SPN/X-Files: Scullyverse: basketball & time travel

More Scullyverse commentfic? Don't mind if we do! And then some more below from other threads.

SPN 5x10 episode coda
Cheating at basketball is a perfectly acceptable way to deal with grief. Sam, Mulder. PG. 232 words.

Sam's not good at basketball; he's just tall. It was why he got picked first in gym class, back when things like gym class existed in his life. Mulder actually likes the game though, and when it comes to Tall Person vs. Tall Person at basketball, Sam loses his only advantage.

So he plays dirty.

What the hell, right? It's not like it matters. Getting a ball through a hoop doesn't matter, but winning can matter. He shoves Mulder and elbows him and yanks his shirt, until finally Mulder shoves back with more force than Sam expected.

"What's wrong with you, man?" Mulder demands.

And what can Sam say to that? I got my friends killed, and I can't kill the devil. I might as well cheat at basketball.

"Forget it," Sam says. And then Sam says he's going home. He turns to leave and feels a hand at his arm.

"Hey, seriously," he hears Mulder say. "What's wrong?"

"Fuck, man," says Sam. "Just don't. Okay?"

But Mulder does anyway, because one of Mulder's god-given talents is asking too many questions. Sam answers obliquely, but he still ends up sitting with Mulder on a park bench, passing back and forth the flask Sam's been carrying around with him these days.

"The world's going to shit," Sam sighs.

Mulder says, "Don't I know it."

"You really don't," Sam says, and takes another swig.

The accidental tragedies of drunken time travel a.k.a. SO IT'S FINALITY-OFF YOU WANT, EH? Scully, Castiel. PG. 288 words.

During Cas's bender, he time-travels back to Scully a few times, but he's so drunk that he messes up the chronology of his visits. The first time he goes back, it is March 14 on her calendar. The second time he goes back, he overshoots and ends up in March 11. The third time he goes back, it's March 14, an hour after he left that first time. Scully doesn't know what to make of his conversation.

The last time Scully will see Castiel is in 2007, and he will still be on his bender, the worst legs of it. He'll look at her face and frown in confusion, and say, "You look different," trying to figure out if it's the booze or the world. He says, "I think it's your hair." And he'll fumble with his cellphone and slur and sway and say, "I'm having trouble with my voice mail..."

And a stunned Scully demands, "Are you drunk?"

"My voice mail is having trouble with my PIN number," Castiel says. "I have a message."

"Castiel, where have you been? All this time?"

"All what time?"

And she just can't comprehend.

Castiel cajoles her into helping him with the voicemail, and he leans against a wall as he listens to his fucking message. He gives Scully a weary commiserating look probably intended to mean, "God, this guy goes on and on..."

He hangs up and sighs, "Sam," as if that explains everything.

"I don't care about Sam," she snaps. "Look, the last time I saw you--"

"There's a prophet in Minnesota," says Castiel, which as far as explanations go isn't much better than 'Sam'. "Thanks for your help. I'll keep in touch."

And then Castiel is gone.
