+ OH MY HOLY FUCK: [community profile] steampunk_nusantara -- a communal worldbuilding thingie for a STEAMPUNK SOUTHEAST ASIA. It kind of reminds me of a play-it-by-ear Museum at Purgatory. We inventory made-up artifacts! Fictional non-fiction! EXCUSE ME WHILE I HAVE THE VAPORS.

STEAMPUNK. SOUTHEAST. ASIA. My first contribution is a positive review of a questionable book. My first thought was actually, "Steampunk jeepneys would be so badass." Jeepneys* are already pretty trippy to begin with. Xzibit can learn a thing or two from them about pimping one's ride. And jeepneys all steampunked up? LIFE, PLEASE PROVIDE.

* Jeepneys are what happens when the American jeeps left in the Philippines after WW2 are pimped out for public transportation. Which begs the question: steampunk WW2?? GIMME. Keysmash capslock forever! \o/

+ In sorta related news, here's an experiment. Said experiment is me writing interrelated drabbles in French and Bahasa Indonesia. I'm not super comfortable in either language, but writing anything in them has been something I've wanted to do for a while, just to see if I can, to maybe ease into it. If you speak either of these languages, please feel free to correct my grammar and phrasing and stuff! I would love to improve. (Fic: making me engage in things I would otherwise never get around to.)

So I guess the drabbles could be missing scenes from Bring Out Your Dead, or something. Or otherwise, just 219 words about two guys road trippin' through the End of Days. I'm not quite sure what to think of the fact that I seem to be more comfortable writing in French than I am in Indonesian. I'm that estranged from my mothertongue, it seems.

I started catching up on Lost and I might have to picspam the shit out of 'Some Like It Hoth' because everything Miles Straume does is like rainbows in my heart. Miiiiiiles.

In other news, here is a fic. It's the first time I've written anything akin to a whodunnit plot. There is actually something for the characters to do besides get over some feelings! Though there is some of that too. So here we go, I guess!

The title turns out to be from "Will You Smile Again" by Trail of Dead, after all.

So hey! Could I possibly trouble anyone to betaread a Supernatural fic that looks like this: ETA: The positions have been filled!

Title: If Heaven Sent You Downstream // Against Such Mighty Dreams
Characters: Dean/Castiel, Sam
Rating: PG13
A/N: I started this because I wanted to write a Filipino folk tale into SPN, but then 5x04 reared its dystopian head and I had to go there too. It takes place after Castiel spirits Dean away from the motel, and before Dean meets up with Sam. The title is from [either Trail of Dead's "Will You Smile Again" or Duncan Sheik's "Orpheus", depending].
Summary: Half casefic and half 5x04 episode tag in which Dean 1) investigates some disappearances in the mountains, and 2) finds it difficult to leave the future behind.

It's got doppelgangers! It's got mindfuckery! It's got fight scenes! It's 11,000 words. It's got kissing!

There are a lot of cool Filipino monsters to choose from, depending on what kind of neurosis I'd want the story to explore. I'm happy with the folk tale I chose, but man, check out the sigbin, which walks backwards with its head lowered between its hind legs and kills little children during Holy Week for their hearts, which it uses to make amulets. As nightmare fuel-y as that sounds, it apparently looks like a little kangaroo. D'aww. UNTIL IT DRINKS YOUR BLOOD.

I'm also fascinated by the santelmo, which is a telephone-gaming of St. Elmo's Fire. Sometimes it's just random bursts of fire, but sometimes it's a human-shaped fire creature, and it's traditionally an omen of heavenly intervention. So I mean, what part of that can't be used for SPN Heaven/Hell fic, fo' shiz? I mean, the thing in 1x09 is basically a santelmo, amirite.

While researching my monster, I came across this article called The Balut* in a Superhero's Underpants about the Filipino presence in comics and it fills me with such gleeeee, because: "If the Americans have their 'Easter eggs', we Filipinos have our 'balut eggs'. 'Balut eggs' are those moments when Filipinos (or something Pinoy) suddenly pops up in foreign movies, TV shows, novels and comic books." AHAHAHA AWESOME. Then it lists and illustrates instances of PINOY POWER in comics, and granted it's not always perfect, but you know how in one of [livejournal.com profile] rawles's many posts about Uhura, she was talking about still having "OMG A BLACK GIRL ON TV!" reactions even now? That's how I feel, except times a million, because no one is Southeast Asian on TV. It's like, you got your East Asians, you got your South Asians, but apparently nothing exists between Australia and China?**

* For those not in the know, balut is fertilized duck egg i.e. there is already a fetus in the egg. You cook it and eat it! Personally, I don't think I would ever, ever eat one, but it's pretty popular in the Philippines, it's like street food. For some reason, Filipino-Americans FIXATE on it. Probably 'cos it's so crazy? I feel like every time I see something about about the Philippines made by Fil-Am, there is always ALWAYS Horrifying Balut Interlude time.

** Fo shiz, what is Asia? Why is it that Asian cultural societies in American colleges usually means East Asians, and like, the South Asians usually make their own cultural societies? Why are there no Arab or Uzbek peeps in the Asian cultural societies? ASIA?: the eternal question.

* My post on personal stories got picked up for the 4th Asian Women Blog Carnival \o/, which I'm pretty excited about. It looks like there's some good stuff over there so def check it out. This year's theme is "storytelling, or reclaiming our selves through our words". Unsurprisingly the first thing I read is a poem about Manila and, speaking of land=body, [livejournal.com profile] zempasuchil, remember that Hetalia fic you never wrote that I gave you feedback for? 'When the Waters Rose'? This is kind of like that, but set in the Philippines. "our middle ground exists / where floodwaters rise / to meet sinking shores"

* I'm beginning to wonder if I forgot about something important that happened last season in Heroes, 'cos what the hell is going on. On top of dumb superpowers. Why haven't I dropped this show yet?

* I'm assuming that things like Queen Victoria, Demon Hunter are riding on the coattails of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. I'm not a big Victorian lit fan nor am I a zombie nerd overmuch, but I do like the idea of the two of them fused together. So. Are these books any good?

* I'm not even in Trek fandom, but I just read and liked this fic by [info - personal] bravecows, which is set in a Starfleet Academy in Malaysia, featuring two female OCs who talk about why is it that only Westerners ever get assigned to certain missions and also why the Starfleet computer can't understand their accents. In other reccing ball news, I am also a fan of this Ty Lee/Azula fic and this Arthur/Gwen fic.

* The world needs more Ty Lee/Azula.

* I could make a legit Merlin reaction post but I'm kind of pooped, so have this two-word review instead: GAAAAIIIIUUUUUSSSSSSS! PENNNNNDRAGONNNNNSSSSS!

* [livejournal.com profile] fantasyecho embeds YouTube vids of Western pop songs being played on traditional Malay/Indonesian instruments. *_*

* And, for the hell of it: mash-up recs! ) You guys got mash-up recs to share?

* I'm gonna hunt for dinner and send at least one job application before bed. (man i was so productive last week)

1. In Typhoon Ondoy/Ketsana disaster relief news, [livejournal.com profile] litlover12 is organizing a drive to resupply public schools in the Philippines with classic books hereabouts. If you got any spare change lying around, kids!

2. you are here: the journal of creative geography is accepting submissions! "Geographical imagination is a specific term, but has diverse meanings within geography and related fields. The concept has been used to describe the similarities and differences of individual or collective perceptions of space and place. We encourage submissions that engage this concept along with its limits and possibilities. Submissions should consider the utopian, fantastical, cultural, political, aesthetic, visionary, or other dimensions of this concept. We ask you to invent, define, unravel, or creatively explore imaginary spaces and spatial imaginaries." Submission deadline: January 10, 2010.

3. I saw this on 'Robot Chicken' last night and it totally cracked my shit up: Six Mix-a-lot comes to Camelot to educate some people about optimal table shapes.

4. omg Yuletide sign-ups! Can any of you be enticed to write fic for Jonny Quest, Captain Planet, The Johnny Maxwell Trilogy, or classic Disney cartoons? I hope so! (Think it's okay that I picked Jonny Quest instead of JQTRA? 'Cos I mean the character list still has Jessie on it...)

5. I'm still working on the writing prompts from the stories and identity post, so those are coming soon-ish. I also have to spruce up the knightfic I wrote for the Fleet party two parties ago. In the meantime, in honor of the World Series, here is Unnecessary 'Merlin' AU #748392: Arthur Pendragon is the starting pitcher for the Camelot Knights. Their long-term rivals are the Albion Wizards. Perhaps the World Series are on the horizon? They have a Round Stadium! I'm actually not sure what else it would involve outside of baseball signals and superstition, Knights Nation, and Arthur brooding prettily on the pitcher's mound. It... it could happen?

Did I have more to say than this? Possibly. But too bad!

I reckon I should be organizing my data sets, but then I listened to Chimamanda Adichie talk about the dangers of a single story (via [livejournal.com profile] heather11483 and [livejournal.com profile] deepad) and my heart just swelled. I was originally going to flock this post because it has a lot of personal information in it, but then I realized that would be kind of defeating the point. So, here it is.

thoughts on my own stories: the ones I couldn't own, the ones I didn't want to own, the ones I had to fight for, the ones I still have to fight for )

So in the spirit of this, I'm gonna do new twist on an old meme. I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. And I will answer in autobiographical narrative form.

Damn, son, I gotta start hanging out at the Camelot Fleet more often, especially if they're going to have a take your fandom home with you AU minifest. I totally would have been all over that and I am sadface that I missed it! Merlin in New York has already been expanded upon here, but Worcester and Manila have not yet been broached. Let us rectify that!

Merlin, Will, Gwen, and Morgana in Worcester, Massachusetts )

Arthur, Lancelot, Uther, and Gaius in Manila, Philippines )

I kind of wanna do that meme where, in the zombiepocalypse movie of your life, who would play you and your friends? And I will choose fandom characters instead of actors/actresses. But it's already 3 AM, so maybe another time. To close: THE GREAT GAIUS MEME!!! \o/ <333!

ETA: Oh Christ, I don't need to be tempted by another ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] apocabigbang. But my Merlin/Sandman crossover can count for this, and I already have 3000 words.

Reuters has a news page for the Indonesia earthquake, as well as a listing of relief organizations involved with its relief, including Americares and Save the Children. They also have one for Typhoon Ondoy/Ketsana. Thanks for the heads-up, [livejournal.com profile] mrinalinee! I previously posted donation links for Typhoon Ketsana/Ondoy here.

I started doing this meme forever ago and I'm still getting through it:

Wondermark posted this a few weeks ago: The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello

It's a creepy, steampunkesque, shadow puppets-ish 30-min animation involving a failed navigator, a mad scientist, a terrible plague, strange beasts, and of course, zeppelins.

My favorite morally dubious sketchball finally got a comm of his own, [livejournal.com profile] asthebrowarches, which is perhaps the best Merlin community name to date. Party on, Gaius.

A few days ago, Typhoon Ondoy hit Manila and surrounding areas, and flooded the city over. Worst floods in 40 years, so bad that cars just swirl around in the currents with passengers still inside them, so bad that some places are submerged under 20 feet of water. It was 85 km/h winds, and a month's worth of rain that fell in 6 hours. I mean, we're already pretty rainy to begin with.

My folks are fine but there's already at least 51 people dead, and around 280,000 people displaced. ETA: That's like if every citizen of Barbados or the Maldives got displaced. We can make a new country with the displaced.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1. Help for Typhooon Ondoy Victims in the Philippines - This is a good place to keep up with news, with active situation map and a list of ways you can donate. If you scroll down, there is a list of US-based donation drop-off points, though it's just California, New York, and New Jersey. You can also do credit card and PayPal.

2. Ondoy Places to Donate Relief Goods - This GoogleDocs has a more comprehensive list of how to donate under the 'Online/International' category.

3. SPREAD THE WORD.

ETAs: I guess the rest of the world is calling this one Typhoon Ketsana. What's with that, why do our typhoons get named twice. Here are brief news clips about the state of affairs in Manila from BBC and Al Jazeera. The president continues to be extraordinarily inept, and our own urban planning continues to fail us.
whynot: etc: oh deer (Default)
Words cannot express how much I want (and possibly need) The Manga Guide to Statistics. God, if only I had known about it last semester.

Speaking of comics, I went to my first Comic Con last weekend. I'm not usually a comics convention-going person, but my friend was working the audio equipment, so I went. One of Manila's most awesome bands performed, but unfortunately I only arrived as they were finishing their set. (Okay, so this band -- Gorgoro -- are awesome mainly because of one thing: they have a puppet for a frontman. A puppet who is only trying to find his estranged father, yes he has backstory.) There was also a large "Goodbye, Tita Cory" banner that people were writing farewell messages on. And I got some nice loot! 'Chiaroscuro: The Private Lives of Leonardo da Vinci', 'Trese', 'Skyworld: Apocrypha', aaand )

And I'm not putting Purchase #4 under the cut, because.

4. My faaaaavorite purchase is a 4-part miniseries called Elmer by Gerry Alanguilan, which is an alternate history in which chickens became sentient. That's right, on February 3, 1979 -- or the Great Awakening -- chickens gained human consciousness. I prefer parts 3 and 4 because the allegory becomes less in-your-face, but the whole thing is quite intruiging. The premise is awesome and each part quite short that I couldn't stop. Gaiman-approved!

SENTIENT CHICKENS. CHICKEN MARRIAGE. EXTREMIST CHICKEN RIGHTS GROUPS. Hiding your chicken friends in the basement because otherwise your neighbors would kill them for being abominations! The protagonist gets beat up at school because he wouldn't cluck like his bullies told him to! BIRD FLU. omg.

The first part is available online here.

I admit, at first I wasn't sure whether Elmer is set in the Philippines (it is) because the characters have what I consider to be an American way of talking. Really, I feel I should've figured it out from the plants and architecture, and I shouldn't have been so unhinged by 'Americanisms', 'cos I mean, look at me. I drop U's, use Z's, and do your mom-with-an-O every night. The English in the Philippines is, so to speak, more American. I'm still deconstructing my own dichotomies.

I've been slow in replying to comments, sorry :(. Obviously the solution is to whore for even more comments. Meme me up, Scotty: Top 5 me!

So I drag myself out of bed, skip breakfast, and go to my internship and am like, "Wow, good thing there's no traffic." And I get to my building and am like, "Wow, good thing I'm the only person in the elevator so we don't have to stop at every fucking floor." And I get to my floor and the office is dark and empty and locked.

?!?

I missed the memo, but I should have figured: today is a public holiday today because the Philippines is burying Cory Aquino.

Check it out, here she is:

January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009
Ex-first female president in Asia, advocate of democracy, People Power revolutionary, and all-around awesome lady.

When the Marcos regime assassinated her husband in 1983, her vengeance was to become president. I mean, holy crap. Well, she officially lost to Marcos, but everyone knew that was just electoral fraud anyway. What followed was the People Power revolution (also called EDSA revolution), in which 2 million people took to the EDSA highway in non-violent protest and refused to budge, the culmination of years of repressed opposition. As the protest wore on, more of the military began to defect. Marcos fled the country with his tail between his legs.

President Cory Aquino! \o/

Cory's husband is now worth approximately US$10

Her presidency wasn't perfect, but it did end 20 years of dictatorship and heralded the democratic transformation of a nation. Even after her presidency, she continued to be active in philanthropic work and political empowerment, collecting stacks of human rights honors along the way. 120,000 people showed up to watch her funeral cortege pass. Probably why my side of town was so quiet.

Thanks for your awesome, Cory!

But where there is death, there must be life! I swear I didn't get this from the tabloids: two-headed babies have been born in both my homelands. BOTH. Coincidence?! Indonesian two-headed baby. Filipino two-headed baby. Just. Wow.

In completely unrelated news, the commentfic party seems to be off to a great start. COME PLAY, GUYS. Going strong are an Edmund&Susan Last Battle AU thread, a Gossip Girl goes to Hogwarts thread, and Pokemon goes to Camelot thread. Have I mentioned lately how much I love you guys?

So, to take a break from reccing fics everyone has already recced.

This next piece is inspired by this, a charming drabble about the romantic affairs of anthropomorphous land masses. Mine is about the sort of romantic affairs of anthropomorphous nations. As background, I present to you this woefully abbreviated summary of the Philippines' colonial and cultural history. )

That said, I have a few qualms about posting this relating to political correctness and hypocrisy. History and culture are subjective things, so I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries (says the girl who wrote RPS fic). Uh. I will say that the references aren't to be interpreted too literally. So, test-run on my journal before posting it to [livejournal.com profile] anthropomor_fic, a community to which everyone should contribute more often. Alright, who's ready for what could be construed as nationalist propaganda?!
