i watched tv and now i'm here

I started typing whynot into the address bar, then autocomplete taught me that there is such a place as Whynot, North Carolina. Well, unincorporated community. It was established nearby other communities such as Erect and Hemp. Quoth the Wiki, "The community was originally spelled with two separate words, "Why Not". The origin of town's name came from residents debating a title for their community. A man finally remarked: "Why not name the town Why Not and let's go home?""

A wise man.

I have been WAITING for the new/last season of See. I was not impressed by the new/last seasons of Locke & Key or On My Block, so come hit me with a winner, show.  I wonder if once upon a time I would not have liked See very much because it's very violent, the same way Game of Thrones was not my cup of tea, but maybe my tastes have changed? I really like this show. I don't have very deep thoughts yet. I enjoyed the S3 premiere and I'm looking forward to more.

I'm all caught up on For All Mankind, and that show just gets weirder each season. S1 is worth watching. Love the space race AU where the USSR made it to the moon first and women became a more central part of NASA.  But in S3, it feels like Just Another Space Show and you kinda lose the alternate history luster of it. I appreciate what it's trying to do, but some things felt straight-up shark-jumpy.  I also have a tangle of thoughts about the representation of American politics on it that I have no idea how to begin unpacking. So there's that.

come back soon, malcolm subban.

HAHA SMITH IS DEMOTED DOWN THE LINES AND PAILLE IS PROMOTED UP THE LINES.

By HAHA I mean HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHHRGHRGRGH. It's nothing we're not used to seeing from Smith nowadays, and that is the unfortunate thing, the depressingly unsurprising thing. Paille missing open nets has become the punchline to a long-running and very stilted joke, but at least Paille shows up. Smith is a non-entity. Smith is losing his job to this guy. SMITH. SMITTY. WAKE UP, SMITTY. You can't do this to us, man. Not like this. NOT LIKE THIIIIIIIS.

So yeah, that was some tragic hockey last night, so naturally the perfect antidote is to watch a movie about hockey tragedy. ESPN's "30 for 30" last night was called Of Miracles and Men, about the 1980 Miracle on Ice from the Soviet POV. It's been widely compared to Red Army, but that one's still on the to-watch list for me, soooo Of Miracles and Men it is, and we loved it.

I had Smith not!fic I wanted to burble out, but I'm tired and hungry, so I will get to it AT SOME POINT, maybe. Also, sign up for hockeyexchange on LJ.

I hadn't realized that we're playing against Dallas next hahahahahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

(no subject)

It has become a running joke that the offensive production of teams I become a fan of turns to dust, so I guess, you're welcome, people who hate the Bruins. I accept gratitude in the form of monetary donations, please message me for further details. Meanwhile, I am forbidden from becoming a Patriots fan and currently instructed to root for Denver. Go Broncos!

I have this Hilary Knight/Julie Chu fic that's been sitting in my drafts that I should stop procrastinating. Also, I guess, my DCBB? But Christmas is a few days away, and I'm going to spend all day tomorrow making macaroons. This clarity of mission feels so good to me. For one day, I don't really need to worry about job applications and whatever. All I have to do is make macaroons and put them in cute bags. I will be so at peace.

Hey, do you guys watch Scandal? I'm halfway through S2 and I am digging the shit out of Mellie Grant. What a ferocious, sharp-toothed woman. Weaponize the performative femininity of a first lady like the BADASS YOU ARE. I don't really ship anyone, but I get strong king/lionheart feelings from Olivia/Harrison. The president needs to stop pooping his pants though, like sir you are an adult, you must stop defecating in your drawers, or at least buy your own diapers, like have you learned nothing?

spn 8x12 :DDD

THIS IS NOT REALLY AN EPISODE REACTION, IT IS MOSTLY MY RAMBLINGS ABOUT FEATHERS. I actually have ramblings also about the Most Noble and Ancient House of Winchester and the AU where Sam and Dean live a Malfoy kind of life, but I ran out of time, so have this for now.

i apologize for the weird formatting maybe )

every god-forsaken thing

uuugh I totally should've written my Skyfall reaction post sooner after I watched it, I had a lot of feelings, now most of the feelings I have left are about how it can be turned into a Dean/Cas AU. I REALLY ENJOYED SKYFALL. I saw a review describe it as "it's to James Bond what The Dark Knight is to Batman" and I concur, and that's probably one of the bigger reasons I love it, a James Bond in a post-Bond world. Also aaaaugh so many Bond&M feelings. I WILL TOTALLY WRITE THIS REACTION POST.

But right now, I'm having reactions to SPN 8x07.

spoilers: IT WAS REALLY GREAT. MORE LIKE THIS PLEASE, SHOW. )

This post starts out relatively coherent, then quickly goes downhill.

Do anyone of you read Fables? I'm near the end of the series and I have Thoughts about it. But first let's talk about TV.

SPN 8x02 )

Also, I wrote 8x02 episode tag. Here it is, all 350ish shippy gen words of it: He prays the way people use the telephone.

i aten't dead

OMG SO. [livejournal.com profile] twasadark recorded Bring Out Your Dead and it's prologue/prequel, The Future as B-Movie as podfics! You can download the files here. Thank you, twasadark!

This is one of those fics that never would've been written were it not for a commentfic prompt, and Uno and I are forever grateful to [livejournal.com profile] maychorian for letting us take her prompt and run with it hard and fast, cackling maniacally. Croatpocalyptic road trip gen h/c, if you're into it. Plus vampires.

+

I haven't watched SPN 7x18 yet, but I have some 7x17-related recs. I'll put them behind a cut for spoilers.

1 fic rec, 2 meta recs, brief thoughts )

I'm also into The Sopranos like a billion years too late. Damn, that shit is bleak, I can't take too much of it at a time. I can't help but wonder if it had had a fandom then like fandoms work now, what it'd be like. I bet there'd be a lot of Christopher apologism hahahaha DX. If the characters were younger and prettier, I bet there'd be slash up the wazoo. I am also watching the Sarah Connor Chronicles and am already dreading running out of episodes, MAN. It keeps giving me things I never knew I needed. why did they cancel this show.

But another thing about The Sopranos: they keep playing all the classic rock songs that SPN used in Tony's strip club. I get cognitive dissonance. Brother feelings? DENIED. JERSEY MOBSTER SKEEVINESS WHILE TOPLESS WOMEN GYRATE IN THE BACKGROUND.

+

Also I am co-writing a Big Bang with [livejournal.com profile] zempasuchil. It's an S4 AU where Cas's vessel is Sam, and it's not gen.

I'm 83 pages into Carlos Ruiz Zafon's "The Angel's Game" and I'm really loving his style, or at least the translation. The blurb had me at "dark gothic Barcelona", "pulp fiction writer", and something called "the Cemetery of Forgotten Books". It sounds foreboding and it gets pretty grim, but I am also delighted at the author's self-deprecating humor. Here's a short quote:
Don Basilio was a forbidding-looking man with a bushy mustache who did not suffer fools and who subscribed to the theory that the liberal use of adverbs and adjectives was the mark of a pervert or someone with a vitamin deficiency. Any journalist prone to florid prose would be sent off to write funeral notices for three weeks. If, after this penance, the culprit relapsed, Don Basilio would ship him off permanently to the 'House and Home' pages. We were all terrified of him, and he knew it.

"Did you call me, Don Basilio?" I ventured timidly.

I just finished the Sanctuary episode where Will (or Hank?) refers to the Sanctuary team as a dysfunctional family. HAHAHA. AHAHAHAHAHA. AHAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA. That's cute, Hank (or Will). Real cute! SO CUTE. Oh Sanctuary team, we'll talk about familial dysfunction when one of you destroys timelines, tries to overthrow a kingdom, starts civil wars, and/or sells your soul to a demon because a family member is dead. I'M AFRAID YOU ARE SPARKLY AND FULL OF RAINBOWS, AND YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO DEAL WITH THAT.

once upon a time in manila

You know that feeling you get when you are supposed to go to the beach but then you get sick and you can't go? It's a shitty fucking feeling. I HAVE THAT FEELING RIGHT NOW. A CANYON OF SADNESS FOR ME.

So instead, you're getting my thoughts on 'Once Upon a Time' because oh my god. So it's like live-action traditional fairy tale fanfic, right. It's almost like an [livejournal.com profile] isurrendered meme come to life. The more I was babbling about it to [personal profile] animus_wyrmis, the more I realized that the story is doing in its actual canon what I strove to do with, say, Susan Pevensie and the Novaks. Why should you settle for being a character in someone else's story? General spoilers. )

Also, me and my weakness for gangster movies are kind of super really excited for 'Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story'. Asiong Salonga was the boss gangster in Manila in the 1940s/50s. There's been at least three movies based on his life already, so... here is number four, I guess? IT'S RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS THOUGH SO OKAY.

HIGH-SPEED CALESA CHASE/GUNFIGHT SEQUENCE AHAHA GIVE IT TO ME. Also here is a music video of one of the soundtrack songs already. The title translates to 'King of Tondo', Tondo being one of the poorest and most underdeveloped districts of the city. The music video functions as an extended trailer basically: "Hari ng Tondo" by Gloc 9 feat. Denise Barbacena

ALSO IT IS TIME FOR:

Perfect for those with small attention spans! SPAM IT WITH PROMPTS. STUFF IT WITH FILLS.

I have Sanctuary feels. )

Poem rec! Confessions: My Father, Hummingbirds, and Franz Fanon by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. It's about identity, representation, and the sentimental attachment to the flaws you've been told are inherent. It gets me like right here.

Speaking of poems, I wish I can remember the title and author of this one book of poetry I found in the New York Public Library last year. All I can remember of it is that it had a green cover of blurry trees (and maybe a boy?) and it had a bunch of long poems about the poet's distant father HAHAHAHAHA THIS SOUNDS LIKE A PARODY ALREADY but seriously. I was really digging it and was sad I didn't get to finish. It was at a very innocuous-looking NYPL branch close to the main branch, like a block away, and if you take the the escalator to the 2nd(?) floor, it would be in the bottom-left corner of the room. WORST CLUES EVER. RANDOM BOOK OF AWESOME POEMS, I WILL NEVER FIND YOU AGAIN basically, just like I will never again find that song whose chorus goes "hey, heeeeyyyy" or was it "mmm, mmmmmmm" and it sort of sounded like The XX. This paragraph is the most hipster thing I've ever written.

i title this list "shh, just come"

1. What is an erasure? This is an erasure, pretty much. The multifandom [livejournal.com profile] erasureathon fest is open for sign-ups for one more week! Sign up here.

2. Pan-Fandom Tinyships Commentfest, for the extra rare ships, because a commentmeme containing an Alan Grant/Ian Malcolm prompt is OKAY BY ME. <3

3. SPN Femslash Week 2011 has begun! There's nothing on [livejournal.com profile] spnfemslashweek yet, but the tumblr equivalent is reblogging some really lovely stuff.

4. I'm a few eps into the Jensen season of Smallville, which I am watching mostly in a vacuum and armed only with fannish osmosis. )

5. Helen Magnus is probably a Time Lord and other deep thoughts about season 1 of Sanctuary, and also Kate Freelander. Nothing very spoilery. )

lass watches too much television

1. There was an article about how bromance movies tend to celebrate how some boys just don't grow up aww how ~presh, but that the same sentiment doesn't really extend to women. I didn't really notice this or feel its absence until Parks & Recreation's Leslie Knope gave it to me. There are some behaviors that I think society has labeled as juvenile and therefore a "phase" in girls, but Leslie embodies these behaviors AND YET the narrative doesn't punish/degrade her for it. SHOCKING?! They are presented as just another facet of a whole, happy, successful human being, and seeing this is poignantly affirming. YOU'RE OKAY, GIRLS. YOU'RE JUST FINE. You don't have to overcome yourself to ~become yourself! And I am like :'DDDD. There are all kinds of standards about what makes a woman a functional adult, and Leslie Knope dismantles the bullshit by... existing. Okay, existing fictionally, BUT STILL. BLESS YOU, AMY POEHLER.

2. I found a Hawaii 5-0 confessions blog, and it is both hilarious and disheartening how all fandoms are the same. "I miss how chummy fandom used to be." "I hate this new character, they should get rid of her." "I miss the bromance between the two white male leads." It is ONLY THE SECOND SEASON LOOOOOOOOOLOLOLOLOL. Oh, H50 fandom, hang on to your hats.

3. Does anyone here watch Sanctuary? I just finished watching the pilot and have the rest of S1-3 lined up on the torrent queue. I'm very intrigued by Dr. Magnus's character because she seems to be very much the valorized scientist of the type you find in genre stories - compassionate but paternalistic towards the Other. I wonder if this is something the show will address. (DON'T SPOIL ME THOUGH.) I'm also intrigued by Druitt because Christopher Heyerdahl is fucking ace, goddamn. This quote by him about his character that made me go, "FINE FINE OKAY I WILL WATCH SANCTUARY, ARE YOU HAPPY NOW??"

4. I know there are at least 2 Sons of Anarchy fans on my flist, but there are MORE OF YOU, RIGHT? I already babbled a little bit about how awesome the Gemma&Jax relationship is, but this post's bit of SoA love is for the Gemma&Tara friendship and how organically it developed from ENEMIES!! to mentor/mentee BFFs. Like, blink and you miss it. MASTERFULLY DONE. Anyway, what is the deal with the DA, guys? He is super weird.

5. I had the BEST DREAM last night. I call it the banana chocolate waffle burrito. So, you take a waffle, right? You pile it on with bananas, chocolate, IDK, cream and stuff. Caramel, whatever. Strawberries! ANYWAY. You put all this stuff on the waffle, then you roll it up, like a burrito, then you put it in your mouth. WAFFLE BURRITOS. I will patent this and start a franchise.

it's never too late for 6x20 photoshop therapy

1. Sign-ups for [livejournal.com profile] erasureathon are open! The profile page has a good explanation of what erasure poetry is. Last round, I erased [personal profile] be_themoon's Narnia zombiepocalypse fic into this thing that isn't even really fannish anymore, which is part of the fun - the erasure doesn't have to be about what the original fic was about. [livejournal.com profile] gallifreycalls went above and beyond and not only erased but turned my Merlin remix into art, holy wow. Erasures are fun, COME JOIN THE PARTY.

2. You know what's even more fun than writing things? Enabling other people to write things for you. [livejournal.com profile] jimmybigbang (or rather, Novak Big Bang) has a plot bunny playground and WIP adoption center. Similarly, [livejournal.com profile] dc_dystopia (or rather, Dean/Cas darkfic in general) has both a prompting post and a plot bunny grooming post.

3. In TV news, I keep meaning to make posts about Parks & Recreation and The Good Wife, but it keeps boiling down to "my favorite part was all of the parts". The Leslie/Ann friendship on P&R, man. It resonates with me in exacting and genuine ways. I recognize it. Actually I think what I appreciate the most about both these shows is the characters' diversity of successes and how unexpectedly empowering that is. Success and confidence look like a lot of things, but TV shows are rarely the place I go to be reminded of that. But suddenly Leslie Knope!

4. Sons of Anarchy is not a show I'd recommend to everyone, but I'm enjoying the crap out of it and can I get a WOOOOOOOO for Gemma, who is perfect? I really appreciate the Gemma/Jax relationship here because you don't get that many good mother/son relationships on TV. You usually get a crapload of father/son and mother/daughter - and some father/daughter - but I feel like mother/son gets the worst rap and is the most maligned. Gemma and Jax are strong characters who love and respect each other very much, and it's really heartening to see. I also have a bunch of capslock regarding the evolution of Gemma and Tara's friendship, but that is for another time. Unrelatedly: this show is like a Deadwood cast party or something.

5. Updated the masterlist with 8 new SPN fics, all of which are at different points of the Dean/Castiel shippiness spectrum, ranging from "gen fics inspired by shippy prompts" to "post-apocalyptic blowjobs". So yeah.

6. OMFG YES YESSSSSSSSS

In other news, I wish this WW2 AU would shut its face already. I don't even know how to spell 'lieutenant' before I spell-checked this sentence, so why do I have this rambling outline threatening to turn into actual fic? Ugh, [livejournal.com profile] weatheredlaw, this is all your fault. You and your WW2 AU Wincest graphic, DAMN YOU.
