i brake for thesis

1. Is 2010 like the year of the earthquake? There was another one in western China's Qinghai province this morning, seven on the richter and so far at least 600 dead. The Huffington Post has links to how you can help. Fandom, are we gonna have ourselves a help_china?

2. How about the AU where Cas and Anna are hunters together, and the Winchesters are angels. Uriel is the Bobby. What the hell would their last names be? The emotional/plot notes can't be the same as SPN. Anna is the older sister who wants out of this life, running away not to go to college, but to a simple life working some simple job. Younger bro Cas tracks her down when... something happens. Or maybe it's something else that compels her to go back to the life, because Anna in canon is never forced into anything. Canonically, she chose to fall, then she chose to be an angel again. So maybe something happens to Cas, and Anna is the one who pursues him. They reconnect, sort of. That is the pilot episode.

Mostly I just want to write about Cas and Anna on a road trip, patching each other up, fighting about their dad, Cas resenting Anna's aloofness, and Anna pitying his frustration. Recounting memories of their childhood and how much things have changed, but sometimes when Anna is the last one to fall asleep, she stares at the ceiling and listens to her brother's breathing in the next bed and it feels like being fourteen again, shacked up in another shitty motel room and waiting for Dad to come home. It's like that with Cas, she finds: being with her brother sometimes feels like time standing still.

I have no idea what the plot is, since Cas and Anna are emotionally so different from Dean and Sam. Anna is not so blindly self-sacrificing, and she probably has to end up pulling Cas back from a lot of stupid decisions. She always tell her little brother he has to think, man, think for yourself. "I'm not always going to be around to boss you around," Anna says, and she's smiling this crooked smile, and it feels like a little too much foreshadowing for Cas.

Mostly I want to rewrite 4.01 where Cas is all, "WHO ARE YOU," and Dean is like, "Dude, I'm the one who pulled you out of the fucking pit. Some thanks I get." Mostly I wanna rewrite 4.02 where Dean gets all in Cas's face in the end, all like, "Look, pal," etc. And omg, 4.16? 4.22? 5.04? jflksjdl.

But would this AU even naturally lead to canon S4? I don't know if Cas would summon a crossroad demon to bring Anna back from the dead. Maybe he'd do it for his dad, though. Maybe Cas goes to hell to get his dad back and Anna says DON'T DO THAT ARE YOU CRAZY, but yes, sometimes Cas is crazy, and something goes wrong and he gets stuck downstairs. Anna staunchly goes through every lore she knows trying to trick hell into giving her her brother back. Nothing works. Dean pulls Cas out of hell, but WHY? (Plus, Cas probably got all, "You should've saved my dad, not me," at Dean.)

And where does Sam come in? Maybe Sam is the Anna, and when he chose to fall, Dean spent years secretly looking for him on earth.

Aaaand that's all I got. I dunno, anyone wanna ramble it out with me in comments? Everyone should have a hunter AU. Mulder and Scully should be hunters. Gaga and Beyonce should be hunters. Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse should be hunters.

3. Meme time! Similar to the concept of [livejournal.com profile] firstlines1000, give me the first line and I'll reply with it as the first line of a ficlet/drabble thingie. Fandoms: Supernatural, Supernatural RPF, Fight Club, The Office, Parks & Recreation, classic Disney/WB cartoons, X-Files, Boondock Saints, Leverage, random anthropomorphism.

This is a very intriguing AU.
(Plus, Cas probably got all, "You should've saved my dad, not me," at Dean.)
YES YES YES THIS ♥

I've always been curious how Sam and Dean would be different if you reversed their ages. I don't think I've ever seen a satisfactory AU exploring how being the caretaker would change Sam, although I've seen some pretty decent younger!Dean.

Anna&Cas would read a bit like that, but not really. Castiel adores his older sister but fights with her about Dad. Anna doesn't understand why Cas holds their father in such high regard. as;ajsj;asld I need to think on this some more. (Hopefully [livejournal.com profile] unoshot will come over here and you'll just write it as comment!fic, haha.)

You know how you asked for an intrepid investigative journalist AU over at may's thing? I chewed on that idea for a while and now Castiel and Gabriel are co-commentators with Raphael as the weather guy, Anna as the intrepid field reporter, Uriel is the sports guy, and Michael and Lucifer are the political pundits that get into screaming matches on their show. Uh.

Hmmm, prompt, prompt ...

Castiel is tracing symbols in the dust of the earth when he feels the shift, space bending around one of his brethren.

Haha, your brain was also eaten by that intrepid investigative journalist AU prompt? We should have a whole intrepid investigative journalist AU festival! Your Michael and Lucifer idea is awesome, and Raphael the weather guy. (Looks like we're headed for a rainy weekend folks, nothing but grey skies in sight. Sigh.)

LOL OMG YES. Dean is the kind of person who puts on military/peacekeeping uniforms to infiltrate bases and rifle around the classified files while Sam watches his ass and tells him what a terrible idea this is. And Dean's like, "Five more minutes," and "Holy shit, look at these accounts," and then suddenly Cas's voice in their earpiece is all, "Get out, get out now!"

And Dean's like, "Hold on, let me--"

"Now!"

And Dean shoves some papers into his pack and Sam grabs him and they're out in the hall, trying not to look like they're making an escape. And back outside, they get in the jeep that Cas is driving and Cas says, "That is the stupidest thing you've ever, ever done."

And Dean just smiles his winning smile. "Stupider than Kuala Lumpur?"

"Okay, maybe not stupider than Kuala Lumpur."

"Definitely Prague levels of stupid, though," Sam mutters.

"Prague was not my fault," says Dean.

Cas says, "Repeating it won't make it true, Dean," and drives.

[identity profile] xaara.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, Cas the getaway driver. Sam and Cas always thinking, Why do we put up with this maniac, seriously, and being friends.

I want to send them all over the world! Naples, Vienna, Athens, Dar es Salaam. Oh, and CAIRO! Think of all the trouble they could get in there.

"I told you those kebabs smelled funny," Sam says, wringing out the washcloth and wetting it again as Dean kneels over the toilet bowl.

"Cas ate them," Dean says, gagging on the words, bile at the back of his throat.

"Cas has a stomach made of freaking reinforced steel. You've gone drinking with him."

And they would wander the marketplaces and Sam and Cas would argue about hieroglyphics and Cas would be cornered into buying ridiculous things like his name in a cartouche painted on papyrus. Dean would follow his nose to a stall stuffed with saffron, and stand there wrapped in it. Sam would spend a lot of time running his fingers over alabaster scarabs and would finally buy a tiny one made of lapis and keep it tucked in his pocket so he wouldn't have to explain to Dean about Khepri, and about making a life out of nothing. There would be some sort of weapons trafficking subplot and Action and Adventure and possibly Kidnapping.

All of which I cannot write right now, because my initial idea is still growing at rather unanticipated speeds and now there's that John/Mary hell thing to write and Remix and Aah!

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes yes! It would basically be travelogue with occasional bouts of intrigue. Dean wants to know if it's still PC to say Delhi belly. There's no such thing as vacation for Team Free Press, so what Bobby does sometimes is send them on assignments set in vacation-y places. Cover illegal fishing and coral reef destruction in the Philippines, he says. Bring your snorkeling gear, and strong sunblock.

So off they go, off to Cebu, where they interview mayors who treat them like tourists and give them brochures, avoiding the issue. They get in contact with translators and interview the people who fish, the people who sell fishing gear, the people who buy fish: they get impassioned speeches about the price of fish, about how hard it is to feed X number of children, how their equipment is inadequate and need to be updated, how no one is doing anything.

And there is one woman who then starts asking THEM questions: are they married, do they have kids, are they from LA, are they from New York, you must make so much money, such good jobs. Americans have so much money, ha, not like us hahaha, I am very poor, I have many children, some cannot go to school, I have a son nine-years-old, he is sick. You Americans, you have a big house. You have a big car. I walk walk everywhere, walk walk walk. My feet is hurt. My shoes is broke. My husband, he is sick, he lose job. And on and on she goes, staring Dean down with her big big eyes, her list of woes, her various hairshirts, her thin and weary voice challenging him until Dean caves and gives her 200 pesos and she says thank you, salamat, that means thank you in Tagalog. God bless you, sir, salamat po, and she finally leaves. Hunched over and beatific, she leaves. Dean stares at her until she disappears into the crowd.

No one says anything for a while, then Cas says, "That was unprofessional."

Dean says, "Fuck you."

Cas says, "You should know better--" and Sam cuts in, "Let's take a break," and yeah, they could all probably use a beer.

Ooh, ooh! I love that little snippet, it's so true and passionate and if anyone would cave in to huge eyes, it would be Dean. And Sam as the peacemaker between them is so perfect!

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, thanks! It would be Dean. I'm with Cas on this one, though. Dean knows he shouldn't but sometimes he can't help himself.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I have seen summaries for AUs where the older/younger sibling position were reversed. That would be interesting to think about. Would it make Sam more rebellious, or would it mitigate it? Would older Sam's reservations change the nature of John's investment in Dean's loyalty? In all universes, the brothers would just yin-yang no matter how you cut them; they shape each other too much.

lol where is Uno these days? I miss her. OMG LUCIFER AND MICHAEL PUNDITS, I love it. Too many times, Cas has had to shoot the camera and strained smile saying, "And now for a word from our sponsors!" as Michael and Lucifer continue to hurl invectives at each other in the background.

I will reply to the prompt in another comment. :D

[identity profile] kimboosan.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Dean as the younger is an interesting idea, but honestly, Sam as older brother = mini!John. Which, OUCH. I suspect Dean would probably end up being pretty much the same, just with a fixation on Sam instead of John. *ponders*

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
So is it basically then that John is not the center of this trinity, but Sam is? Because if Sam and John still butt heads, then the "You're SUPPOSED to take care of your little brother!" would strike harsher. And Sam DOES take care of Dean, god, all he does is take care of Dean it feels like. On hunts, on bar nights, on hustling nights, on 'oh shit the cops are after me' nights, on 'oh shit some woman's husband/boyfriend/brother/dad is after me' nights. Oh Dean, thinking he can get by on fast cars and winning smiles and enough bullets. And Sam starts getting claustrophobic and thinking of escape, maybe, but these uncharitable thoughts, these thoughts aren't fair to Dean. (Here is where 5.16 would differ maybe, because if Sam is an older brother with 'take care of Dean' ingrained in him, then he wouldn't just be seeing Dean as collateral damage of leaving the family. Dean would be so much more than that.) And maybe Dean's a little messier as a younger brother, because maybe he starts taking Sam cleaning up after him for granted.

[identity profile] kimboosan.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yes yes, I was totally thinking that Dean would get the whole "Princess" complex, invulnerable and infallible, because Sam was always there to fix up and clean up everything. Especially before John found out. In short, Dean would pretty much have a massive ego, methinks.

It's possible Sam would still leave, just take Dean with him, which of course throws canon out the window. Because Sam, he's possessive as much as Dean is, and he would consider Dean HIS because he raised him. Taking Dean would be his way of giving John the finger, flicking him off and leaving him with nothing after suffocating Sam for so long. Other than John kidnapping Dean, I can't really see how Sam would ever allow them to get dragged back into hunting...hmmm...

Of course the amusement value aspect is 12 year old Sam reading parenting books at the library because he's just sure that his father isn't doing it right. ha! Dean's competitive streak is for fun and games; Sam's is ruthless, and he would be determined to do better than his father, once he determines that he can.

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
If Sam does take Dean with him, I don't think Sam's going to go to college. I don't know if Dean would wanna go, though? While his connection to Sam is real and tangible thing, Dean's connection to his father and the idea of family is more idealized and malnourished, and so that sometimes overwhelm things, especially if Dean is taking Sam for granted.

Dean's competitive streak is for fun and games; Sam's is ruthless
Yes this.

[identity profile] kimboosan.livejournal.com 2010-05-05 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
So okay, throwing "Sam goes to Stanford" completely out, what would he do?

He'd probably run away as soon as he started passing for legal; we know he hit is growth spurt later rather than sooner, but it could still be about when he turned 16.

At that point, Dean would be 12. I don't think it would be difficult for Sam to:
A) Be a manipulative bastard and convince Dean to run away with him; Dean might even suspect he's being manipulated, but if there is one thing Sam has got down, it is how to always be right;
B) He lies, when their father leaves them for a few days, and tells Dean that John died on a hunt. He'd have a way to "prove" it up his sleeve because he's been planning this. They hit the road and hide from John; success rate I'd give Sam in this venture is 50/50, and of course when Dean finds out he'd probably run away from Sam for a while.

Of course the most clever thing to do would be to convince (without him being aware of it) Dean to run away on his own. Sam and John agree to split up to find him; Sam finds him and tells Dean that their father never even tried to look for him, and they are better off on their own. Of course John knows about YED and Sam doesn't, so he's desperate to find them, and eventually catches up with them several years later after they have settled down in Palo Alto, C.A. That would be...a really good story, actually. *ponders*

YOU! EVIL! Stop encouraging me. *glares*

4x18 coda

[identity profile] twoskeletons.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Castiel is tracing symbols in the dust of the earth when he feels the shift, space bending around one of his brethren. He learned these runes from Anna herself, back when they were still soldiers together, and these same runes call her to him now. She breathes into existence before him, and it still throws him to see her in this mortal body. Castiel remembers the barn, the way his sister's true form had bled out of Anna Milton's body, and that is the image seared into his mind. That is the Annael he recognizes, the one he fought beside, the one he loved and loves still.

Cas, Anna says by way of greeting.

He says, The last time we met, I told you I was considering disobedience.

I remember. Well?

Well what?

Are you disobedient?

Castiel hesitates, because he isn't sure.

He tells her what happened: the Prophet's visions, Sam and Lilith, Dean praying. He prayed, Castiel repeats in wonderment. He prayed, and I helped him. I don't think I was disobedient.

Anna smiles with one side of her mouth, and says, You're adorable, Cas.

He frowns.

She says, Everyone should be so lucky, getting their prayers answered just like that. But where would the world be if everyone got what they want, huh? And then she asks, What do you want, Cas?

What I want is irrelevant.

Do you want to be disobedient?

I... (What a question, he thinks.) I want to do the right thing.

She smiles with her whole face now, and says, Now you're getting it. Then, to Castiel's bewilderment, Anna does the most inexplicable thing: she pinches his cheek, and giggles, My little brother's growing up.

Castiel shakes his head to shake off her hand, and Anna laughs.

Okay, this? Is amazing. The problem is I'm having a hard time adding more to that statement, because it's all brilliant and I'd have to quote the whole ficlet back at you to tell you my favorite part. XD;; Anna's slight condescension combined with genuine pleasure in seeing Castiel slowly learn to think for himself, and Castiel's genuine confusion and discomfiture with her physicality in two respects: her human body and her pinching his cheek. I love it when Castiel is just bowled over by her question about disobedience.

Thank you thank you thank you!

Thanks again, bb! I think to a certain extent Cas and Anna kinda pity each other because they don't understand each other as well anymore, though I'm inclined to say Anna undestands Cas a little better than he understands her.
