the trouble with fish poetry
I usually post pictures of thingstiels on my tumblr, but I made an exception this weekend and 6x20-spammed the shit out of it. I apologize if you are only there for the trees and deer. If any of the rest of you are interested in my 6x20 spam and corresponding completely coherent and entirely unemotional commentary, you can find it under this very accurate tag.
Spoilers under the cut.
-- My gen fics are more gen than this episode.
-- So how does demon-making work now that Hell is an endless queue? Or is the elimination of the demon-making process also part of Crowley's restructuring plan? How do demons feel about having to put down the knife and pick up the three-hole punch? What would Alastair think, if he were still alive? Can we have 4x17 AU where Sandover is actually Crowley's Hell? Can we have an office sitcom starring Meg and Crowley?
-- Fandom seems pretty divided on who is right and who is wrong, but isn't that the point? 'Supernatural' has never been preachy about morality. Morality has only been a stage for fallibility. Mary, John, and Dean made deals with demons; Sam had Ruby; and now Cas has Crowley, yet in none of those cases are our 'heroes' villainized or stripped of nuance.
-- One of the bigger twists in this episode is finding out that Cas actually is the angel of Thursday. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
-- ARE THOSE CHEKHOV'S EGGS?
-- LOL IS THAT A PORTRAIT OF CROWLEY HANGING IN THE CORRIDORS OF HELL?
-- Points to
smilla02 for noticing this: OH MY GOD THE STREETLAMP FLICKERING ABOVE SAM'S HEAD WAS NOT BECAUSE SAM IS SUPERNATURAL -- IT'S BECAUSE CAS WAS THERE TOO. HOLY SHIT.
-- Who thought up of the idea to trap Cas in holy fire? What if it was Dean? What if Dean just wants to get the truth so he can put all this behind him? What if it was Sam or Bobby who thought of it, and Dean balked? What if it was Sam or Bobby, and Dean quietly resigned himself to it? Who set up the holy fire? What if Sam starts to pour the oil and Dean stands up and says real quiet, "I'll do it"? When they find the booze, what if Bobby just wordlessly pours Dean a drink? What if Dean pours himself the drink, and Bobby and Sam exchange glances?
-- RAPHAEL: The apocalypse is God's will.
CASTIEL: How can you say that?
RAPHAEL: Because it's what I want.
And that's the kicker, isn't it? Giving free will to angels is like giving car keys to a drunk person. By the way, this scene totally reminds me of meetings in the godfather's study, which is more proof that this episode was tailor-made for me.
-- Truth be told, I went into this episode so sure that Dean was gonna dump Cas for fucking with Sam's soul. AND THEN THE OPPOSITE HAPPENED. This is Dean learning from his mistakes with the S4 Sam debacle. No matter how hurt you are by your bros keeping secrets from you, you should never let them go because you are always stronger together than you are apart. Dean was applying the lesson and tried repeatedly to keep Cas in the fold. And Cas was the one who dumped him.

BECAUSE SERIOUSLY CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW UPSET DEAN WAS ABOUT DOUBTING CAS AND LYING TO CAS, HOW MUCH DEAN HATED HAVING TO DO THAT, HOW MUCH HE WANTS TO PUT THIS BULLSHIT BEHIND HIM AND TRUST CAS AGAIN? YOU GUYS DEAN WAS SO UPSET AND AGITATED OH MY GOD DEAN'S FACE OH MY GOD DEAN'S FEELINGS ABOUT CAS, I CAN'T EVEN HANDLE IT OH MY FUCKING GOD.

LASS: Ben Edlund, did you really just go there?
BEN EDLUND: Look, I don't know why you make it so hard for yourself. Here, let me help you out. Let me throw in a scene where Dean says Cas is like a brother to him.
LASS: ...IF YOU INSIST.
"Why didn't you call?"/"Why didn't YOU call?" is such a typical relationship problem and the fact that THIS IS APPARENTLY DEAN AND CAS'S PROBLEM (ONE OF MANY) IS BLOWING MY MIND. Dean didn't reach out because he didn't think he needed to. Cas didn't reach out because he thought he needed to NOT reach out (and also, later, because Crowley might kill them). It's so very typical and stupidly human that I don't even know what to do with myself, aside from rewatching this scene for approx forever.
OKAY, EDLUND. IF YOU INSIST.
AND EARLIER IN THE CAR (WHERE I THOUGHT IT WAS A 5x22 FLASHBACK), WHEN DEAN WAS LIKE, "Cas, you'll call if you get into real trouble, right?" AND THEN CAS MADE THAT FAAAAAAACE, PERHAPS REALIZING LOST OPPORTUNITIES, AND THEN HE FLEW OFF WITHOUT ANSWERING AND I WAS LIKE OH GOD OH GOD. BUT ANYTHING THEY ASK OF EACH OTHER AT THIS POINT IS ONLY DAMAGE CONTROL. ARGH. CAS. DEAN. CAS. DEAN.
Oh my god, the disconnect that I thought was natural (if mean) was also deliberate and significant. With one "where were you?"/"i was here", so much of the season fell into place. Oh my god, this was why. This was why, all along.
Oh my god Cas is (was) family because Cas has earned it, he has gone to the mat cut and bleeding so many frigging times, and in Dean's eyes that means Cas has earned it and that means he is here and will be here, and DURING THE HOLY FIRE SCENE WHEN DEAN SAID "YOU SHOULD'VE COME TO US FOR HELP, CAS", CAS SAID "MAYBE" BECAUSE HE FINALLY REALIZED THIS, HE FINALLY SAW WHAT DEAN SAW, FINALLY SAW THE TRUTH OF THEM BUT BY THEN IT WAS TOO LATE, IT WAS TOO LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE.
THE MOST PERFECT AND EXQUISITE OF HEARTBREAKS.

Clearly my favorite SPN fics and my own are OOC because there is not enough Dean&Cas shmoop in them.
I understand Ben Edlund's needs and support his life choices.
Later there will be another 6x20 post dedicated specifically to DEAN'S FACE OH MY GOD THE FACES HE MADE, but for now, I invite you all to come play here:
