I'm not sure what this next thing is. It's gen and kinda weird, approximately 400 words. I think it's trying to be a 6x22 episode coda, but mostly it's my theology angst trying to co-opt Dean and Castiel for its own nefarious purposes.

RECCED WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE

Supernatural/American Gods crossover. Author says it's NC17, I say R. Gen, but it's got some decidedly unsexy sexytimes. Set sometime before 5x16.
Castiel looks for God, and finds Gods.
OMG. It's like Angels We Have Heard with MOAR PANTHEONS and an extra 30,000 words. Did you know stories about Castiel's God search are my FAVORITE? This is what I wish 'Hammer of the Gods' tried harder to be. I have hearts in my eyes. Raindrops on roses, guys. MOTHERFUCKING WHISKERS ON SOME GODDAMN KITTENS.
...aaaaand somewhere along the way, this rec turned into a teal deer on immigrant identities and narratives.
( We cling to adjectives and modifiers. The more words that it takes to describe you, the farther away you are from home. )

the revolution will not be prophesied
Jun. 5th, 2010 05:47 amIs anyone watching Happy Town at all? Because it is kind of AWESOME, and I should make a proper pimping post. But not today. Happy Town kind of reminds me of the "My Ainsel" section of American Gods, except told through the townspeople's perspective. It's set in a Great Lake state, AND there is a creepy bird, AND spring thaw festival shenanigans, AND there are even those magic tricks metaphor of which Gaiman was so fond. Availz on Hulu.
A small town in Minnesota is not as happy as the show title would have you believe. What's with these vanished people? What's with that new girl who just moved into town, and what does she REALLY want? The characters are excellent, with lots of familiar faces. Uriel (SPN), for one, playing Uriel. Ruth Fisher (Six Feet Under) playing the Machiavellian town mayor. Cardinal Woolsey (The Tudors) playing a dashing old man with a lot of skeletons in his closet. He owns a store selling a movie memorabilia and it's called--wait for it--THE HOUSE OF USHERS <33333. And don't get me started on Henley's reined-in chutzpah, or TC the reluctant sheriff, or the merry widows <333, or the Stiviletto brothers. THIS COULD'VE BEEN MY NEW SHOW. WHY SO PREMATURELY CANCELING, ABC? Do we have a movement to save it yet?
( Hey, I'm posting SPN 5.22 thoughts, after all. )

zempasuchil for betareading.

Feb. 24th, 2010 08:02 amNow showing on my Dreamwidth, through the fault of one
cherryshadowz: Consider the Jellyfish - Supernatural/Spongebob Squarepants - Sam, Spongebob - rated G, omg - Spongebob knows what will cheer Sam up. 118 words.
And now for something completely different, because sometimes when you are up to your ears in multivariate regression analysis, you relax by writing theological language porn, idk. We continue to ask, "What if Castiel were words?" The first wordsverse fic is untitled. This next one is a Dean POV, PG I guess, 500ish words. Will there be a third installment? I dunno, it'll depend on how pretentious I'm feeling.
So I'm wondering, if Castiel can be words, what else can he be? What if Castiel were ice cream flavors? What if he were footwear. Would he be toe socks? What if Castiel were currencies pegged to the dollar? The possibilities are endless!
More important questions:
1) Why are there not more stop-motion t-shirt battles?
2) When will Bradley James and Misha Collins team up to fight zombies in space?
3) Clueless + SPN = <3 Y/Y?
unnamed
Dean & Castiel

things Sgrio makes me do
Feb. 17th, 2010 10:02 pmIT'S ALMOST REMIX REDUX TIME, GUYS. SO EXCITED. Click here to vote for this year's qualifying fandoms. Click here or here to get an AO3 invitation because that's where it's going down this year. Reeeeemiiiiix! \o/
This next thing is the fault of
sgrio and her Biblical Studies homework.
Basically it poses the interpretation that angels are not messengers, but messages. Obedience to God is a moot point, because an email or a letter can't be obedient to you. They don't have the faculties to BE obedient, they just ARE. My knee-jerk reaction is of course to ask, "What if Castiel was just a message?" So I wrote ( this ) and then I wrote this next thing.
I'm not sure what this next thing is. It's Castiel meta, but also maybe sort of a fic, maybe. It is... an experiment? 'Cos someone, SGRIO, was like, "Hey, why don't you fap about religion and language in context of Supernatural?" and I can't say no to that. What is it with you, SPN, making me write 1st person POV, past tense, and now whatever this is idek. I kind of wanted to reference more episodes, but 500 words of this is probably more than enough for now.
So yeah, what if Castiel were words? Spoilers through 4x22, and maybe 5x02. Happy start of Lent, folks. ETA: And now there is a sequel -- unnamed.
untitled
Castiel, Dean, & God
( from the Latin caedere meaning 'to cut' )

This is not the research I am looking for.
I was trawling through a Hetalia ficcer's LJ for Inglourious Basterds fic (as one does) and in one post she was like, "Guys, check out this Sacred-Texts.com! It's got books of blahblahblah and blahblahblah and also Enochian magic, so I am swooning geekily right now," and I'm like hey? 'Cos geeky swoons over Enochian stuff are up-and-coming in my world right now.
Through the magic of internet, I have turned a quest for WW2 AU slash into a trip through Angelology 101.
( Consider yourself warned for gleeful appropriation and too much Wikipedia. )

i'm not even going to pretend this time
Oct. 19th, 2009 07:58 pmMan, if you thought 'Sea Change' and the Revolutionsverse was bad, heads up. This is probably the most pretentious (...and academic discipline- and litigation-inviting) thing I've done to date.
I co-wrote Narnia fic with Emile Durkheim. It's England fic, of which approx 50% is copy-pasted from Durkheim's Elementary Forms of Religious Life. The translation I have is the Joseph Swain one, and it's beautifully written and it reminds me of Narnia ALL THE DAMN TIME. My notes in the margins largely consist of things like "OMG SUSAN" and "the constitutive elements of Aslan" and just, I dunno. Sometimes the book feels like a collection of excerpts from fic. Durkheim totally could've written some bombass Narnia fic if he wanted to. So I made him!
For Z, who loves me anyway.
(I, uh. I should flock this, shouldn't I.)
Forms & Foundations
Narnia. Susan, Edmund. G. Co-written with Emile Durkheim, posthumously.
"This world tells her, You are Susan Pevensie, a whole equal to the sum of her parts, and she wonders what that entails."
( The idealization of a world is merely changing the terms of the problem; it is not resolving it or even advancing it. )

The prof is extending this unit until next week, which is great because there are no new readings, leaving me more time to send out resumes and freak out about my thesis data sets. The FAO can suck it, but the Philippines' Bureau of Agricultural Statistics is a friendly fellow, he can stick around.
Okay, what, Ideologies/Mythologies. Unit 2: Ideology & the Political-Theological ( and how they make awesome fic prompts )
( and then I change the subject to Leverage! mostly about the Two Live Crew Job ep )
