Okay, willingly running into traps in abandoned buildings when you know you've got a snowball's chance in hell of coming back out. Is this reminding anyone else of 'The End'? But at the same time, this is vehemently NOT 'The End' because unlike this Castiel right here, Croatverse Cas totally stuck around to watch Dean fail. Answer: C. If Cas had given the box cutter to either of the boys, the other would've gotten all pissy and jealous at missing the chance to touch naked angel chest, and with the tension already between them, it surely would've ended in a fight. No, to keep them from beating on each other, Cas carved it himself. Sam and Dean held a mirror for him, jointly, and ogled.

Umm, I think it had to be either Dean or Sam, because it seems impossible that he'd do it himself. I would normally assume that he'd give it to Dean, but what with the betrayal he's feeling this episode, I think it's quite likely it was Sam.

*hours later* RIGHT WHERE WAS I?

1) The correct answer is that Cas tells them what he's going to do and both Sam and Dean stare at him in disbelief. "You're going to carve it into your skin?" asks Sam and Cas smirks and says "No. You do it," while holding the blade out to Dean. Then Sam has to awkwardly hold Cas' trenchcoat while Dean barely scratches the knife over Cas' chest. "Deeper," Cas growls, and grabs Dean's wrist, drags the knife through his skin and stares Dean down.

2) In Australia we call it a stanley knife! I think it was originally a brand name, or something.

E? Cas tried to, couldn't get the angle right, Dean took over but he kept staring at Cas' chest instead of cutting, so Sammy took the blade from him and started doing it himself, while Dean mumbled "such a control freak!" and tried to get the cutter back, which made them start a bitchslap fight, like, little girls all palms slapping palms, so Cas finished it himself, got re-dressed, asked them if they were ready to stop the apocalypse already or had better plans and then went on to be a BAMF in front of the other angles, leaving Sam and Dean to mourn the lack of Cas-chest-ness.

I call that knife a boxcutter and I'm from California. It appears to have a razor blade which gets changed out when it gets dull.

An exacto knife is smaller and the blade longer.

My god, I have never seen anything more awesome than that Mean Girls comic strip. LOVE IT. I was laughing so hard I was close to tears. Brilliant!

As for the questions:

I think it was supposed to be implied that Castiel cuts it himself. However, since he exchanges the expositional dialogue with Dean, not to MENTION all their moments throughout this episode, I think it's a fair fangirl assessment to say that Dean assisted. Since I am a Dean girl and I adore Cas, Sam is always auxiliary anyway.

They're using a boxcutter, because it is orange (industrial safety color) and has a wide blade for slicing cardboard. Exacto knives are tools of precision and usually used by artists for fine work. They look like silvery pens with a blade instead of a felt tip. I'm from New York and the definition is pretty clear around here.
