I just watched Driving Lessons starring Ron and Molly Weasley Rupert Grint and Julie Walters and omg <3333. SO FUCKING ADORABLE. And the soundtrack dropped Sufjan Stevens all over the place!, which was also <333 but sometimes discombobulatingly D: because the songs have been chopped for movie scoring and I was like WTF WHERE IS THE REST OF IT. Especially when it played "all the trees of the field will clap their hands" because I fucking love that song. (I KNOW, his titles omfg. My favorite Sufjan title is "They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From the Dead!! Ahhhh!")

It's about Ben's (Grint) coming of age, sure, but it is also about Evie's (Walters) coming of age. They both come to grips with growing older, and the vulnerable position this puts them in contributes to how dependent they become on each other. You know, a bit of "you're the only one who understands me" mixed in with "you are so infuriating that I cannot be without you". One of my favorite scenes is their acting out Shakespeare in her backyard, closely followed by Evie swallowing the car key. It is saved from bathos by cute cheeky lines like spoiler ) and "You should've told me. I would've understood -- I'm a poet." and also EUCALYPTUSTREE!RUPERT <333.

Rupert Grint's hair is so shiny and silky-looking. I wanna run my fingers through it all day. Rupert Grint! His facial expressions were still "duuuuhhhhh what do i do??" a lot of the time but it felt more justified in this movie, what with his "I am SO VERY AWKWARD" thing that he's got going on. The scene where Briony flirts with him was made of facepalms and headdesks, though; the tongue-tied thing felt overwrought. Snap out of it, Weasley! Still, Grint made a more compelling Ben than he did a Ron Weasley.

People are making a lot of comparisons to Harold & Maude. That's fair, there are a lot of similarities. I think stories need to be retold and reinterpreted though, to make sure the messages aren't lost. "One must change to stay the same," and all that.

I am halfway through Orphans of Chaos by John C. Wright. The quantum physics psychobabble makes my eyes glaze over, but other than that I'm having an all right time. I already want Colin/Victor. More on chaotic orphans later, maybe.
