and there's also remix deadline to think about

A few years ago, someone made a Supernatural fanart that I think was also a Boondocks fusion, wherein an aged-up Huey and Riley Freeman were hunters. I hear that the comments contain interesting discussion about how life would be different for Sam and Dean if they were black. I have tried looking EVERYWHERE for this, but alas, I cannot find this fanart. Do any of you have a link? ETA: Found! Thanks, [personal profile] nextian. No discussion in the comments though :( . I guess that happened in the referring post itself, wherever that is.

Hey, SPN 5x21.

I googled 'delacroix shrimping' and this is what came up:

So that's where Mr. Comatose banished himself to, I guess. I have this image of the shrimpers pulling in their nets for the day, and WTF there's this guy in there with his limbs sticking out of the mounds of shrimp and fish. Holy shitcakes! Which brings me to my next point: has Cas washed his clothes since then? Probably not, in which case I pity whoever had to sit next to him on the bus. But if he did, then what was he wearing while his clothes were being washed?

How did he get money for bus tickets? Have the Winchesters taught him how to grift yet? How did he pay for hospitalization? Is Jimmy's health insurance still working, for some reason? Cas's last insurance provider was Heaven, and that didn't work out so well. As Dean Smith once said, "You don't want to fight ghosts without health insurance." That goes double for averting the apocalypse. I'm inclined to think Cas just walked out of the hospital without paying because a) he doesn't know any better, and b) he's got shit to do, yo.

My account doesn't have polling capabilities, so lemme just ask it straight. Whose care was Cas under in the hospital? Was it

or

?

I imagine Castiel trying to buy a bus ticket would be similar to Castiel buying a cellphone, except worse because he can't mojo the clerk into complacence. Newly human Cas, what adventures did you have between Delacroix, Louisiana and Davenport, Iowa? Who did you meet and what did you talk to them about? Or did you mostly keep to yourself? What food did you eat at rest stops? Did you get burgers, and did they remind you of Dean? What did you dream about, when you slept?

Why were Sam and Bobby so surprised when Cas revealed that Michael's gonna ride Adam? Didn't we learn this in the 100th episode? And another thing, so, demon blood's not just a placebo and it really can strengthen Sam? Uh...?

ANYWAY. I bet that between the first phone call and Cas showing up at the retirement home, the Winchesters got a lot of phone calls from Castiel stoned off his ass on pain medication. There's not really a lot to do when you're stuck in bed. When Cas is not being mystified by television, he calls Dean and vacillates between being earnest, angry, blubbery, incoherent, too coherent, accusatory, apologetic, frustrated, and resigned.

Speaking of which, this episode calls back croatverse so wonderfully, omg. I LOVE IT. Like Samifer said, "No matter what you do, you will always end up here," and they are all on the verge of ending up here! This is 5x04 in its larval stage! I kind of wanted Dean to be more freaked out by it, but I guess he's too busy ganking horsemen to navel-gaze about futures past. Fine. I guess Team Free Will'll win this time, though, so I'll just sit here and wait for the inevitable croatverse redux AUs to come out where Sam couldn't resist Lucifer after all and is now permanently Samifer. Dean continues to lose it because this future is the same but different, different enough to emphasize what's the same. This is the future he was supposed to prevent. (Dean wonders what he would tell his past self if Zachariah were to send him to this future.)

Is Jimmy finally dead? I am 97% sure he is, but Pestilence still called Cas an "occupied vessel". But now it's just occupied by Cas himself? He doesn't have the power to keep Jimmy around anymore. Or, maybe Gabby's gonna get kripked.

The second best scene was Death making Dean eat the pizza. Dean's submission was A+. That scene was fucking charged. The absolute best scene, though, was Cas losing his shit at the bus ticket vendor.

AHAHAHA Cas being in the Scrubs or House hospitals cracks me up XD Wouldn't it be awesome if he could see JD's crazy imaginings using his angel mojo (lets say he has enough left.)

Why were Sam and Bobby so surprised when Cas revealed that Michael's gonna ride Adam? Didn't we learn this in the 100th episode? And another thing, so, demon blood's not just a placebo and it really can strengthen Sam? Uh...?

It was my impression that they weren't surprised, cos Sam said, "We were trying not to think it," or something along those lines. And demon blood never was a placebo, otherwise what was all that Panic Room withdrawal crap for? And Ruby would never have tried so hard to make him drink it, if it meant nothing.

I want to see a film noir AU with Cas and Crowley as private investigators, and have an office like Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, with the pull-down bed and everything. Cas all naieve but weird-info-clever, and Crowley all savvy and good at reading people's minds. Kinda like Booth and Bones, now I think about it! I like Crowley. I reeeeeeally hope he doesn't pull a Ruby, but I can't quite trust him. But at least he's upfront about his sneakiness,!

Like I told you in my lj, you are so full of excellent ficcing questions. As soon as I have time again, I am going to be so all over this. (But I hope you're all over it first.)

[identity profile] l-a-r-m.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This is like, the best post ever. So many awesome things that I didn't even consider! Your brain is awesome for thinking of this.

I love love loved the moment when Cas suddenly turned up to save them, and he had donned his trenchcoat yet again. BUT DOES IT SMELL LIKE FISH?! LOLZ I love this. Now I'm dying to see a fic about Castiel on a bus reeking of fish. ROTFL.

All these thoughts are fantastic. Samifer. Love it.

[identity profile] kimboosan.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Cas losing his shit at the bus ticket vendor was great, especially since the vendor did not even realize Cas had lost his shit, just thought he was a crazy homeless person in a dirty trench coat. \o/

So, see, here's what I'm obsessed with thinking: season six. They need a lead in; SPN seasons have ALWAYS ended with some epic, tragic cliff hanger. Soooo...Sam's gonna manage to throw Lucifer down the hole but has to take the ride down with him (or Dean has to push him - woe! angst!) and it ends with SAM IN HELL and Dean upstairs trying to figure out how to get him out.

Y / N ?

I'm fairly certain Jimmy's still alive; just because I think they'd make a bigger production of it if he were dead. I'm betting Cas is gonna die, though, so will that destroy Jimmy anyway? Or are they angling to keep Jimmy alive? ....yes, I'm still fiddling with that hunter!Jimmy idea....

I too really loved how this referenced the Croat!verse all over the place. I was a little put out because it doesn't look like Sam's gonna say yes in Detroit, which OMG would have been so perfect. *pouts* Anyway. I was obsessed with Dean's jacket, thinking it looks like the Croat!verse jacket. *ponders*

Also, what/who was in that warehouse that Crowley nearly crapped himself trying to get away from? That scene was not there for giggles. Lucie himself?

I don't think I can make it through this week intact, I shall be shivering and stuttering and WAITING OMG SHOW! *claws at tv screen*

[identity profile] ariadnes-string.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
oh please let it have been House! And let there have been an epic stare-off between HL and MC to see who had the bluest and most penetrating gaze!

Looking forward to the transcripts of those late-night phone calls. Kvetchy!stuck-in-a-hospital-bed!Cas is my new favorite.

(and: remix deadline: eep! I've never done one of these before and...and...I don't really know what I'm doing...)

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Does Cas have any mojo left? Cas did say "just a speck" to Pestilence, but that may just have him throwing out heroic one-liners.

But it was also said that Sam doesn't need to demon blood to access his powers. I guess it makes it easier thought? Like, it's not placebo, but maybe it's steroids.

That would be a wonderful AU! XD

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'll be writing fic until after the finale. I hope you're all over this! Four people Cas met on the way to Davenport, and one person he didn't, y'know?

[identity profile] 22by7.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You know how I feel about Hugh Laurie and Misha Collins sharing screenspace.

:props chin on fists, waits for missing scene Casfic for 5.21:

I could watch many episodes full of Death making Dean do things.

Have the Winchesters taught him how to grift yet?
Combo of Dean and Cas's excellent adventure back in the 5.03 days and Castiel's powers of observation. Wearing stinky clothes would have helped him find a seat on the bus I think?

Or Castiel stabbed a lot of clueless hippies in the head and stalked off the bus like the serial killer he is. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Qn3tel9FWU)

I really fucking hope Castiel called Dean every 3 seconds. Sweet torment is sweet.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
<3 Hee! Castiel's return dredges up more questions than it answers! Someone needs to answer them, in fanwork form!

Cas kicking Pestilence's ass was pretty cool, especially since he's HUMAN NOW. Let's ignore bad story-pacing and pretend it's because CAS IS THE BADASSEST EVER.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
PLEASE LEAVE THE PREMISES, CRAZY FISHY-SMELLING HOMELESS PERSON! "Your customer service is terrible," Castiel informs them.

I was just talking to a couple of people about how it would be awesome if Sam was the beloved character who dies, because then he won't stay dead, and everyone can be alive for S6. I totally, totally thought Cas was gonna die, but actually now that he's human, I feel more optimistic about his chances. He has already experienced his big loss.

I didn't even think there was anyone in the warehouse. I thought Crowley was just put out that he was wrong. But come to think of it, yeah, you could be right, it could be Lucifer.

http://vito-excalibur.livejournal.com/198767.html
Alas, there is no meta discussion in the comments! Maybe it was in the comments of the LJ that I found the rec for it in...

[identity profile] kimboosan.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Your customer service is terrible," Castiel informs them.
Bwwwahahahaaa! Then the genuinely crazy homeless person points at Castiel and yells, "It's an ANGEL! Of the LORD! Everyone bow down!" And Cas is all, "Oh, shut up."

No no no, Crowley was totally freaked in his uber-cool Crowley way, he wanted away from that place quick-like. *nod nod nod* Something was up.

I agree, Sam being the one who dies would be awesome. Which is kind of a douche thing to say, as I love him, but hey, he's a WINCHESTER! Cande and I speculate that this would be an awesome way to get JDM back on the show, in that God sends him down to pull Sam out of Hell.

*off to read linky link*

Rats, I totally remember there being more discussion about it. I also remember I found it through metafandom during the whole race!fail wankery, so it's quite possible it was all in a referring post or something. *frowns*

I feel like it says a lot about fannish osmosis that even though I've never seen an episode of Supernatural in my life I still knew *exactly* what piece of art you were talking about. Wouldn't know where to find it, mind you, but I knew what you were talking about.

Also I vote House, because I can.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
omg Cas and House would get SO IRRITATED at each other, it would be fucking epic.

Cas in Delacroix to Davenport would be such a compelling mix of hilarity and angst. He is totally the sad clown, now more than ever.

This is only my second remix, and I need to tweak my second draft. Remix is my favorite of all the fic challenges. I'm sure you'll do fine! <3

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
it's quite possible it was all in a referring post or something.
It probably was. I think this fanart came out before Racefail though, didn't it? Racefail was early '09. But yeah, if Sam and Dean were black, this would be such a different show.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I just remembered that Bobby wired Cas money, so there's that too.

- Castiel bought a book of crossword puzzles to pass time on the bus, but the clues are inane, so he abandons the endeavor. He switches to sudoku, which he likes better.
- At a rest stop just outside of Cape Girardeau, Castiel eats an Arby's roastburger and contemplates the view outside the window.
- There's still five minutes before the bus leaves again, and Castiel has more than enough money left. He fishes for coins in his pocket and finds a payphone, dials the familiar number and waits for Dean to pick up.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw that fanart before I ever watched an episode of Supernatural too! Oh, fannish osmosis. For all its anonymity, LJ fandom is like a little village where everyone knows everyone else.

[identity profile] roque-clasique.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking of a different kind of boondocks, there's an art that's an xover with boondock saints and in it dean is smoking. Just FYI. I don't know where it is. I know where every other dean-smoking art is though. Also just FYI.

I haven't seen the past 3 episodes because I'm scared to. But I will have to mainline them before the finale, and IS THE FINALE NEXT WEEK??? I live in ficland and sometimes completely lose track of Show itself, good lord.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I know of exactly one fanart where Dean smokes, the one where he's part of that tarot deck. Hey, maybe you should ummmmm make like a smoking reclist or something. For your benefit, y'know, so you can keep track of them easy. Yeah.

What is your favorite smoking SPN fanwork?

I used to be super into Boondock Saints fandom! The Winchester and McManus brothers need to meet up and team up and fight crime. Between them, they've got the supernatural evil and the regular kind covered.

[identity profile] moment-of-sen.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, probably just the speck mentioned cos Cas doesn't lie, but in my head it'd be funny if he could see it.

When was that said? I've only seen some eps once, so I can't remember. I think his original powers disappeared when YED was killed, and his demon-blood powers only work when he's got the drug. Something like steroids, anyway! Like he could only take Famine when he had drunk the two demons sent to get him.

At least Cas can keep the trenchcoat, lol! And Crowley in a trilby hat would be smokin ;)

[identity profile] roque-clasique.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Smoking reclist?

Way ahead of you.

Here's a reclist from awhile ago: http://roque-clasique.livejournal.com/8697.html

And here's my memories: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=roque_clasique&keyword=smoking&filter=all

Check out smilla's fic on the memories, it's exceptional. ALSO wave-obscura's fic featuring the aforementioned Camel Crushes (smoking Dean AND Cas).

WOW I saved the Boondocks Saint art! It's there on the memories by wood_works.

Also WHAT where is the Tarot smoking art?

My favorite artses are:
http://silentpoetry1.livejournal.com/33551.html
and
http://www.petite-madame.com/dessins/original/saving-people-hunting-things-family-business.jpg

Uh if this doesn't cut it, I know a lot more smoking fic too that aren't on the memories. Seriously I am a complete freak about this and I don't even know why but I've accepted it and whaddaya gonna do.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I forget when they said that. But yeah, powers faded off after YED, and what's implied is that there's a way to access those powers without blood-drinking but Sam hasn't figured it out yet.

[identity profile] moment-of-sen.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I always wondered about that, cos Ava had full control over them, and Sam could have gained that control, but then YED went and he never got the visions again or anything. It was like they died with him, which is weird, cos wasn't it the blood he drank as a baby that gave them to him? But Sam's blood!powers aren't the same as the other powers the kids had, so they must be brought on differently, or Sam's just using them differently... Oh I don't know.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
!!!

<3 <3 <3 You are a CHAMP. Holy crap, these shall be tagged toberead on my delicious. Thank you! And woah, that petite-madame one art is fucking gorgeous! Here is the tarot one. (http://community.livejournal.com/spn_tarot/6021.html)

Haha, it heartens me that you are a freak about it. Gives strength and courage to those of us still closeted about it!

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I don't know.
I relate. Especially with recent revelations, the past just got more confusing.

[identity profile] roque-clasique.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh thank you! The tarot one is Petite-madame as well! Looks like I found another not-so-closeted freak ;)

Listen, if you ever need an excuse, you'll notice that a fair amount of smoking!fic these days has my name somewhere in the author's notes -- you too have my permission to blame me and be all WHAT OMG I WAS PRESSURED AND BLACKMAILED.

[identity profile] zempasuchil.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I know what fanart you're talking about, and I could swear I'd read meta too - stumbling around the internets the closest thing I can get is where [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine recs it with her paragraphs of commentary.

"Because the thing is - there is one thing different in this picture, and it changes everything. Imagine these guys driving through small southern towns in their big black car with all manner of guns. Imagine these guys running credit card scams, and trying to talk their way into strangers' houses, and, you know, the other stuff that Dean and Sam do. (Sorry, we have reached the limit of my osmotic fannish knowledge.) It would be a whole different narrative, I'll tell you that for free.

You know what I love most about this picture? Okay. We have lots of stories about bodyswaps of all kinds: his brain, her body! Two brains with but a single body! The brain from an alternate universe! And then we have all the transformation stories: puppyfic! This is closer than I really wanted to get to my feminine (or masculine) side! Wait, I didn't used to have wings! - just all kinds. But I've never seen a bodyswap or transformation involving race. Maybe I haven't been looking in the right places, but this drawing makes me imagine, oh, Cordelia Chase (queen of white privilege!) in Charles Gunn's body (Gender, race, and body swap: the transformation trifecta! Also, she'd probably end up with Wesley macking on her - don't tell me Gunn and Wesley didn't get up to stuff - and then they'd all need years of therapy. More years of therapy, I mean.). It makes me want the universe where John Sheppard is a girl (John Sheppard is always a girl; science has proven this) and Rodney McKay is mixed race. (And maybe Teyla is a robot! Um, no, wait, that's my other fixation creeping in. Sorry, sorry. Bodyswap AUs should not cross with robot AUs. Unless someone is bodyswapping with a robot, in which case we know what happens: TFV dies of happiness.)

Or, of course, we could have the universe where Sam and Dean Winchester are brown. That'd be really damn awesome, don't you think?"

http://thefourthvine.livejournal.com/97369.html

Don't see anything much in the comments there aside from "someone should totally do that omg". alas.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I was just going through her masterlist and hello smoking Sam. Well, smoking Jared, I guess.

you too have my permission to blame me and be all WHAT OMG I WAS PRESSURED AND BLACKMAILED.

holy awlekfjasodifj i was so focused on smoking art i totally didn't look at your dean&sam are black picture. i just had a conversation the other day with a friend who was like "i don't watch SPN because it's too white" and i was like "there are totally black people except they all die" and he was like "that's what i'm saying." so i showed him this picture just now and he was like "that's racist" and I was like "is it?" and he was like, "i don't know, fangirls seem kind of aewesome" and i was like "that's what I'm saying."

i'm sittin gon the couch with a bunch of friends drinking tequila and under the guise of changing the music on itunes I am writing this comment and I just got caught-out because i put on eminem (although that was less your fault and more someone else's fault... fnadom is distracting)

okay you have been a victim of drive-by drunk-roque APOLOGIES

This, exactly, and so much more.

This only makes me itch to write Indonesian Winchesters.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
What I said about you being delightful still stands.

Black Winchesters could be racist if we stop at skin color, I think, but I also think it can be handled in such a way that it could be a pretty illuminating story. You can't just copypaste white Dean and Sam's story onto black Dean and Sam's story, you can't ignore the race story. The racist truck story would be way different, for one XD, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Like the thefourthvine's quote says up there, here we got a couple of black felons rolling through small-town Americana with weapons in the trunk, and what racist sentiments lurk deep (or not so deep) in America, y'know? What would they not be able to get away with? What situations do they avoid just because they would be more conspicuous there?

A few weeks ago I was nursing a similar AU idea wherein the Winchesters are first-generation Indonesian immigrants to the US (http://lassiterfics.livejournal.com/140846.html) (how's that for self-indulgent), and THAT is even crazier as far as adjusting the narrative goes. I still kinda want to drabble it out, in bits and pieces.

Here's who I envision for Indonesian Dean a.k.a. Dimas:
Image

[identity profile] anniehow.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
There is so much fic I want out of this episode... everything you said, every option, both medical shows, I WANT IT ALL \o/ MWAHAHAHA

[identity profile] zempasuchil.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to see Indonesian Winchesters, for real. There's a lot of culture that the canon doesn't just include, it deals with - really awesome for a cultural crossover/AU/I don't know what you'd call it. (Like, remember when this show was about legends and Sam was researching Japanese demon myths etc etc? and now we have the pretty much judeochristian apocalypse. It's a whole nother goal, to go about putting worldwide myths together, I get it, but I miss that sense of the wild unknown frontier where anything is possible, where you encounter new strange unknown things. I've got the roadtrip yen. okay now I'm just blithering but yeah, Indonesian Winchesters!!)

[identity profile] roque-clasique.livejournal.com 2010-05-11 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That *is* crazy to consider, and would be completely fascinating. It would also be reaaaaally interesting to see readers' reactions... I imagine it would spark some interesting dialogue.

As for Dimas: *drools* I BUY IT. I would read the shit outta your AU, and again, I think it'd be cool to see what people have to say.

Who's Indonesian Sam, I have to know.

[identity profile] l-a-r-m.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I was at SPN Con in NJ this weekend, and I did get to ask Misha the vital question -- Did he give any consideration to Cas' transportation and whether or not he was reeking of fish for the whole episode? He told me yes, but that Cas had also thrown up blood all over himself, so that he smelled like vomit, blood, and then fish, and that swirl of odor was repulsing people. He also admitted the possibility of the hospital laundering the trench and suit while he slept. (When he said this, Misha forgot the word for sleep and the audience had to help him out. It was completely adorable.)

Anyways, I found your answer (sort of) and have to tell you again how awesome you are for bringing this up! I hope you don't mind I borrowed it for the Con. It was too awesome not to ask. It's fabulous!

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, news of this con has begun to disseminate! That's awesome that we get an answer to this very important question from the man himself. He forgot the word for sleeeeeep! D'aww, Smisha. Of course I don't mind you asking this for con, I don't think I'm the only one who wondered what the journey from Delacroix to Davenport was like. XD Thanks for telling me!
