missed out of years of fannish/fandom/fanon stuff that i should know about re: dean, and kripke, and sam's unpopularity. i'm re-watching season four now though, for uh, research. of a kind. possibly reading dean as closeted makes for a far more pleasant watching experience. OMG DEAN.

Well, I mean, you can read the text any old way you want to! But TPTB seem to mistake fanservice for character development, which has interesting implications for Deano.

i feel that is true for like, many shows, not just supernatural. oh, TPTB. what do we do with you?

Ahaha, I am not pretending to like this show for deep and politic reasons. The fictional characters that hit my buttons aren't usually the people I would be friends with IRL.

[identity profile] mumblemutter.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha i would totally hang out with dean IRL. i'd make fun of him whenever he cried and we'd mock people who eat vegetables and ghandi and also gay people. it would be choice. \o/

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I would especially mock the people who eat vegetables. I hear they have no souls?

SERIOUSLY ACKLES, TONE IT DOWN. I need to function!

Hee, thanks <3. Going to school outside your own country is such a pain sometimes. Granted, I know no other way, I haven't gone to school in my own country since I was 5.

THE DEAN SHOW and sam i guess. Haha, this is so accurate. I love that you are just now going through the exact same thought process I went through when SPN started when I was in 11th grade. Have you seen the (now ancient) many faces picspams yet? Dean & Sam.

[identity profile] marycontraire.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
P.S. Now I crave Sour Patch Kids. Thanks for that gift.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You are the second long-term SPN watcher to say that to me! This show inspires ~FEELINGS~ in me okay, but I guess everyone's already bought the t-shirt! Sometimes I roll through LJ looking for episode reaction posts and sometimes it's like -- especially with the older fans (not in age) -- it's like reading missives from Martians 'cos are we watching the same show? I know a lot of ppl think SPN has gone off the rails with the apocalypse stuff, but the derailment is kinda why I'm here. I'm happy with my low expectations and as long as they continue to mistake fanservice for character development, I'll continue to be happy.

[identity profile] marycontraire.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
as long as they continue to mistake fanservice for character development, I'll continue to be happy. LOL, ain't that the truth. I am definitely one of those who thinks the show has gone completely off the rails-- I think it was a really solid, intelligent show for the first two seasons, and then season three was really uneven-- that was also the strike year, so they never had a change to tie up some of their loose ends. I continue to enjoy it despite the whole jumping the shark thing, because crack is fun too! I love Castiel (particularly on drugs) and Chuck-the-Prophet and all the meta insanity. But yeah, it was definitely more solid before. Now it's just... fun and crazy. I definitely notice it in my rare forays into fandom, as well. You used to get people making SRS BSNS posts about, like, what Show was trying to say about ideals of masculinity in America, and family values. Now it's all... pictures of Misha pouring yogurt on his face. But I enjoy both of these things, so.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
lol that quote is courtesy of Sgrio. Ya man, S4 and S5 are much with the awesome side characters, because omg Chuck! AND BECKY. Fandom seems to hate on Becky and feel like she's the show's personal attack on fandom, but I looooove her and think she's hilarious. Because fandom is hilarious, guys! I hope she does something awesome and important. lol Cas on drugs, 5x04 breaks my heart (and makes me glee!) all the damn tiiiiiime, omg, def one of my favorites. CAS WAS GONNA RAISE YOU FROM PERDITION BUT THEN HE GOT HIGH. Also he makes like, the best entrances.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I just looked through the facespams hahaha that is some epic shit. I want a Cas facespam now.

[identity profile] mrinalinee.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This TV show meme is so awesome, but I'm having so much trouble because I keep wanting to cast people on the sole basis that I enjoy their faces, and that is kind of ridiculous; also I am not huge on the free time right now. WHATEVER.

Ahaha, I think, in fairness, the writers tend to think it is the DEAN SHOW and also sam I guess, which is so weird for me because S1 and 2, I sort of - overidentified with Sam while at the same time, not really liking him very much? But then he started becoming really bugfuck, and I enjoyed his character a lot more; and Dean became a lot more bugfuck too, but it was a lot less interesting to me. I think this is because the writers tend to equate emoporn with character development! I love me some emoporn, but I would maybe like some actual character development, idk. Apparently the more I identify with a character the less I like them? I'd totally hang out with Dean irl, but as long as we could stfu about our self-worth issues and skip right to drinking whiskey and dorkgasming over muscle cars and internal combustion engines and shitty horror movies, is what I'm saying. I get enough of people's anxieties manifesting themselves in gendered/heterosexist ways and playing on my anxieties in actual rl, tyvm. And that is my TMI about being over-invested in TV shows for the day! I want some SPN icons, goddamnit.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
!!! That is how I feel about Sam! All things considered, I should be identifying with him in the early seasons, but I am less interested in his stories. I have read exactly one Sam-centric genfic. IRL I'd hang out with him, and Dean would eventually grate on my nerves (what was the episode where he was like "I love being used for sex"? yeah we can just do that), but in fictionland it's opposites day everyday. I'm fine with Dean's emo, I just wish I understood it more. The other characters keep saying he's broken all the time, but idk he doesn't seem anymore broken than any of the other characters. Sam seems the more broken of the two. But then again I was reading someone's post about how she has PTSD and relates to Dean's PTSD, so idk.

[identity profile] mrinalinee.livejournal.com 2010-02-17 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
The other characters keep saying he's broken all the time, but idk he doesn't seem anymore broken than any of the other characters.

Hmm, I never really considered this, but wow yeah I guess you're right? My theory is this: Dean sort of internalizes everything, like, not just that he represses, which he does, but even when he acknowledges that he has a lot of anger at John, he turns directs the anger towards himself because he thinks the things that are fundamental to himself are the things that are fundamental to his anger at John. Fundamental is a fun word to say, idk. But I mean, it's easy for anyone to see how fucked up that is, but you can't really convince someone else that they're worth anything; and even if you realize that you hate yourself kind of a lot, you can't really convince yourself to stop, especially if you think feelings are for girls. But Sam is sort of the inverse? He's a lot more openly emotional and shit, but he also externalizes all his anger; he blames John and demon's blood and whatever, and whether or not he believes it, Dean believes it because he doesn't want to acknowledge that Sam might be as deep-down fucked up as he is. But it's also like, if you blame all your cray-cray on external things, it begins to look a lot like trying to absolve yourself of responsibility, and that's not a kind of fucked up that it's easy to be sympathetic towards. And I guess the things that make them sort of tragic is similarly reciprocal? Like, Dean sort of knows exactly what he wants but isn't willing to believe that he deserves it, and Sam doesn't really know what the fuck he wants, but fucked if he isn't going to pursue it ruthlessly, and completely disregard the collateral damage. I freely admit that I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to Sam in the early seasons, but it feels like the writers never really knew where they were going with the character and that makes me kind of sad because I sort of want to know what the fuck is going on in that boy's head. Does he realize the extent to which he is becoming like John? How much does he examine himself and his principles, and how much are they just based on sort of simultaneously wanting and not wanting to be like Dean, and also wanting to piss Dean off? To what extent does he even conflate Dean and John? How much of himself does he consider to be completely separate from his family? It's obvious that he loves Dean beyond the telling of it, but it must be so irritating to deal with Dean's issues all the time. And vice versa! Back when I was randomly reading a lot of Wincest fic (don't judge me) I kept running across this "all Sam wants is to ~heal~ Dean" stuff, and I found that pretty lulzy, in a weirdly sweet kind of way. Strangely enough I tend to give this show credit for a level of sophistication in writing that I'm pretty sure doesn't actually exist, which is unusual for me, but I am coming from Merlin so. At least this show's self-conscious tragedy, I guess, for lack of a better word, is a welcome change from Merlin's being ridic cracky but also having a titular character who kills people for fun without acknowledging that that's kind of weird. I have no idea why I keep wanting to compose essays in your comments without the least provocation, dude. I need to stop this behavior.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea why I keep wanting to compose essays in your comments without the least provocation, dude.
Ahaha, I love it. Then I do the dumb thing and think, "Hmm, I need to set this aside for time when I can give her the proper reply that she deserves!" and sometimes I don't get around to it, which is bad of me. Remember the commentfic we were doing of Susan Pevensie and Mulder being building-mates? I totally meant to continue that, because what you wrote was AWESOME, but it just keeps getting pushed back and pushed back. So let it be known for the record: that was (is!) awesome.

I think Dean's internalization is related to how he has always given the best parts of himself to his family, and it's so draining that I reckon that's why when he does let himself pursue something for himself, he pursues base desires. Women, food, whiskey.

it feels like the writers never really knew where they were going with the character and that makes me kind of sad because I sort of want to know what the fuck is going on in that boy's head.
Yes! I dunno how much of it is the writing, how much of it is just JPad's wooden acting. I found little Sam in flashbacks more of an interesting character than JPad!Sam. I think Sam's story is theoretically compelling, because the whole arc of "I just wanna be normal" to starring role in the End Times is so tragically "how the mighty have fallen!" but someone somewhere is doing something wrong because I am not finding it very interesting. He's very reactionary when it comes to his family, but I guess that can be said of Dean too. They don't think things through very well when family is involved.

lol, as someone who has spent a good amount of time splashing around in the skeevier waters of Narnia fandom, I cannot judge you for reading incest fic. But my attitude towards Wincest has been largely "meh" 'cos I am here for the Castiel/Dean because somehow SPN turned me into that kind of shipper. I was multishippy with Merlin and Narnia, but I don't know, SPN makes me scarcely know myself.

My eyes are HAZING OVER but the comment threads look really interesting.

Ok, let me offer my ~immensely interesting and unique perspective~ as a long-term Spn watcher.

1. I did think the show was very solid between s1 and the end of s2. But my favourite season is s4, because

2. While I find Dean fascinating, s4 grabbed me by the ears and made me a TOTAL CASTIEL FAN.

3. On balance I would MUCH RATHER watch an entire show built around Castiel than one built around Dean and Sam's cesty angsty love, because it seems to me that the writers are too interested in the kwik-fix approach and romanticise that relationship to the point where I feel angry on Dean's behalf more than I should need to.

4. It makes me laugh when fans assume that Sam is the most relatable character on the show. Why, 'cause he's the more obviously selfish of the brothers, and because he went to college and likes salad and the show's writers appear not to understand how ugly he can be as a character just as a human being (in case someone is gonna pop up about the demon stuff)? [/bitchy] I mean, to be perfectly honest I didn't give much of a shit about anyone on that level until CAS happened. I'm rooting for the freako alien angel, okay?

5. So basically it IS possible to have been a fan since the beginning who enjoyed most of what the first 3 seasons had to offer AND also rate Castiel and the related storyline higher.

6. S5 has been horribly uneven so far. Step the fuck away from the crack and TWOP, writers. Thanks.

7. I'm a non-White ESL fan from a majority POC Asian country, so maybe I'm a little more detached when it comes to the Americana... possibly.

When the show first started, I was eyeroll and refused to watch it because I though they were probably gonna screw up the folklore anyway. Not that folklore is set in stone, but still, appropriation at its most prime-time-friendly! OH HOW THINGS CHANGE, and yet don't. The first thing that piqued my interest was I think an aside someone said about Castiel and Dean's relationship. And I was like hmm, this relationship may hit a lot of my buttons.

So I think I was preemptively adoring Cas before he even appeared on my screen, and there still needs to be more of him on my screen. Less making him pass out for an entire episode and more saving people hunting God. I was never really into the Wincest, I dunno. I love their love but I'm not interested in stories that are all about only it.

Yes, selfish Sam! Dean gave the best part of himself to his family, but Sam with the "I just want to be noooormaaaaal" made me eyeroll. 'Cos mostly I have heard that shtick before, and Sam needed to be something more than this trope to be interesting. In theory his story is a compelling one, because he goes from rejecting this whole life to having no choice but to be a key player, how the mighty have fallen etc, but. Maybe later.

I'm also non-white ESL from a majority POC Asian country, currently in the USA, and I'm fascinated by the Americana, or at least how it's portrayed. How much they romanticize it is kind of revealing.
