[...he's scrapped the death cab and elliott smith from his playlist...]

This is a short one.

Before You Come Back
LOTRips. Dom/Billy. PG.
'Billy appreciates weird trivia like that.'

The reason Dom can't get lost in earnest songs about broken hearts anymore is that, now, heartbreak would actually lose him something real. He's scrapped the Death Cab and Elliott Smith from his playlist, and prefers the clever guitar bands who sing about how angry they are or how they wish they're drunk. Dom prefers to relate to self-obsession than Billy-obsession.

He's borrowed Ian's The Truman Show DVD, and when it gets to the part where Jim Carrey's telling Noah Emmerich about Fiji - "You can't get any further away before you start coming back." - Dom gets a sudden hankering for a globe. He wants to see what city is farthest away from Honolulu and what city is farthest from Glasgow, so he can tell Billy. Billy appreciates weird trivia like that. "At least I'm not in ____," Dom would say, "and you're not in ____."

Dom puts Franz Ferdinand on his Winamp and surfs the net looking for a virtual globe, clicking half-heartedly through Google results and irrelevant AskJeeves answers. He considers going out and buying a globe himself, or maybe he can call Viggo because Viggo would probably have a globe, but fuck it. Billy's not the kind of man to cry for want of trivia.

"I fear I'm not the man you knew," writes Dom in his next email, "for your absence has made a pussy out of me."

Billy replies, "That's a compliment, right?"

What Dom wants to do after shooting wraps is hop a plane to Glasgow.

What Dom is doing right now is counting the days.

*sniff*

I love the Truman/globe part. Long-distance sucks.

*makes self emo*

Now write us Viggo/Joe Black, whee! :-D

Viggo/Joe Black

Random!

But interesting.

Hmmm...

[identity profile] mumblemutter.livejournal.com 2005-01-09 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
See, we were talking about Brad and Jennifer's splitup, and then, almost apropos of nothing (oh right, there were Viggo screencaps), I wondered if Viggo/Brad would be hot or just very very unsexy, and I thought the latter, but then I thought some more and there was some imagery of a very very pretty and innocent Joe Black and a rather scruffy Viggo (like in Hidalgo, but without the horse), and he would seduce Death and so forth and it kind of made sense at the time. We decided that Viggo would swallow, but that's optional.

Hm. Should I be embarrassed or something?

Absolutely not, 'cos then what would that say about my two paragraphs and clump of dialogue (so far)?

[identity profile] mumblemutter.livejournal.com 2005-01-09 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! <33333333333!!!!

. . . is what I would say. :-D

Maybe that's more. I'm not the one usually in charge of my own productivity. I call it serendipity, but othere people prefer the term laziness. Feh.

I not really sure why I liked this one so much, The Truman Show reference, the Google/AskJeeves (for we've all don that with stupid searches only to give up) or the comment in Dom's e-mail....I know, it was the whole thing :)

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2005-01-09 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The Truman Show is one of my favorite movies, truth be told. THanks for reading, yo. I appreciate it!

What a brilliant exchange. I love it.

I adore this ficlet. It's wistful but hopeful, and you do so much in so few words. Lovely.
