"Ya. Aku mencari--" / "Bokapmu, ya, oke. Cas, Sam nggak ada."
HOLY FUCKSHITS: Indonesian-language Supernatural fanfiction jfldsjfa;l <3 <3 and like Team Free Will is all terkejut because biasanya Indonesia nggak exist di Internet, but here it is! Seperti miracle dari heaven! "Yang bener aja," says Sam, and "Busyet," says Dean, and Cas is all, "Ini menghabiskan waktu. Lucifer masih berkeliaran!" YOU TELL 'EM, CAS. omg some of the fics WARN FOR SELF-INSERTS. Precious!
Speaking of which, I tried writing 300ish more words of Indonesian SPN fic. It's just some random snippet, probably the beginning of some casefic, but I mean, this is pretty much just language practice and a composition exercise, so the willy-nilly snippets help keep it low-pressure. Also, my vernacular's probably off and sounds like an old person's.
In other news, there are these two essays that deal with the portrayal of class issues and economic status in SPN that I found quite interesting. A lot of the hunters in SPN seem to be coded lower-middle class, and I do end up wondering if there are upper class hunters in SPNverse, somewhere. Using frequent flyer miles to zip around on airplanes from case to case, making hunt money from stock market shenanigans. I imagine someone kinda like Daniel Ocean meets Batman type of person. (...So, basically George Clooney?)
Now seems like the time for an interview meme.
haruslex asked me five questions. If you want me to ask you five questions, comment with your favorite dessert.
1. What's your favourite black and white movie?
It is a bad sign when my first thought is, "I wonder if Sin City counts?" Outside of Pi, I don't remember many black and white movies, and I don't even remember if I even finished Pi. I've become real crap at movies in general ever since I moved to the US because movies are hideously expensive here. So, uh. I like The Twilight Zone?
2. Something I actually meant to ask you and completely forgot: who'd play 'Mary' (Martin?) Winchester in your genderbent Supernatural? My life is not complete without knowing this!
Young Mark would be played by Zach Gilford:

Older Mark would be played by Viggo Mortensen, because when woobie quarterbacks are good, they grow up to be the king of Gondor:

There are a handful of people I forgot to cast, so let's just go through them now really quickly.
Anna Anthony Milton would be played by Jared Leto. What's the angel name for this dude, then? Antoniel?:

Younger Jane Winchester would be played by Samaire Armstrong. Here is Jane before her life got completely fucked over:

Bela Brendan Talbot would be played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. That's probably some magic sword or some shit that he stole and is gonna sell to the highest bidder:

Ash would be played by Kaitlin Olson. Here is Ash before she competently translates Javanese incantations:

3. If you were going to a desert island, what book would you take to pass the time?
TOUGH CALL. I'll do the cheat and list two. Probably 'Abandon' by Pico Iyer for its meditations on love, loss, God, and loneliness, which sounds about right for being stranded on a desert island. Or maybe I should go for the Hitchhiker's Guide omnibus, because it's funny. Well, when it's not being disorientingly sad.
4. Who would you marry, boff, and kill from Merlin?
I would marry Gwen because she is the most sensible one. I would boff Arthur because look at him. I would probably kill Mordred because he's gonna cause a lot of trouble for everyone and I'd rather not have that, thanks.
5. What's a skill you wish you had?
Faking accents.
I should probably update the genderbent!SPN post with these new castings, then.

oh man, ten years of bahasa malaysia and i understood like, half of that. barely! (and not just because it's bahasa indonesia either. it would probably be the same if it were malay.) but hey, its existence makes me happy!
give me five questions!
eta: "Cas," keluh Dean, "kadang-kadang aku bener-bener benci adikku." <--NOW THAT I UNDERSTOOD THOUGH. awesome!
no subject
I think I used more vernacular structures also, so that probably didn't help. I was wondering how 'formal' I should be in the narration. Also I am rusty in this language, so that probably doesn't help either! XD
1. Which book should be turned into a movie next?
2. What are three of your favorite foods?
3. If you were to just randomly insert Peter Petrelli into any book/TV show/movie, which would it be and what would happen?
4. What is something you enjoy despite yourself?
5. Won't you recommend to us some songs for the springtime? :D
no subject
seriously dude it's very likely that no-matter how you wrote it i would only understand half of it I AM THAT TERRIBLE AT THIS LANGUAGE. in all languages, actually - it's just not one of those things i'm good at, sadly. but i feel that writing SPN fanfiction in indonesian is the best thing ever, just because.
whoo questions!

Still loving your genderbent spn. They're actually all prettier than the real cast, which I didn't think was possible.

I wanna see this textbook so bad.

MAN, KAITLIN OLSON AS ASH? I HIGHLY APPROVE OF THIS. Oooh, what about Henrikson? And Meeeeeeeg? And Azazel? My vote is for Jessica Walter. Or Mary McDonnell! WHO WOULD SKINNER BE? Man, this show does not have a whole lot of recurring characters, does it. What about Gordon? A-and Jess? How am I still going is what I want to know.
OH HEY QUESTIONS. Man, idk, I don't really have a favorite dessert. (Damn right I follow the rules.) Cake! Cake is fun to say. Hit me up! WHY AM I SO TALKATIVE
no subject
HENRIKSON AND MEG. GORDON AND JESS. Man, there are too many recurring characters, I can't keep up. I was also having a discussion with someone about genderswapping Lilith viz. would there be a point? I mean, it's fucking Lilith.
1. What are three of your favorite fruits?
2. What happened that one time Sam and Dean checked out a haunting in Paddy's Pub? \o/
3. What do you do that you hate when other people do it?
4. Sam, Dean, Castiel: fuck, marry, kill.
5. What is something you think is underrated?

Re: this meme, it kind of worries me that the only time in my life I have written anything even vaguely resembling a plot is 1000 words in a meme response. It worries me that I wrote 1000 words as a meme response. Okay I'm going to bed now.

I can't find any in Bahasa Malaysia, though :p.
To comment on your reply to Horusporus on Dreamwidth:
It's actually "negara jiran", literally neighbouring country. Negeri means state.
... Dia minggat!
OMG LOL ROTF LMAO. I got this picture in my head of Rano Karno saying that exact same words.
I gotta say Dean grumbling in Bahasa Indonesia is ... I have no words. It is cute, intense, funny, deep and ... and... *flails*.
I failed to log in into Dreamwidth; beginning to really loathe it. Making commenting a zillion times harder. X(

I was wondering also whether I should've made the narration more conversational in tone, more Dean streams-of-consciousness and even LESS sastra, but HAHA my Indonesian conversation is kinda patchy anyway, so.
Ah, okay! Thanks.
I got this picture in my head of Rano Karno saying that exact same words.
lsjfdlskfds AHAHAHAHAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Anak Winchesterrrr, ketinggalan jamaaaaan!
At some point, I want Dean to unthinkingly slip into Sunda (west Java language), especially when he's interjecting, though I dunno how much sense that would make, since they're still Americans in Kansas and not actually in Indonesia. And it brings up interesting questions about language hierarchy in Indonesia. My mother's side slips into Sunda all the time, especially when excited, and the USA kind of doesn't have an equivalent to this kind of in-country multilingualism. I mean, maybe Spanish? I dunno. But in the hypothetical world where the Winchesters speaking Sunda makes sense, I can see Sam speaking less Sunda than Dean. Maybe when they were growing up, Sam and Dean used to speak more Sunda to each other and to their dad, but when Sam went to Stanford, that was one more thingn to distance himself from as he embraced the standard language and a standard life.

Hmm, I take this back. I wager this happens in immigrant households, first second third generation. Basically, a situation where a language is still vibrant and vital in one's life despite not being the national/state-assigned default. But in the USA, I think this kind of thing is usually associated with immigrant/multicultural households. But in Indonesia, people who also speak Sunda and Javanese and Batak etc are not immigrants. They have 'been there all along', and their language is minoritized anyway. It becomes a 'bonus', rather than baseline.
And I guess this is why Sam and Dean can't speak Sunda, lol. The sociolinguistic foundation is different, and the implications/associations of being multilingual just aren't the same.

I live in New Orleans. My favorite desert is BREAD PUDDING. Well, good bread pudding, of course.

I don't know whether I could read a Malay SPN fic though, as the subtitles they give for the show is absolutely horrendous. Except for one thing. Sam called Dean "abang" and Dean refered to himself as "abang" too and I thought that's so sweet. The rest not so lol. The jembalang for demons and the "mate berembun" for dewy eyes sound awfully awkward to me.
Were you the one who did the monochromatic re-casting of SPN? I love that one but I can't remember who did it!
no subject
And Ash omg yes!!
no subject
no subject
Wow, Sam calling Dean abang *__* I love it. Did the subtitles have them referring to themselves in the third person? Does Malay do that too? I imagine Sam could also call Dean 'kakak' or even 'mas'.
The chromatic, you mean? ;) I think that's this one (http://eviinsanemonkey.livejournal.com/323890.html). I like that one a lot too.
no subject
Yes, we refer to ourselves in the third person when among family :)
I have two Indonesians and three Malaysians on my flist and that's about it. I'd love to add you, if you don't mind.
And you probably should do an Asian re-casting of SPN. I toyed with the idea in my head for a while but couldn't get past Takashi Kaneshiro as Sam, Dev Anand as John Winchester and young Ari Wibowo as Dean. And you probably don't know these Malaysian actresses but I have Maya Karin as Jess and Deanna Yusof as Mary!

FUNNILY ENOUGH, I started commentficcing an SPN AU here (http://lassiterfics.livejournal.com/140846.html) in which
Sam and DeanSatri and Dimas are hunters in the US who are also immigrants from Indonesia, and Dimas is played by Evan Sanders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:EvanSanders.jpg). No idea who would play anyone else though. I don't know Asian actors at all, so you're better off doing an Asian recast than me. ;)no subject
